Re: [Chevelle-list] engine swap -- Hey, Me too
i personally think by the time you mess with all the little things you could buy a rebuilt 350 to put in it Larry (Z)
Re: [Chevelle-list] engine swap -- Hey, Me too
I have actually done the swap. It is not bad but you will have to get frame mounts from a 68-72 that had a Olds engine. The battery really needs to be switched to the left fender but the starter wires are long enough. The trans bolt patterns are different and the trans kickdown cable is hooked to the gas pedal if it has a TH350. The exhaust is different because of the cat. on the '76 but the manifolds are the same so an exhaust shop can bend the pipe as if it is a 70 Cutlass. I believe the hole in the firewall for the throttle cable is bigger on the 76 so you might need to file a bit. I can't remember how I dealt with the kickdown cable. I believe I copied the holes in the firewall and made it and I also used the gas pedal off of a 72 Cutlass. E-mail if you have any specific questions, its been a while but I have a pretty good long term memory still. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 3:27 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] engine swap -- Hey, Me too Hey listers, I'm actually thinking of swapping my engine for a non-matching #'s one but I didn't want you guys to rag on me that much. Re: [Chevelle-list] engine swap -- Hey, Me too
I'm hardly an expert on engine swaps, but I might be able to help with some things. Chevy and BOP-C (Buick Olds Pontiac=Cadillac) blocks have different transmission mounting holes. Some transmissions (TH200-4R, for example) have a dual-pattern bellhousing, one that is drilled for either bolt pattern, but some transmissions are for one or the other. Call a trans shop in your area and ask them how to tell the difference - I believe the Chevy trans-to-block bolt bosses are closer together than those for a BOP-C trans. Don't take this as gospel truth, but I do think that the 350 would fit on your 70 with little or no modifications. IIRC, the same frame was used for all A-body cars (excepting wagons and El Caminos) in any model year. Thus your frame may have mounting holes already drilled in it for an Olds motor mount. Unless the Olds block is exceptionally tall or wide, it should physically fit in your engine compartment. Your accessories (alternator, power steering, A/C) may not be in the same locations as on the Chevy block, so longer wires/hoses etc. may be needed to connect them up to the Olds accessories locations. Your carb may fit on both intakes - measuring the dimensions of the bases and the distances between the mounting bolts should tell you. If it does fit, though, it may not have a high enough CFM rating (cubic feet per minute, a measure of flow through the carb) for the larger demands of the 350. Does anyone have the formula for CFM ratings to hand? I hope this helps, Dave. wrote: Thank Hoss, That info was very informative. I kinda wanted the new 4barrel and everything else connected to the 350, though I bought a 4 barrel intake for my 307 about 1 1/2 yrs ago and never put it on. Again thanks for the info. I'll try to find out more specs on the 350 maybe that could help too! Anymore suggestions? Thanx Hoss, Charles PS. I wrote down your concerns like mounting holes and I'll check on'em immediately. I'm sorry, it was the distributor that he turned not the carb. I'm not too good with auto mechanic and sometimes get confused but gimme a PC and I'll show you something :) -- www.swingvictoria.com

RE: [Chevelle-list] engine swap -- Hey, Me too
8. So I came to you guys and someone said my time was off 180 degrees. 9. Got mechanic to turn carb 180 degrees -- wouldn't start and wouldn't run properly 10. Heard it could be bent valve, rocker arm, or something but that's another $500 or more job. 11. I have a 76 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a 350 that I had rebuilt 2 years ago w/cam, new carb-and the darn trans when out a week later 12. I want to swap engines -- no need to have a rebuilt engine connected to fried trans and fried engine connect to 4 year old rebuilt original powerglide. Opinions on engine swaps are about as good as opinions on paint schemes, everyone will be different. At any rate, here's my opinion. First, don't go to mechanics that will turn your carb 180 degrees. Nobody will blame you for replacing a 307. Engine swaps in general are PITA's mostly because of the overlooked details. The main one is bracket mounts for accessories. If your 307 has mounting holes in front of the heads, and your replacement engine also doesyou are 90% there, as the rest is just grunt work. If not, then you have to find, buy, fabricate brackets to hold your alt, PS pump, AC, etc and is very difficult to get it to look good without spending loads of cash. Now for the replacement. I am not an expert on Olds 350's, but I am fairly sure they are different than Chevy 350's. I'm sure you cannot swap heads or intakes between the two, so that would make me think twice before swapping it and finding out what else doesn't fit. You need to check with someone who knows for sure. I have seen on various web pages descriptions of 307s being bored to 377 with a stroker kit. I never looked further into it and don't know who has this stroker kit but it sounds promising. That would make the 'swap' alot easier. A night searching the internet should find something. Also remember, swapping your engine will put stress on your stock tranny that it's not used to.
