Ok guys, you are gonna make me have to admit my Pontiac connection. In
1963,
As the first GTO began to hit the market, Jim Wangers, Pontiac marketing
manager came up with the Tiger tie in. They did adds both in print and TV
with a tiger climbing under the hood of the new GTO. They used the Tiger
theme for several years. You might remember the GTO Tiger racing team
from
the mid sixties. This was also Jim's idea. They would come to local drag
strips and challenge the locals to race the tiger. Had drivers in Tiger
suits. Anyway, I grew up at an ESSO station. That is where my hotrod
roots
began to grow. I believe the Pontiac tiger pre-empted Esso's. Not
positive
about that, but the Uni Royal Tiger Paws were definately after Pontiac's
 Tiger.
Yes I am old enough to have been there. Although I am a Chevelle nut, I
do
own a couple of 64 Pontiacs.
 Mike Holleman

Did Pontiac ever give out tiger tails? I know the only ones I got were
from the Esso station. My Dad was a travelling salesman, and drove
Pontiacs from 1958 until he was no longer able to drive. I went with him
to the dealer when he bought his cars, and I feel sure that the salesman
would have given me a tail if they were available. Dad put 85 to 100k
miles a year on his Ponchos, and he traded every year. I can clearly
remember the '63, '64, '65 Catalinas that he had, I don't remember any
tiger tails. I did my best to talk him into a GTO, but it was too d$n
small for what I need! (I remember that clearly too g) In 69 he got a
Bonneville with the 428, 4bb, dual exhausts, positrac, sport suspension
package. I was 17 years old, a total bonehead, he let me take it out
one
day. I locked up the brakes when a old man started to pull out in front
of
me, spun it around, and hit a curb with the left rear wheel. After that
the car drove real weird; had a 'whoompity, whoompity noise in the
back. I took the car home, told the old man what I did, got my butt
whipped even though I was 17 and had owned up to my stupidity. I think is
cost about $400 to put a new rear end under the car. I bent the axle
probably the control arms who knows what else. Dad got rid of the
Bonnie
soon after that, mainly because of the bad gas mileage. If I ever find a
GTO that's as nice as my SS, I'll probably try to trade for it. I still
have a soft spot for Pontiacs.

Yep, Back in 66 I had a 66 GTO 360hp with redline Tigerpaws. New then low

tires to be a bit more sticky. Tigerpaws were IT in those days and red

paws that were huge compared to the Tiger behind them.
And as mentioned before with great detail the Tiger in your tank came from

Now my question regarding tires. These days it is easy to find a Goodyear
dealer but I am
not sure about a Goodrich seller. Did the Goodrich tires come out on

Dale
Cleaning the windshield provided one of the few fringe benefits of
working as a pump jockey in the late 60's early 70's. This
was the time of mini skirts and halter tops, and occasionally you would
get a glimpse of heaven whilst rubbing the windscreen. I worked at
a Phillips 66 station where we had to 1. Gas the car.
2. Clean the windshield the rear window, and if the customer asked,
clean the side windows 3. Open the hood check the oil
battery water levels and 4. Vacuum the floorboards--there were vacuum
cleaners mounted on posts at the pump islands to do this. A lot of
stuff to do, and we had to do it all if even if the customer only bought
$1 of gas.

I have been around cars and car shows my entire life, however, I don't
have
a clue about the tail sticking out of the trunk. Where did it start?
What
meaning, if any, does it have? Any trivial information would be good to
know, so this year when at our cruise nights and my 6 yr twins ask what's
the sticking out for? I'll have better answers for them rather than just
laughing with them about the cat or raccoon that is stuck in the trunk.

My recollection is that it all got started with an Exxon gas commercial many years
ago, where they promoted a tiger in your tank. They sold or gave away tiger tails
that could be hung out the gas tank lid. At least that is my memory of when these
things got started.

Might it be a throw-back to the Pontiacs of the mid-60's? Didn't they have a

To my knowledge it's just a fad, kinda like the Baby on board signs that
everyone used to have plastered on their windows, or the fake bullet hole
stickers on cars. Admittedly, I have laughed at the 'ol Garfield smashed in
the trunk lid, but after seeing about 200 of them, it gets old. The latest
thing I have seen is a baseball that is cut in half, and applied to a
window, with a sticker, to make it look as though it has smashed through the
glass.

Put a Tiger in your Tank, I think it was in the early 70's or possibly the late 60's. Still have one and still enjoy hanging it out of my gas door. I like it better than those silly dolls that are hiding the faces up against the side of the cars. My 2 cents worth Bob 71 Elky

Well, I guess that this will show my age..I can't remember the exact year,
but Esso (now Exxon) had an ad campaign with the slogan Put a Tiger in
your tank! Part of the campaign was when you bought gas at the Esso
station, they would give you a tiger tail to attach to your fuel
filler. Of course, many of them were hung on the mirror or out of the
doors or the trunk. The tiger is still around as Exxon's mascot, but he
hasn't reached the popularity that he had in the 60's. There were a lot of
ad campaigns like this in the old days, but I can't remember any more of
them right now. Maybe a brain cell or two will kick in later I'll tell
you about them. One thing I do remember is that Amoco was the only
unleaded gas that could be bought then. We called it white gas, because
it didn't have any color to it, and it smelled different than the leaded
gasolines. We used it for fuel in Coleman lanterns stoves in place of
the more expensive Coleman fuel. It was usually priced 2~3 cents higher
than other fuels too, around 36 to 40 cents per gallon. :-))

Ok guys, you are gonna make me have to admit my Pontiac connection. In 1963,
As the first GTO began to hit the market, Jim Wangers, Pontiac marketing
manager came up with the Tiger tie in. They did adds both in print and TV
with a tiger climbing under the hood of the new GTO. They used the Tiger
theme for several years. You might remember the GTO Tiger racing team from
the mid sixties. This was also Jim's idea. They would come to local drag
strips and challenge the locals to race the tiger. Had drivers in Tiger
suits. Anyway, I grew up at an ESSO station. That is where my hotrod roots
began to grow. I believe the Pontiac tiger pre-empted Esso's. Not positive
about that, but the Uni Royal Tiger Paws were definately after Pontiac's
Tiger.
Yes I am old enough to have been there. Although I am a Chevelle nut, I do
own a couple of 64 Pontiacs.

(I remember that clearly too g) In 69 he got a
Bonneville with the 428, 4bb, dual exhausts, positrac, sport suspension
package. I was 17 years old, a total bonehead, he let me take it out one
day. I locked up the brakes when a old man started to pull out in front of
me, spun it around, and hit a curb with the left rear wheel. After that
the car drove real weird; had a 'whoompity, whoompity noise in the
back. I took the car home, told the old man what I did, got my butt
whipped even though I was 17 and had owned up to my stupidity. I think is
cost about $400 to put a new rear end under the car. I bent the axle
probably the control arms who knows what else. Dad got rid of the Bonnie
soon after that, mainly because of the bad gas mileage. If I ever find a
GTO that's as nice as my SS, I'll probably try to trade for it. I still
have a soft spot for Pontiacs.
