RE: [Chevelle-List] 1968 w/ Tripoli Turquoise - how many made???

2002-09-19 Thread Craig A. Ellis

Well, I used to run Easytrieves to pull up warranty claim data to validate
GM's tax deductions for those expenses. The stacks of greenbar (132 printer
paper, tractor feed style) paper were, literally, eight feet tall and filled
whole rooms down at GM HQ in Detroit. We used to stay up till 1 or 2 AM to
run the systems when computer demand was low because the workload these
programs would cause was so large. So, short answer? Yes, they have the
data, but ONLY extract the minimum to accomplish a specific goal. GM Canada
converted their old records years ago, probably as part of a giant system
upgrade of some sort. Who knows why, but they can querry those files and
bring up the info. All I know is that there are a whole bunch of gearheads
who work FOR GM in the US who no doubt have tried everything to get info on
their own cars with no more success than you and I. Honestly, I don't think
the info is out there any more.

BTW, the way they found your buddy with the Chevy pickup is probably through
motor vehicle records. GM can get those via mag tape or cartridges and
simply runs a little Easytrieve against the data to fetch all VINs with the
correct prefix.

Craig, you touched on something that really makes me wonder about GM's info.
The warranty issues. Wouldn't they have to keep record for warranty and
recall info? What about the Older Chevy trucks which a few years ago GM
conceded could explode due to the saddle mount gas tanks? They had to
contact those owners who currently had those trucks. My buddy had recently
bought a 77? Chevy pickup. He got a letter from GM offering a rebate on a
new GM truck, according to him. Now there is no way he was the original
owner, yet GM was able to contact him. The only way I can see this is
possible is to run VIN's for current owners of these vehicles. How is it
possible that they had the info for these trucks but not for our cars? I
fully understnd and realize the volumes of info they must have as you
mentioned, but it has got to be around somewhere? Gm canada and Pontiac
historical society have gotten it. Was it magic? Just a thought
Maybe we should all initiate a class action lawsuit for the rear windows and
lower fenders rotting out on our cars. They all did it right from the
factory due to leaky rear window seals, right? We could argue that it was a
critical design flaw and we should be compensated. Maybe if we had the
lawsuit and won a settlement, GM would be forced to find the records to
contact all current Chevelle owners???

RE: [Chevelle-List] 1968 w/ Tripoli Turquoise - how many made???

2002-09-19 Thread Craig A. Ellis

I think part of the problem GM has with the data from the 60's and 70's is
the recordkeeping systems in place at that time. That era used IBM punch
cards for input and magnetic tape for long term storage. No Windows, no
email, no nothing. In order to review the info, you had to write an
"Easytrieve" program and print it out. A lot of those records are/were kept
only to address disagreements with the IRS. I know this because I once was
responsible for the EDP audits for a number of GM operating units and am
very familiar with their systems from the early 80's onward. I was the poor
sap writing the Easytrieve code...

So, a lot of the records we would love to see were never converted from
their old format to modern formats. It's worthwhile to consider what an
expensive task that would be and that they would never spend the money on it
unless they were forced to (as in an IRS issue). Also, we are talking about
MOUNTAINS of information - not just build stats but warranty claims (which
are all tracked by VIN) for millions and millions of cars over decades. And
all of this information is "comingled". It's not like there is one tape out
there somewhere with a summary of the build data on it. Considering the
quantity, it's amazing they bother to retain any info at all. Also, it is
entirely possible the mag tapes they wrote the data out on for storage
simply deteriorated and became unreadable. This is a common problem. These
tapes are often stored, literally, in caverns tunneled out of mountains in
Utah, etc. No kidding - I've been there. They put the tapes in and forget
about them for twenty years.

There are no known numbers of cars painted a particular color, just as there
aren't numbers on how many bench seat, red, 4-speed cars came with a vinyl
top and AM/FM radio. I don't mean to be sarcastic here, but GM claims all
records were lost. The only real numbers we do know are how many of a
certain model series were built such as 180,401 Malibu V-8 coupes and 55,309
1968 Super Sport coupes (see

RE: [Chevelle-List] 1968 w/ Tripoli Turquoise - how many made???

2002-09-18 Thread 396guy

There are no known numbers of cars painted a particular color, just as there
aren't numbers on how many bench seat, red, 4-speed cars came with a vinyl
top and AM/FM radio. I don't mean to be sarcastic here, but GM claims all
records were lost. The only real numbers we do know are how many of a
certain model series were built such as 180,401 Malibu V-8 coupes and 55,309
1968 Super Sport coupes (see
http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/information/production_numbers.htm)

2002-09-18 Thread 396guy

Chad,

I believe this is Tripoli Turquoise in 68 -
http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle_shows/aces2002/68-69/p001206.jpg -
one of my favorite colors beside orange.

Your prices are probably pretty close except the shifter. B&M shifters run
in the $150-$175 range. For $11.5K, I'd check the mechanicals like brakes,
suspension, engine condition (such as a compression check, will it run on
unleaded fuel, etc.) You don't mention the transmission type, TH350 or TH400
maybe?

2002-09-18 Thread Chad P.

beautiful car man!! I love it! '67's are just one of my most favorites!!!
I love the 1970, but the more I look at the boxier style (1966 & 1967), The
more I like them. :-) I can find all the paint codes, but just cannot find
out how many were made. How come it seems like no one wants to answer
anyone's questions anymore!? The last 2 or 3 question's I've had, in a
period of a couple of weeks, have been answered by only 1 or 2 guys, instead
of the usual 5 - 10. :-(

2002-09-18 Thread LXVIISS

Chad,

I can't answer your question with statistics, but I believe that it was a
pretty rare color. In 1967, it was called Emerald Turquoise with paint code
KK. I have a 1967 SS with that color and haven't seen another one yet. I'm
sure they're out there, though. I remember the color well from '50s and '60s
cars - I knew someone with a '62 Impala SS in that color - a beautiful car.
