Have you checked for the simpler stuff first? Vacuum leak maybe? worn PCV
valve?

The Chevelle is running poorly, idling low, dying. That's why they said
replace carb.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Holley carburetor Question

2002-06-09 Thread Capt Crunch
I also agree that a 750 carb will work best. A 650 Holley will also work well with some tuning for a BBC with lower compression, weaker heads, and doesn't see much higher rpm's then 4000 or so. Definetly look for vacuum secondaries for a street car as well.   I do have to chuckle a bit. Some people hate Holley's because they have no clue what they are doing on them. There are quite a few good books on Holley's. They aren't that complicated, although they are a more sanative tuning wise and on the older Holley's, tuning them can be a pain, but for true performance Holley, BG, or Demon seem to be the ticket.   Edelbrocks are a great carb for someone not looking for super performance numbers, but wants a very easy carb to tune and one that does not need many additional adjustments IMO. I haven't had much luck tuning them for killer performance at all though, especially with higher compression and anything more then a mild to medium cam.   What about the good old quad? Lots of guys put these down, but much like the Holleys, folks don't take the time to learn about them. They are very cheap and will nail you probably the best gas milage and drivability of any of the choices (although the Edel/Carter AFB's are close). I personally love them for a street car. The 780 cfm models work awsome for street BBC's. They can typically be found in need of a rebuild for under $50 and sometime they are thought to be just a plain-jane quad. I got my last one at a swap meet for $5!    Mikey - Original Message - From: Keith Cooper Sent: Sunday, June 09, 2002 5:02 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Holley carburetor Question  I agree. A carb can be changed easily. I also agree that you mostly likelywanted a 750 carb. A 450 would be small for a 396. A 750 could be also bigif this is a stock motor. Myself, I do not like Holley. They are moretrouble than it is worth. I would look at a Edelbrock. Edelebrock has500,600,750 that run great.Keith

450? Or did you miss the 7 on the keypad? ;^)

What's wrong with the existing carb that it requires a rebuild?

>How important is it to keep it stock? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

The nice thing about carbs is that most of the time the swap can be
easily reversed in the future if necessary. Save the original line
from the pump to the carb along with the carb and any other related
pieces. If a stock appearance is needed in the future you'll have all
the stuff needed to do it.
