Disconnect the battery. Use a piece if wire like an unbent paper clip to press into the hole at the front of the switch. Insert the key and turn to the Acc. position and a little beyond that. Re: [Chevelle-list] Ignition Switch Removal - 65 Chevelle
Take a paper clip insert it in the lock face. You will see a hole. Depress a pin and turn the key. The whole lock and face will come out. -Original Message- From: chevelle-list-boun...@chevelles.net [mailto:chevelle-list-boun...@chevelles.net] On Behalf Of Larry Williams Sent: Saturday, June 20, 2009 10:22 PM To: Chevelle List Subject: [Chevelle-list] Ignition Switch Removal - 65 Chevelle How do I remove the ignition switch? RE: [Chevelle-List] Ignition switch removal and testing
Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Ignition switch removal and testing Dave, I've replaced several over time and here's the easiest way I've found. 1. Disconnect battery. 2. Remove steering wheel - gets it out the way so you can work. 3. Remove all screws under the dash pad and along the sides. 4. Insert paper clip into hole in ignition switch and turn switch (with key) towards Accessory to remove the tumbler. 5. Drop (pull) dash down just enough to get your hand between the dash pad area and the top of the dash to unplug the wiring from the switch. A couple of large towels come in handy to keep from scratching up the dash and steering column when "pulling" it down for hand/wrist clearance. 6. Unscrew the bezel retaining nut. This can be a tough one but I've had success by using a large pair of Channel-lock type pliers and a couple of shop rags to keep from scratching it. 7. Remove ignition switch. Reverse to assemble. Dave if you have a/c pull the venting under the dash below the a/c heater control, pull the a/c heater controls, pull the radio, reach up behind the dash, disconnect it, unscrew the bezel. and drop out the ignition Bill B. 67 Malibu Edmond Oklahoma http://groups.msn.com/SpidrManspics http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/chevellerestoration/ - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, May 29, 2003 5:49 PM Subject: [Chevelle-List] Ignition switch removal and testing > Hey guys, > > I'm having trouble starting my 67. Re: [Chevelle-List] Ignition switch removal
Title: Re: [Chevelle-List] Ignition switch removal Thanks Wayne, Mine seems to be gummed up with rust pretty good. The previous owner left my convertible out in the elements with a torn up top and I’m dealing with all the rust that has built up on just about everything metal on the interior. I’m gonna let PB Blaster do some of the hard work, and hopefully things will pop loose for me in the morning. Once I get the ignition switch out, anyway to test it for shorts? My wiring isn’t all back in yet and I don’t want to stick a dead switch back into the dash. They’re cheap, so I will probably just replace it along with my key tumbler. Thanks, Kurt on 3/6/03 5:10 PM, Wayne at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Kurt..The method you describ should work? I use a small allen as the depress wire to remove the key-lock cylinder.. Title: Message Agree with Dan. My 67's only have one hole, but it takes a "feel" to ensure the plunger is depressed enough to allow you to turn the cylinder as far as it needs to go to the left and then remove it. A normal paper-clip is usually just the right size and stiffness to do the job. Dan: yep! "Leftmost" (adjective) - Farthest to the left. As opposed to "rightmost" which is either the farthest to the right or you're rightmost (correct) of the time. :*) Dale McIntosh TC Gold #92/ACES #1709 67SS/67 Elky Dale’s Place – My 67 SS and 67 El Camino ChevelleStuff – Decoding info on 64-72 Chevelles Team 67 – 1967 Chevelle/El Camino Specific Midwest Chevelles – Midwest Chevelle Show Information -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dan McIntoshSent: Thursday, March 06, 2003 7:08 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] Ignition switch removal wiggle it, just a little bit :) sounds like you're doing it right... sometimes they jut need played with some...
