Re: [Chevelle-list] PARTS LIST

2007-03-27 Thread Dale
Most of these parts books CDs are dated either 1972 or around 1985
regardless of the year you buy them for - particularly the Detroit Iron
ones. I have ones for 67 and 69 and both have the same parts book scanned
and cover years 64 through 72.

Problem with any GM parts book is numbers change, get merged, get deleted,
get superseded, etc. that chances of finding the #'s you have are 50/50 at
best. Having the parts with the group and part number though is a bonus and
would make it easier to find.

I hate to burst you bubble, but it just does not
work that way. Unless someone on the list can help the
rear housing, when it was manufactured was put on
machines to center the alignments where the shafts go
into the differental. You don't just buy of get a set
of caps because they may have more or less material
removed and expect hem to match the saddles. Do you
have the same 12 bolt I bought and got a lesson on how

Gents on the list, can this be fixed and why do we

If you did find a set of caps, couldn't you plastigage them like main caps

replacement caps, couldn't you?

Just a thought.

I think I remember from my drag racing days that Mark Williams probably
some others had a steel replacement cap for 12 bolts that made the rear
stronger. I don't think that you had to do any machining to use these
caps. If you aren't using it for a racing application, I would think that
you could pull some caps off of another housing use them without any
problem. The front of the bearings are going to seat in the front caps, so
any alignment would be done at that point. The rear caps are there to hold
the bearing in place, and as long as they will tighten down the bearing
race, that should work fine. Just my 2 cents.

I was always told that it couldn't be done without machine work. According

12
Bolt Steel Replacement Main Cap (ea)

One of the
most common causes of rear end component failure can be traced to the
stock rear end caps. To cure this problem MW makes a replacement cap from
billet steel with an increased cross section and heat treated hardware. A
12 Bolt typically only needs the drivers side cap replaced. Requires
  simple milling operation.

Two things I would try to avoid,Ryan; used ring
pinions and ring gear spacers. You can buy new, correct gearsets for around
$125-150.
Used RP's tend to howl if they are re-used on
a different carrier. Hard tofind the established gear pattern it had
before.
Hate to be a wet blanket but I've been there and
done that,,unfortunately more than once.
Good luck in whichever way you choose to

 - stock front a-arms with polygraphite bushings and newer ball joints.

 (Very low miles)
 - driveshaft w/ yoke for TH350
 - stock trans crossmember
 - steering box
 - 10 bolt open carrier
 - 396 Oval Port Heads with casting number 3872702
 - Quadrajet intake manifold (not sure the casting)
 - Spread bore Holley (rebuilt a couple years back)
 - Mallory Unilite distributor
 - HEI distributor
 - column shift tilt steering column
 - floor shift non-tilt steering column
 - Muncie 4 speed (think it's an M-20)
 - 4 15x8 2 15x7 Corvette rallys
 - front inner fenders (metal)
 - radiator
 - barely used car cover
 - freshly powder coated big block pulleys
and probably other stuff I'm not thinking of.

Any of you guys see something you need let me know. I'm moving next
month, so make an offer. Some things I'll just give away for the cost
of
shipping. I just don't want to throw some of this in the garbage.

see Clint already asked. The other thing is that I

I am kind of vague when asking for parts because I am pretty much replacing

the guys on the list made available I agree 100%. The purpose of this list

the control arms came out of a 69. They are
not boxed just standard control arms. I was hoping to find someone that
had some rear end parts or possibly a sway bar so we could work out some sort of
trade. If not I really dont know what they are worth? I also have a
set of front and rear used coil springs, front sway bar (7/8"). What do
you think they are worth?

Thanks for answering back Ryan. I
was possibly looking for 70 control arms to replace my current ones, I dont
know if they would be the same or usable. When I rebuilt the front end
and put in new springs I had a machine shop press in the new bushings and they
bent the arms. I had to use a scissor jack to spread them apart enough to
reinstall them and now I have a pretty bad squeak. They work ok just noisy.
Sorry, but I have no idea what any of it is worth.

I bought one off of a guy on Team Chevelle. If you don't know how
the old GM manuals were set up, you'll have a hard time finding
stuff. I see he has one now with a search function that might be a
little better, but it's still not like looking in your Summit

their catalog on line or they will mail one to you. All items are listed
by the Chevrolet issued part number when our cars were built, so working
with an assembly manual which lists the GM part numbers makes ordering very
easy. Quality is excellent. Their pricing is less than the OGP's, Year
One's and Ground Up's of the world. I have also found them to be the
cheapest on shipping charges. None of the $00.00 - $30.00 = 8.95, $30.01 -
$60.00 = $17.95 shipping bits. My last shipment was a 12 X 12 X 36 box
filled with brake lines, hoses, wheel cylinders, radiator hoses, battery
tray and other stuff - all shipped for $8.00. They are worth looking

p.s. The way the software works is that as soon as somebody puts an item
into their basket, it is marked out of inventory. If they abandon the basket
w/o going through checkout, it still shows as not available (even though it
is) until I delete expired baskets. I'll be deleting baskets each morning,
so stuff might suddenly show as available again the next day. If you want
something and it ends up showing as out of stock, let me know and I'll tell
you if it's really out, if I'm planning to order more and when, etc.

Re: [Chevelle-List] parts

2003-01-31 Thread Dwight Fulton

Rocker panels are pretty straight forward they go on pretty much as they come off but, door skins are a different story and can be tough to put on without damage unless you've done it B-4. I would suggest you get someone that's done it to help you. I am not trying to imply that you can't do it it's just tricky getting the flange bent back over the door frame without damaging the skin. Also you must take care in aligning the skin on the door frame in the right place B-4 welding so when you hang the door you can align it with the fender and quarter. I would suggest you get the flange folded back over the door frame not weld it then hang the door so you can align the skin with the quarter panel fenderand then tack weld in place then remove and finish welding. This way you can be assured that everything lines up.
Dwight

It sure is Dwight. I got this young kid working in my shop and he's one of them rice burner kids. Got an Integra and a Del Sol and I bought him a VR-4 Mitsubishi Galant the other day, well I let him borrow the money anyway. My Chevelle has been sitting in the shop for the last few months and its stripped down to nothing just about except for that little ole 283 in it. Well today My motors came in. I had purchased 2 396's in the last coupla weeks and they both got shipped in today. He was asking me what those were and I told him they were "rice burner killers". LOL He started that stuff about them ole rusty motors ain't gonna mess with me stuff. I had to remind him!
I shouldn't be telling this, but I had a customers 88 corvette, box stock, in there a few months ago and he was spouting off about his little Del Sol with the motor swap in it.
I took him out in front of the shop and gave the little Del Sol a pretty good ass kickin
and he hasnt spouted off none until today. LOL Thought some of you guys might get a kick out of the story. Everyone have a good weekend!

Anybody know where I can get one? It's the pot metal
knob that you lock the vent window with passenger

I'm not sure if the handle part is the same.
BUT the 66 Elky's just like my 64 Elky's is different
than my 66 Malibu. Both Elky's have a piece on the
vent window that bolts with two screws on the bottom
of the vent glass.
My 66 Malibu has a piece (round) that goes through a
hole in the glass.

We sell them too (http://oldcarnetwork.com). Just search for Vent Window
Lock, or visit the Door Handles Hinges page.

You'll see that there are three of them. For Chevelle El Camino there are
two (left right side sold separately - these are the ones you need) that
fit 64-67 El Camino and the same ones also fit 1964-65 Chevelle (as Herb
pointed out). There is another that fits 66-67 Chevelle (sold in pairs).

No, I work for the General. The law is there to
protect the consumer. If they didn't make service parts, how would you get your
car fixed? If I remember, the law has been on the books since the '30's. I'm
sure the law has changed since, but it's still there in some form to make sure
that when Larry Z needs a part to repair his $25,000 Ziggymobile, he'll be able
to get it. After 10 years they figure you need a new car anyway I guess. The
length of time may have changed, but I don't think so. Many after market shops,
OPG, YEAR ONE, etc sell Genuine GM, NOS. This is what's left in the dealer
inventory or warehouse. GM didn't decide to be nice and retool and make a run of
these parts. These are parts they didn't sell. But, like I said, I may be wrong
on the time frame. That may have changed.

Sorry,
that's not true. They only sell GM parts that are still in production. They are
