If you just need a place to let the engine sit for a while, you can make a
stand out of 2x4s. You won't be able to get at the oil pan, but that's about
the only thing you won't be able to get at.

Anyone here in Southern California have a spare engine stand I could use
for a bit?  How about a cherry picker?  I need to pull the motor out of
my Corvette so I can do a swap (and get some parts of the old block).  I
can always bite the bullet and buy a stand and rent the crane, but I
figure I may as well ask before I do any of that.
