All,

I think Im ready to pick up a new rear for my 66. What
Im shooting for is one that I can buy already together
and bolt right into the car. I know engines but know
nothing about rears, and everyone Ive spoken with has
told me it can get messy if you dont know what youre
doing. The car currently has a 10-bolt open rear in it
(Im guessing 3.08 as it was originally a 283 car). The
car has a 327/300HP and a 2-spd powerglide now. I also
want to get a rear the same size (width) as the
existing 10-bolt, as I dont want to push my wheels and
tires out any further. Im hoping for something around
3.73 gears and a posi in the replacement.

Any input or links would be greatly appreciated!

Jim

Bob,if you think you're going to end up with
over $1K in that 10 bolt rear,I would reconsider the idea of rebuilding it. For
that kind of money, you can find a 66-67 12 bolt and build it to suit your
needs.

64 El Camino - I just had my rearend totally rebuilt. Was $1300 and they had it for3 days, new gears. They made sure it worked very well before I got the car back.

They also did my muncie manual 4 speed, totally rebuilt for $1600. They opened the trany 4 times to make it work right. Had it 5 days.

Hope this gives you an idea of what a national transmission shop will charge you.

2005-06-24 Thread J. Brady
That was actually my thought as well, Clint-

Thanks to all who have provided input. I'm not overly
concerned about the car being original, I just wanted
to get a rear the same width as my current 10-bolt so
that I wouldn't push my rims and tires out further.

As long as it's a posi and better than whatever rear
is in it now, I'll be happy 8^] I'd love to just get
a new center section and upgrade it myself, but I've
never done a rear before. I have mechanical skills,
but someone was telling me if you don't get the gears
set right, you can watch your rear and all its
blow up in no time. Don't really need that!!

Re: [Chevelle-list] rear for my 66

2005-06-24 Thread Clint Hooper
If you're planning to leave the 327 alone,I wouldn't change rears as the
stock 10 bolt can easily handle that power level. Just buy a new gearset and
posi unit. You should be able to buy a new ring pinion for around $150 and
a new limited slip unit for less than $400. To install both should run
around $300 or so.

64 El Camino - I just had my rearend totally
rebuilt. Was $1300 and they had it for 3 days, new
gears. They made sure it worked very well before I
  got the car back.

They also did my muncie manual 4 speed, totally
rebuilt for $1600. They opened the trany 4 times
to make it work right. Had it 5 days.

Hope this gives you an idea of what a national

   All,
I think Im ready to pick up a new rear for my 66.
  What
Im shooting for is one that I can buy already
  together
and bolt right into the car. I know engines but
  know
nothing about rears, and everyone Ive spoken with
  has
told me it can get messy if you dont know what
  youre
doing. The car currently has a 10-bolt open rear
  in it
(Im guessing 3.08 as it was originally a 283 car).
  The
   car has a 327/300HP and a 2-spd powerglide now. I
  also
want to get a rear the same size (width) as the
existing 10-bolt, as I dont want to push my wheels
  and
tires out any further. Im hoping for something
  around
3.73 gears and a posi in the replacement.
Any input or links would be greatly appreciated!

Since my transmission shop doesn't do rear end set-up work,I'm not sure what
to tell you. However, the OKC metro area should have a ton of shops that can
do the work. Ever done any business with Parr Automotive on North 10th? Bet
they could give you a recommendation or two.

Still sore and tender,Bob. As for finding a
64-65 10 bolt axle, that might be a little more difficult than finding one for a
66-67 or 68-72.
Have you looked on Team Chevelle's classifieds?
Can you still get onefrom your local parts store?
