RE: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
Hi Clint, I guess you forgot about my 66 Elky. I've had 10 wide rear wheels (5.5 back space) on it since I bought it in 97. To be honest,I did forget your Camino,Herb. However,I wasn't sure what rear end was under the car nor what rear wheel width, either. Regardless,I stand corrected and gladly so. It seems more and more that a 66-67 can handle practically the same rolling stock as a 68-72. Any way you look at it,that's good news. I was pretty surprised about the 6" that Chuck is running after seeing my car, but I can only report what he told me. As for the rear, I can only estimate from the space I have with my 9.5" wheels. I see a bit of room left, so I am sure a 10" wheel would be no problem, and perhaps an 11" with the right tires. A 305 is only an inch or so bigger than my 275, and I think there is enough room for that. Summer Car Shows (was Re: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels)
I think I need to see a 315 tire on a Chevelle in person. I've seen pictures, but I haven't seen any that look as low and tucked under as I think mine will be. Guess that means I need to hit some car shows this summer! Speaking of which, I know the So Cal Chevelle Camino Club show is coming up in July (are there any members on this list?), but do any of the So Cal folks here know of any other shows? I missed the April Super Chevy show. Thanks, Matt At 05:04 PM 6/20/2005, Clint Hooper wrote: I looked over Keith Anderson's 70 SS El Camino and some guy from Chicago's 70 SS Chevelle. That is good to know. I don't remember where I heard that about the Baers. You bring up a good point. I guess I can always add spacers if the backspacing is too much..that is, of course, if the overall width is okay. That's why I'm leaning toward a 10 instead of bigger for the rear. I want them nice and tucked under the fender anyway. Cheers, Matt At 04:14 PM 6/20/2005, Clint Hooper wrote: To the best of my knowledge,Matt, installing rear Baer disc brakes will not increase the track width. I've sold many sets of Baer rear kits and it has never been a problem. As for backspacing, always err on the liberal side. Too much can easily be corrected but too little means new wheels. You've spent too much on that car to get conservative now. I'm running the Baer brakes, which I hear require additional backspacing. So, I want to try for 6 in the rear and 5.5 to 5.75 in the front. I didn't realize I could go with as much as 6 in front. That might not be a bad idea for extra outer fender lip clearance. Of course, I plan to measure many, many times over before I actually order the wheels. The thought of it makes me nervous. That would be one expensive screw up. Although, my local tire guys says if he orders them, he'll exchange them if they don't fit. Might have to take him up on that! That much backspacing also reduces the scrub radius too, which is always a good thing. On those rear 18x10's,my suggestion for backspacing would be around 5.75-6. Re: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
In the Pro Street community, backhalving refers to the process of adding narrower frame rails and wider wheel tubs for the purpose of running much larger drag race rubber. My car was a former Pro Streeter before I purchased it and converted it to a G- machine/protourer. That's the reason my car can handle such large rear wheel tire combos. Re: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
66-67's don't have as large a wheelwell as the 68-72's. That being said, you can still easily run a 17x8 front w/4.5-5" backspacing and a rear 17x9.5 w/5.5" backspacing. My guess is you could fit up to a 255/40/17 on the front and definitely a 275/40/17 or 275/50/17 on the rear,,maybe even a 285/40/17. 17's and 18's are pretty much the change as far as rimwidths, backspacings, and tire widths. Hey Clint, have you seen examples of that wheel/tire combo? I'd love to see a picture if you know where to find one. I've been thinking about running 18X9.5, 275/35/18 up front and 18X10, 295/35/18 in the rear. I still need to measure for backspacing. Re: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
I've only seen that combo on late model Corvettes so far,Matt. No reason it wouldn't work on a 68-72,though. However, your idea sounds like it would also work and look great. With the Global West tubular a-arms,you can run upwards of 6" backspacing on the front. That much backspacing also reduces the scrub radius too, which is always a good thing. On those rear 18x10's,my suggestion for backspacing would be around 5.75"-6". And FWIW,you could still run the 315/30/18's on those 10" rims if you wanted to. RE: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
The max in front is close to 275. I have 17x9.5 wheels with 5 7/8" backspace and 275/40/17 wheels all around. You could probably be OK with 5 3/4" backspace and the same setup. Note that I have the Global West Tubular Upper A-Arms and 11" F-body spindle and brakes. Stock setups will be different. Chuck Hanson told me he used 17x9.5" wheels with a 6" backspace on his stock suspended '67. In the rear, I would be wary of 6" backspace, as not all cars are evenly put on the frame. My driver side had some minor rub that I fixed with the BFH on the wheel well (trunk) to make room. If you want max in the rear on a '66/'67, then you could try a 17x11" wheel with the proper sized tire. There is definitely a bit more room in the rear to the outside for my setup. Re: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
Probably wise to play it conservative on the rear tire until everything gets settled in. Re: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
Brad, the 6" backspace figure I quoted was for 68-72's. That's interesting that you can run a front 17x9.5 w/6" backspacing on a 67 with stock control arms, something I wasn't sure could be done.Nice to know a66-67 can handle the same size front rolling stock as a 68-72. However,I've never seen or heard of a 66-67 running a 10" rear rim, much less an 11" wide hoop. The 66-67 rear fenderwells are definitely tighter than the 68-72's. To the best of my knowledge,Matt, installing rear Baer disc brakes will not increase the track width. I've sold many sets of Baer rear kits and it has never been a problem. As for backspacing, always err on the liberal side. Too much can easily be corrected but too little means new wheels. You've spent too much on that car to get conservative now. Thanks Clint. That is good to know. I don't remember where I heard that about the Baers. You bring up a good point. I guess I can always add spacers if the backspacing is too much..that is, of course, if the overall width is okay. That's why I'm leaning toward a 10 instead of bigger for the rear. I'm running the Baer brakes, which I hear require additional backspacing. So, I want to try for 6" in the rear and 5.5" to 5.75" in the front. I didn't realize I could go with as much as 6" in front. Thanks for the advice and I'll definitely let you know when I have some pictures! -Matt At 12:38 PM 6/20/2005, Clint Hooper wrote: I've only seen that combo on late model Corvettes so far,Matt. I want to see pictures when you get that wicked combo.g Clint Hooper HH Custom, owner 1969 El Camino ProTourer 2001 H-D FLHR custom bagger http://dalesplace.com/misc/friends/clint/clint_hooper.htm - Original Message - From: Matthew Post Hey Clint, have you seen examples of that wheel/tire combo? I'd love to see a picture if you know where to find one. I've been thinking about running 18X9.5, 275/35/18 up front and 18X10, 295/35/18 in the rear. I still need to measure for backspacing. I have the GW front arms and went for about 3" lower on all corners. -Matt At 04:24 PM 6/19/2005, Clint Hooper wrote: With proper backspacing,an 18x11 rear wheel and 315/30/18 tire would fit, too. Re: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
I was wanting to run at least 275/60's on the back with at least 8 inch wheels. I thought of going with a 10 inch wheel with a 295/50 but I was afraid that would be to much. I plan on running 215/60's on the front with a 7 or 8 in wheel. On my '66 I haveNitto NT555P275/40ZR17 out back. My wheels are 17" Budnik Fontanas17x9.5 (5.5 BS). I think they look really nice without any rub at all. I probably could had gone a little larger - I've seen post on www.pro-touring.comwith guys running 285s - 305s. Re: [Chevelle-list] Survey on Wheels
Check out the Wheel Tire Database at Team Chevelle. http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33229 On a 68-72,up to a 275 front and 315 rear tire can be fitted. Backspace is the critical part. Getting it right will allow up to a 9.5" front and 11" rear wheel. 335's will not fit without frame wheel tub mods. I say this from personal experience. I'm running 17x9's with 5" backspacing on the front and 17x13's with 7" backspacing on the rear. Tires are 275/40/17 and 335/35/17 Kumho V700 Victoracers at the present but I have a new set of Michelin Pilot Sports waiting to go on. My El Camino has been backhalved, though. It would be easier to help if we knew what diameter wheels you want to use;15--20"? You can run 10" rims no problem with a 5.5" backspacing. If you have the budget for it, you can have custom rims made up and fit up to a 335 tire on it.
