If you just need a place to let the engine sit for a while, you can make a
stand out of 2x4s. You won't be able to get at the oil pan, but that's about
the only thing you won't be able to get at.

Howdy,

Anyone here in Southern California have a spare engine stand I could use
for a bit? How about a cherry picker? I need to pull the motor out of
my Corvette so I can do a swap (and get some parts of the old block). I
can always bite the bullet and buy a stand and rent the crane, but I
figure I may as well ask before I do any of that.

John,
Do you have pictures or a drawing of your 2 by 4 engine stand.

I didn't take any pictures, but my friend Rick who helped me build the motor
still has the stand. We had a real stand that we built the motor on, which
allowed us to rotate the motor and all, but that belongs to Rick's boss and
we couldn't remove it from the shop, So, we also made the wooden stand just
for sitting the motor on while it sat on Rick's trailer on the way to my
brother's house. Then we picked up the motor w/ a cherry picker, set the
wooden stand on my brother's driveway, and put the motor back on it while we
got things ready.

The stand was just a rectangular 2x4 frame with pairs of 2x4s nailed
together at right angles on top of that to create rails that the engine
could sit on. Like I said, once the engine was on this thing, we had no
access to the oil pan, but otherwise it was fine.

Next time I go out to Long Island I'll see if I can take a few pictures of
it.

I also just got some new pix of the El Camino today from Ron Miller at the
body shop. He hasn't done much to it so far other than take the front rear
glass out and start working on the rust in the channels. I will add them to
my El Camino web site though asap. I am going out there on Saturday to see
the car as well, and will take more pix.

Also, for the person who asked the vinyl roof question, my El Camino had a
vinyl roof and somebody took it off, and sanded primed where it was. I am
not putting the vinyl roof back. It's a bear though to sand off all the glue
that normally holds the vinyl top in place.
