read the second email i sent immediatley after that. By no means would I ever
consider a something to be a safety measure in that manner. That was a response to a
personal email to a friend of mine and should not have been sent to the list. I plan
on going back into my AOL address book and removing all of the addresses so this
doesn't happen again. I still don't know how it happened.

  Good
point about never working under the car alone. Although if the car does fall
on you, having somebody else there to watch is not necessarily going to save
  your life.

  Also,
the cheapo jack stands have a triangular base and are made of bent sheet
metal. Those things are an accident waiting to happen. Good jack stands have a
rectangular base and are made of cast
iron.

  I had
my El Camino on 4 (good quality) jack stands for two years and there was no
problem to have it sitting there. I didn’t work under it though w/o putting a
good hydraulic floor jack near where I was working as a failsafe. There's no

One more thought. If you do get a good set of ramps w/
removable inclines, it is a good idea to put the incline panels on the drivers'
seat after removing them. That way you'll never sit down and attempt to back
the car off the stands w/o the incline panels in place. It's a good way to
remind yourself that they have to be put back before you move the car.

  An
object falls when its center of gravity exceeds its base. The problem with
jack stands is that they have a very small base, and by raising the car onto 4
jack stands, you are raising the center of gravity AND putting it on a smaller
base at the same time. Also, jack stands will sink into things like asphalt,
causing the weight to shift. You can get away with it if it is a level cement
surface. My El Camino was on 4 jack stands for 2 years. During that time, I
never got under it. It was really only on stands because the tires did not
hold air and I didn't want the aluminum rims to be supporting the car for that
long. Putting the front on a good set of ramps and the back on stands is MUCH
safer. When I was a teenager, a guy a couple of blocks away was killed because
he was under his car while it was on 4 jack stands. Sure, you might be able to
get away with it, but the price you pay if it doesn't work out is way too
high. I would recommend that you get a good set of heavy-duty ramps with
removable inclines, and one set of jack
  stands.

We have had our 67 Nova up on 4 stands for about 3 yearsWe use heavy duty jack stands, that the base are wider than a average stand. Never had any problems. When I work on mine, and need to have it all in the air, since 4 stands are under the nova, I still have 2 more, So i put those under the rear axle, and then put ramps under the front tires...i usually put one facing front, and one facing back, so it hopefully wont roll away if something did happen.

p.s. even if you use ramps in front and jack stands in the
back, it is still a good idea to have a good floor jack under the rear
differential as well. The life you save may be your own.

I always have my cars up on 4 jackstands, whether its the 70 SS, the 69 Malibu, or my daily driver 86 Cutlass.  In fact, my 69 is up on 4 stands right now.  How else are ya suppose to put in a transmission if you don't have a lift or access to one.  When I do this, I always put the front end up first.  I center the jackstands under the lower control arms so that the bottom of the shock rest in the cradle of the jack stand.  When I jack up the rear, I put the jackstands under the frame where the lower trailing arm mounts are since all of my cars have sway bars on them and I cannot let the sway bar sit onthe jack stand.  It also allows the rear suspension to relax and gives me a little more room to clean it up for a show or something.
