RE: [Chevelle-List] Column Shift Indicator Lens

2002-09-03 Thread Dean Vandergriff

Dan,
A 350 or 400 trans will work fine with the existing column
shifter. The trick with the indicator lens is that the lens is not a
flat piece. It is thick at the bottom tapers toward the top. You may
be able to make a flat lens shim it in place but I haven't tried yet.

Dave,
On my 65, I removed two screws securing the chrome cover, and the
indicator glass came right out with it. Are you putting in a TH350/400?

If so I would be real interested to know how you get the column shifter

to work with it. Take it easy. Dan McIntosh

Sweet - that sounds easy enough to do. I'd heard that it can be
removed without removing the cover, but I wanted to make sure before
I did it.

I'm putting in a TH200-4R. I want to keep the column shifter for a
while, due at least in part to the prices of floor shifters up here,
but if it doesn't work the it doesn't work. We'll see what happens,
I guess.

You should be more than happy with it then. Those are very close to
all the opinions I got.

Yes. Every shop I talked to said it was *possible* to make a
bombproof 200-4R, but it would be easier, cheaper and resulting in a
higher quality trans to start with a 700-R4. Don't get a 200 unless
you're looking for a stock replacement!

 Hey!

Is there a recommended way to remove the lens that shows which gear
you're in? I'm swapping out the Powerglide, and want to replace the
lens with one that relates to the shifting pattern of my new trans.

 Thanks,
 Dave.

Hey Dave,

What kind of motor do you have in front of that 200-R4? And where was your
trans built? I've read in the rags that they're decent for mild V8s, but
others have had serious trouble with them. Just curious..

I didn't catch this one the first time...200's are very weak transmissions...even built they can bite it hard with any real HP in front...hope you've got the GN 8.5..they can handle a little more HP...if not plan on getting it replaced soon

Hi!

It's a (mostly) stock inline 6. I'm building it myself w/ a kit from
BM. I don't expect that my engine will produce dangerous amounts of
power - I'm doing this swap to get away from 15 mpg. :-) It's my
daily driver, not a race car by any means.

From talking to local trans shops, opinions seem to vary widely.
Some say they're rubbish all the time, some say post-86 are better,
some say any year makes for a good foundation. Mine's out of a 90
Caprice with a 5 liter, for what it's worth. For 'real' power,
regardless of your definition of that, everyone here recommends a
700-R4. I'm not making 'real' power, and I'm not very keen on
hacking up my floorpan to make a 700-R4 fit, so this was my only
option for an OD trans.
