Re: [Chevelle-List] TH350 to 400
Larry, I agree that a TH-400 is the stronger of the two...I just posted that a built TH-350 CAN survive behind a moderately stout big-block. I'm not afraid to run 1000hp thru my TH-350...no trans-brakes allowed at this level. Emil: it may have worked for you but I spun the drum and inner shaft 3 times on my th 350 behind a built 454. Went to a th400 and my trany problems went away but started blowing rearends. as far as I'm concerned th400 is far superior to th350. Larry (z)
Re: [Chevelle-List] TH350 to 400 swap in '66
Can you please tell me the dimensions of the bolt that holds the rear of the tranny to the cross member. I went to the local NAPA and they could not find me anything. i think it is just 2 1/2in bolts but i dont know how long any help would be greatly appreciated - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The TH400 wasn't available in the Chevelle until 67 and the TH350 was 69 I believe. Re: [Chevelle-List] TH350 to 400
A TH-350 can be built to handle plenty of big-block power. I had a built TH-350 in my 69Nova 461CID w/350shot of gas(900+hp) and never had a problem. I sold the Nova(less TH-350)and freshened the tranny up and it now resides in my 93Z 383 blown w/two-stage nitrous Camaro. My TH-350 has over 500 hard passes on it. RE: [Chevelle-List] TH350 to 400 swap in '66
Hmmm, this is where it gets a little bit murky. I didn't realize that the TH400 was not available in '66. I put in your zip code and looked it up as a 1969 SS 396 2dr w/ TH400 but got no results. Sorry about that. You may want to try partsvoice.com and/or uneedapart.com. It is normal to see some play in the TC before it is bolted up, but make sure it is clicked in all the way before you try to bolt it. John -Original Message- Thanks John! Evidently, the second set of holes was not added until later when the TH400 was an option. Yes I think a new driveshaft is going to be the way to go. thanks, I would love the junkyard reference. 20879 (Gaithersburg, MD) The TC seemed to sit good (clicked into place). I have not bolted it to the flywheel yet, but there appears to about a 1/2 inch of play. Is this normal? One tip: of course you will want to make sure that the torque converter is properly seated. It will click into place. Make sure that after you bolt it to the flywheel, you can turn the flywheel by hand. If it's jammed up (from the TC not being all the way in), you'll damage your new transmission. I will keep the kickdown in mind. Thanks! I am driving up to ATI in Baltimore tomorrow for the core return. I will see what goodies they have to offer. -Original Message- From: Bill Vander Werf [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, May 29, 2002 8:19 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] TH350 to 400 swap in '66 I replaced the 350 with a Turbo 350 with a 454 and a Turbo 400 in my 71. The crossmember had to be moved to the rear 6 inches, but in the 71 the holes were already provided in the frame from the factory so I didn't have to drill. I had to have 1/2" taken out of my driveshaft and I had to shorten the emergency brake cable. I found a yoke at the boneyard. It uses the same u-joint as the smaller yoke. Now is a good time to replace u-joints anyway. I believe the converters will swap but I would double check that with a transmission shop. You will have to provide a switch (B&M makes a kit) for the kickdown because the Turbo 400 uses an electric kickdown whereas the Turbo 350 uses a cable. Is there any simple workaround (other than drilling new mounting holes) for the cross member locating 6" further to the rear? If it's like my 69, it will just slide back. There should be more than one set of holes. Obviously I need a new slip yoke. Any recommendations for a manufacturer for this and the U-joint?
