Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant
My first car ever was a 70 Camaro. The previous owner had decided to jack it up in the back with air shocks so he could fit off-brand drag radials (think knockoff MT Sportsmans) under it. To aid in quarter panel clearance, he cut the wheel wells really huge and did a TERRIBLE job of bondo-ing new wheel wells. It looked like a 3 year old did it with PlayDoh. When I took it to the body shop, one of the guys came over with a hammer, hit the wheel well and the whole quarter crumbled into a gray pile. Classic Industries got rich off me that week! ;-) Karl Groves Master Certified CIW http://www.karlgroves.com Will Work For Parts: http://chevelle.karlcore.com/detail.php?id=3 > -Original Message- > From: John Nasta [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2006 8:37 PM > To: The Chevelle Mailing List > Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant > > I just remembered why I was so shocked that the rubber fuel > line between my sending unit and the steel line was patched > with electrical tape. Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant
I have a similar story. A friend of mine that lived down the street from my parents' house had a 69 Malibu. It was a beater. Primer grey with a black vinyl top, 350 auto and a 2 barrel carb. I had lots of fun riding in it in high school and always loved the look of the 69. Anyway, a year or so after high school he decided to rebuild the motor. Basically, he started taking the motor apart, but never finished for some reason. I can't remember why now, but he was fed up and frustrated with the project. Since he knew how much I loved the car, he offered to sell it to me. I said, "how much?" He said, "$200 and it's yours." I gave him the $200 and we pushed it home 3 or 4 blocks over to my parents house. A week or two later I pulled the motor and trans. Sold the trans to a buddy for $150 and the motor (in pieces) to someone else for $100. So I actually made $50 on the deal! That was about 12 years ago now, but I still have the car today. I just remembered why I was so shocked that the rubber fuel line between my sending unit and the steel line was patched with electrical tape. You have to take the tank out just to get to it. Can you imagine going through all of that and not being willing to spend what, a quarter maybe on a three inch piece of rubber hose? I think it's safe to say that mine was pretty much put through the wringer.

KarlDon't forget, back in the day most of our Chevelles were drivers. Handed down til some 16 Y/O was driving it to school & McD's. Back then (at least in my case) finances were tight and it was whatever it took to keep it on the road. Didn't make it right, but I'd have to admit to my fair share of reverse engineering. Nowadays I get satisfaction in getting it right - or at least better. And wondering what was I thinking. BTW - looks like your chevelle found a good home, good luck with it.On 1/24/06, Ron Menchey < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:> Welcome to the world of being a "car guy"...Not everyone does a 100 point> car...so now you can have the pleasure of doing your car the right > way.HAVE FUN> > Mench> - Original Message -> From: "Karl Groves" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>> To: "'The Chevelle Mailing List'" < Chevelle-list@chevelles.net>> Sent: Monday, January 23, 2006 10:06 PM> Subject: [Chevelle-list] A little rant> > > > So, I finally got to REALLY dive into disassembling my car this past > > weekend> > (http://chevelle.karlcore.com/detail.php?id=6)> >> > First, I gotta say that it wasn't until this weekend that I REALLY > > understood what I was missing from my life. "Be the job, great or small; Do it right, or not at all!" I wish I could take credit for that one, but some guy named anonymous wrote it. {I'm certain my teenage son is sick to death from hearing it.} Hopefully, you've found the lion's share of screw ups and can get on with your project without getting too upset. One day, hopefully, you will be able to look back with pride on what you have accomplished. Good luck on your project. Re: [Chevelle-list] A little rant
Hey, the guy who had my 69 El Camino before me bought it for the sole purpose of pulling the running, numbers-matching engine out of it for his '85 Camaro, and then he junked the body. Of course pulling the engine required cutting every wire on both front harnesses. Then of course there was the repair to the rubber fuel line between the sending unit at the tank and the steel line going forward to the engine (patched with electrical tape). That was a nice touch. Believe me, I could go on and on too, but it's so rewarding when you get it all straightened out and running. My car still has some minor Charlie Foxtrots to fix, but it is in good running order now and I drive it almost every day. You'll get there. Take your time and enjoy it.
