Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers suggestions
I have not had a set of headers that I did not HAVE to ding. I have a '65 with a 502 in it, and 2" primaries and had to persuade (with a hammer, and piece of wood) them in. Buy the uncoated, beat em up a bit then have them coated. You do not lose performance by dinging them up. It generally makes the tubes flatter, but does not actually decrease the inside diameter. If you were to drastically bend them, or kink them, only then would you increase the inside diameter of the pipe. So, basically, no matter what you buy, you will probably end up hammering them a bit. On a side note, I also put in 3" exhaust from pypesperformance.com and it is absolutely awesome. I bought the Pypes mufflers, and the X crossover with cutouts. Has a real good throaty sound through the mufflers, but fairly quiet. Not obnoxious like a big block through Flowmasters. I wanted that 'sleeper' sound with good performance, and managed the both.. I would like to install a set of headers and am looking for what fits and works well and what doesn't. Iassume theHooker competitionwill fit, but I'd hate to have to "ding" them to get clearance. Also they are 2" diameter, are they too big for my application? I'll never go nuts withthe engine, but maybe a little more cam, intake and carb in the future. I thought I'd start with headers. Suggestions, thanks for the input. Mark
Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers suggestions
I've run Hooker Comps in the past but won't do so,again. Too many little things I don't like about them. Just my opinion, though. You might check out Hedman or Sanderson for some smaller tube headers for that 396". Hookers will fit the big block just fine. I have 2 inch on mine, no problem. - Original Message - From: To: Chevelle-list@chevelles.net (Chevelle list Post) Sent: 1/17/2005 3:44:56 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Headers suggestions I havea 66 with the stock 396, 325 hp, 4 sp. RE: [Chevelle-list] Headers suggestions
I have 2 Hooker Super Comps on my 71 with no dinging. I hate dings. My motor isnt stock though and I race it. Since you have a stock engine I would suggest you buy the 1 7/8 tube Super Comps. The smaller tube headers provide more bottom end performance and that is what you need most in a stock or slightly modified street engine. Re: [Chevelle-list] Headers suggestions
Mark, I have a 66 with a 4spd and a 454. I have Hooker Super Comp headers, and no dings, and they fit really well. The are pretty close to the steering column, but they dont hit it at all. -Tim
