GM used the Saginaw 4 speed behind low HP cars. According to my books it didn't show up in the chevelle until 1966. I believe anything rated under 300 HP was standard equipment with it except the z28 302 (rated at 290 HP but really had about 360 HP).

The Saginaw has been around most of our ~classic~ era. I found a
general exploded view of a Saginaw 4-speed for 66-71's. See
http://www.team67.com/groups/index.htm and click the "Group 4.000
Transmission - Brakes" link. I think (not positive) that all Saginaw
4-speeds were iron.

Yeah,I've used the VB&P billet spacers before,Herb,and they are premium
quality. But,I would have to run a 3" to 4" spacer and that is a bunch. Does
anyone know when GM went to Saginaw 4spds and what cars used them? Mine is
cast iron and not aluminum,if that helps. The reason I was thinking of
running a TH400 is because the car will have a big inch Rat (496" or larger)
someday. With that much torque available,I could run a 3.25 rear cog easily.

"B" is for Baltimore and "K" is for Kansas City.

1 = Chevrolet
33 = Std 6-cyl Elky
34 = Std V-8 Elky
35 = Custom 6-cyl Elky
36 = Custom V-8 Elky
80 = 2-dr sedan pickup (Elky)
0-9 = Year
Letter = Assembly plant
Next numbers in VIN are sequential plant numbers

Custom Elkys had better trim and interior - like the difference between
a 300/300 Deluxe and Malibu. Custom got the wood grain tailgate, wood
grain dash strip, better seats, etc. See
http://www.team67.com/1967/gallery/brochures/ec-5.jpg for an Elky

2002-12-01 Thread John Nasta
We both have 136809s. My 7th digit is a B and Clint's is a K. What does the
7th digit (letter) mean? Does that indicate which plant it was made in? I
would assume that the last 6 digits are the plant sequential number. For
that matter, what do the 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the third digit mean? I looked
into all of this on my Oldsmobiles but am still not familiar with all the
ins & outs of the VIN & body tag on my El Camino yet. Mine originally cane
w/ a 350, but I honestly don't know if it was a standard or custom, and what
the differences are between the two. That info would be helpful.

Thanks,
John Nasta

You really need the 6th number in the VIN. That's the one that
indicates the model year. The first five would be 13380, 13480, 13580
or 13680 depending on a standard or custom Elky and 6-Cyl or V-8.

Just curious. I know it's not meant to be original. Doesn't the term "Heavy

2002-12-01 Thread John Nasta
Thanks. That's what I thought. 69-72s have reflectors in the bumper where
the 68 backup lights are, but it is the same bumper. The 69-72 tailgate is a
different p/n from the 68 because of the backup lights (or absence thereof
respectively).

Are you sure they were shaved? Maybe the entire quarter panels were
replaced. The replacement panels do not come w/ the marker light holes cut
out.

Note that the original panel has the hole in:

http://johnnasta.com/elcamino/pages/MVC-633S.htm

and the replacement panel does not in:

http://johnnasta.com/elcamino/pages/MVC-637S.htm

In my case, the hole will be cut in the new panel to match the original.

The side marker lights were shaved when the car was painted. It does have a
