Diane;
If you are useing can be a good thing. What else are you running for Ignition.  IE   HEI,  MSD unit, MSD distriutor. These are all a factor in what to gap your plugs at.

Thanks for confirming that. I had also heard that the coil voltage could
regulate spark plug gap. I.E. Accel or better means you can go from .035 to
.060, is that true? I've been changing the gap on my 44RT's and have been pretty
happy with .055 using an accel coil. :-Diane

Diane,
Yes, you are correct in what you say about spark plugs. It is
not the motor size that dictates the plug that you should use but the heads that
you are using. For instance, between a World Products (Dart) head and a Brodix
or factory head, they can all use different plugs. It is indeed the depth of the
threads in the head that dictate what plug reach you should use.

Tom,
I'm pretty sure it takes the R44/43XLS (the long treads) the R44S
seems too short. What are you running in your BB?

2003-09-09 Thread Trooper
Thanks Chuck,
I bought a set of R43XLS plugs yesterday so yes they still make them.
My 69 is the flat plug seat. My big concern was the length. The only
difference that I can see between the old AC plugs and the new XLS is
the new ones are threaded all the way up and the old style is only
threaded half way. They will seat at the same depth because the flat
seat stops them from going any deeper.

Tom,
My 69 heads have a flat seat. I also have a set of 70 heads and they
are taper.

I know I am coming into this kinda late, but if it is the 13/16 plug it takes R44's, If it takes the tapered plug, R44T's  You can even use a colder plug which is the R43 or R43T, or a hotter plug R45 or R45T.

Trooper;
I'm just guessing here but isn't the depth of the threads in the head
the decider as to the length of plug? I had heard somewhere that the
plug should protrude very little into the head, and not recessed to far
back up the threads. Someone enlighten us please. ;-Diane

Trooper,

Didn't remember seeing any responses to this one, so I'll give it a shot...

I remember installing the XLS plugs back when the cars were new, and if your
heads are the standard "flat washer" type (not the tapered seat style) these
are the correct [plugs for your '69. If your heads are the original '69
castings, they'll have the standard "flat" plug seats. The tapered seat (or
"peanut") plugs were introduced during the '70 model run... some of the
earliest '70 engines actually used the flat washer style, others used the
tapered seats... even though they both used the same 290 or 291 castings.
Ya just gotta take a look down in the plug opening to tell which ones were
used.

Besides being "correct" for your '69, Trooper, the XLS plugs put the plug
tip in the combustion chamber for improved spark introduction and increased
ignition efficiency. The question now is, can you still get the XLS plugs?
