Check the area around the sender. Look at the 'locking ring' that holds it
on. Where the wire attaches. Mine needed to be cleaned and now works great.

Had the same thing happen on my "69".  To make a long story short, after
testing my sending unit I discovered it was bad and replaced it.  Problem
solved, gas gauge has worked every since.  My gauge was doing the same
thing going way past full  no matter how much fuel was in the
tank.   Get a new fuel gauge sending unit and I bet it will
solve you problem.  Good luck.

Harlan, It sounds like the sender is shorted out or the wire to the sender is
shorted to ground. When I test a gauge I ground the sender wire and the gauge
will read full plus if the gauge is good. Try uhooking the sender wire from the
gauge to see if it drops to empty.

Yep!!! Just dealt with this for weeks. Check your grounds especially at the
tank. You may have to pull the sender out and clean the ring that holds it
in. That is what grounds the system and it gets dirty with road grime. Let
me know what you find.

Ok,
thanks. One of the many brilliant things Ron Miller did when he worked on my
car was to cut the ground wire instead of disconnecting it like a person who
actually cares would do, and then not bother to re-attach it. So, when I got
the car back I had to drop the tank and re-attach the wire. It must have come
apart. I guess I'll have to drop the tank again unless the problem magically
disappears the same way it magically appeared.

Well,
compared to waking up yesterday to find out that the hot water supply line to
my washing machine had sprung a leak and my kitchen was flooded and floor tiles
buckled this seems minor.

I think I'll

RE: [Chevelle-list] fuel gauge

2004-05-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dave,

I think you need a new sender (or gauge).
If it was to change from 90 to 240 straight you could just put a 150ohm resistor
inline and be done.
But since you want a scale (std chevy being 0 to 90 ohms) that would make it go from
150-240ohms instead.
I dont know how much the bottom scale on that 240ohm gauge is but its either 0 or like
30 or so if i remember well.
The sweep of the gauge would therefore be from approx. half tank (when tank is empty)
to full tank (when tank is full)

RE: [Chevelle-List] Fuel gauge part 2

2002-10-23 Thread Spud

I guess this is too late for you, but...

Before you replace a sender, check the replacement for the
appropriate resistance across the coil. If it's right,
then remove the wiring from the old unit (leave it the
tank, for now) and connect it to the replacement.

Move the float lever arm through its range of motion with
the key on. Be sure to let the gas gauge settle for each
movement of the float lever; the dash gauges are slow
responding.

Be sure to check grounds, as others advised, if all else
checks out and the unit still isn't cooperating. As a
quick check, you can take the ground on a long lead
directly from the battery.

John, I pretty sure it's a different tank. After
looking at it I can see where the filler neck has been cut and has a rubber

the stock tank would line up and not be off set. When I burn this tank of fuel I
am going to remove the sender and try to bend the arm to match the old one. If
that doesn't work I'll just drill a hole through the bed into the tank and use a
stick. LOL  Thats everyone for your help. Vernon

Vernon,

Is it a digital or analog meter? A digital most likely will have a read out in
numbers lit up on a screen. An analog meter has a needle that moves across a
scale.

A digital is much easier to read and understand. If it's an analog
it is going to take some explaining but I can do it if you need me
to.

I still can't get my fuel gauge to work. The
next thing is to take the new sender out and see if by chance the arm is
bent wrong on it. I will compare it to the old one. With a full tank of fuel
it reads just a little over 1/2. On the old one it has 90 ohms stamped
on it. I need to find someone that knows how to read a ohm meter.

  I don't know if
this will be helpful or not, but according to the info in my Dakota Digital

read 0 ohms empty and 30 ohms full.  The second one is 0
ohms empty and 90 ohms full.

  Check the ground
wire.  If it's like mine, it goes from the tank to either a nearby frame
or underbody sheet metal.  Make sure the wire is there, and that it makes
good contact.  You may need to wire brush the contact area.  I think
that a gage should read from 0-100 ohms, but this is tough to verify once you
have the sender in the tank!

  The problem sure
sounds like a loose wire somewhere with the intermittent
  readings.

I forgot to say that when I put in the new
sender it showed 1/8 tank of gas which should have been right. But the next
day when I started it it peged the gauge like it wasn't even hooked up. Went
to the gas station and filled it and it showed 1/8 tank again. After driving
about 1 mile it slowly went up to 3/4 and that is where I am now. Thanks,

I back
up what Don is saying here 100%.   While it's not the only possible
solution, it's the most likely. Make sure your ground goes to your engine first
and has a clean, tight connection.

If not
already done, run a ground from your engine to your body with tight, clean,
connections. Make sure that the connector on the sending unit is
tight.

Use
a small wire brush to clean terminals and the place on the body and engine
where the connections are made. It must be bare metal so use dielectric grease
if you want protection, but go easy.

What
kind of shape is the wiring harness in? If these are the original wires then
please consider re-wiring the car. It would be ashamed to have a rare and
valuable collectors car go up in flames due to insulation that wasn't that great
to begin with, now is brittle, and who knows how many micky
mouse modifications from previous owners.

Just
my opinion..

I'm going to look at the fuel gauge ground
tomorrow. Everything on a 64 dash bezel is grounded through one small screw.
It's one of the screws that holds the dash bezel on. The only problem there is
that the cigarette lighter also grounds through the same screw and it works
fine. One more thing my wife calls the car Christine and I'm starting to believe
her. REALLY!  Vernon

I have not looked
at this myself, but could it be a ground in the dash at the gage?  Maybe
you can diagnose this if you still have your old gage and sender.  Use the
old sender and see how the gage reacts in various situations.  Use the old
gage and see if it reads like the new sender...
