I did my 12-bolt the same way -- bought a complete rearend that wasn't posi, and added my new gears and posi carrier. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Sherwin Wang Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2002 11:35 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] rear questions hi, in response to your questions: 1) no, not all 12-bolts are posi. posi was optional. 2) 12-bolts are rebuildable. you can obtain a 12-bolt without posi and convert it to posi. 3) if you have a small block, 10-bolt should be ok. if you have a big block, 12-bolt is recommended. used 12-bolt is your best bet, but they're rare (low supply, high demand). 4) some rear ends are same and some are slightly different (ie, trailing arms). don't know which ones are compatible. anybody please correct me if i'm mistaken... i just bought a used 12-bolt non-posi for my '69 ss (dropping in a 454 instead of 396) for $100 (a steal). i'm now searching for the posi unit to rebuild. good luck! sherwin -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2002 8:19 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-List] rear questions Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List hey out there! i have a question, is it worth it to convert my 10 bolt into a posi unit, then eventually buy new ring/pinion, or should i just search for a used 12 bolt or ?? are all 12 bolts posi?? are the 12 bolt posi rebuildable?? which would be the cheaper/stronger venture?? are buicks, olds, pontiac a-body rears all the same (bolt into the car) - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List IIRC you have a '72, right? I can't remember for sure, but is this the 8.2" 10-bolt? If you have an 8.5" 10-bolt it can be built to be pretty rugged but I'm not sure about the 8.2". Depends on what you're planning on doing with the car. Remember, GM usually put the 10-bolt behind lower horsepower cars (<300) and 12-bolts behind higher horsepower cars. > are all 12 bolts posi?? No > are the 12 bolt posi rebuildable?? Sure > which would be the cheaper/stronger venture?? Contradiction in terms :*) The 12-bolt is going to be stronger and, depending on where you find one will determine cost. > are buicks, olds, pontiac a-body rears all the same (bolt into the car) Not even all Chevelle rears are the same - see http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/information/axlecodes.htm. Not certain, but I would guess they would be the same respective to their years since they shared a common chassis design.
