Thanks for the information Jim. It is setup for coil springs and measures 54 3/8 between backing plates. It appears straight. No drums or brake parts. Re: [Chevelle-list] Rear axle
Jason, can you tell us what plans you have for your car? Obviously a 12 bolt is the best option however they a hard to find. I bought one, cleaned it up and found out the main caps were gone. No way to rebuild it now. So I got p.o'ed and ordered a complete assy from Mosier Engineering. My point is that is you are planning on putting some sub-400 horses in then just about anything will work. But, if you ever have the chance to approach 500 horses or exceed it then put a properly set up 12 bolt in. My 2-cents worth. RE: [Chevelle-list] Rear axle
I would absolutely expect a junkyard to know whether it's a 8.2 or 8.5. I'd say it's their business to know! I would also agree with what others have already said -- unless you're building a stout big-block running on slicks, a decent 8.5 10-bolt shouldwithstand a lot of abuse. Look at most of your 11 and 12 second GN's -- most still have 8.5 10-bolts. You can't go wrong with a 12-bolt, other than price. I have a 12-second small-block powered '70 running slicks and a 12-bolt and I do quite a bit of drag racing. No problems since I put it in back in '94 or '95.I run 3.55 gears on a 2-series carrier with a ring-gear spacer and Moser stock-replacement axles (which are much beef-ier than stock). If you want to run a 3-series gear in a 12-bolt,posi carriers are very hard to find, unless you go aftermarket (Eaton or Auburn, etc). I think I paid $150 for a 12-bolt housing, $180 for gears, $250 for Moser axles, Somewhere between $100-200 for the 2-series carrier and then paid a local mechanic to setup the gears. These prices were 10 years ago. I seem to remember when I was doing mine that the costs were similar to building a 10-bolt versus a 12-bolt.(items such as new ring/pinion, axles, bearing kit, brand-new posi carrier)10-bolts can be attractive if you find a complete unit, in good shape, with a posi and a gear you like ready to bolt-in to the car. I went with the 12-bolt knowing it would take anything that I might throw at it, plus the potential re-sale factor. Some people aren't convinced of the strength of a 10-bolt, but no one will question the strength/durability of a 12-bolt. I guess all I'm saying is, unless you're making more than 500 HP, either should work well, but if you're going to end up spending the same amount of money re-furbishing it, you might as well spend the money on a 12-bolt. -Dave -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of jason mcenteeSent: Thursday, April 22, 2004 11:22 PMTo: The Chevelle Mailing ListSubject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Rear axle I think i will keep looking for the 12 bolt. Did you find an 8.5" 10 bolt? or an 8.2" 10 bolt? It' makes a big difference. The 8.5" 10 bolt is very comparable in strength to the 12 bolt, but the 8.2" definately is not. Re: [Chevelle-list] Rear axle
It's a 95% chance that this 10 bolt is an 8.2 Very few Chevelles got an 8.5. You would need to pull the cover off to meaure the ring gear diameter to see which is it. $200 is a bit high for a 10 bolt. I see those rears for $100 max all over the place. You will spend about $850 rebuilding it if you cannot do it yourself. An 8.2 10 bolt will not hold up to a stout big block. It will, however, take the abuse of a mildly built small block without a problem. Tom

lol.. when I first bagged my 64, I had a popping noise when raising the rear passenger side.. to figure out what was happening...I put the axle tubes on jack stands, laid under the axle, and had my wife raise and lower the car so I could see what was going on.. It wasn't a very good feeling, considering my car does not raise slowly at all... Oh well, at least I figured out where the noise was coming from.. Make a chalk mark on the tire at its lowest point on the ground. Carefully push or drive car one full tire revolution while 2nd person watches the wire tie on the driveshaft and counts the full revs. When the tire has made one full turn, look at the wire tie. How many full turns did it make and where it is now in relation to pointing straight down. Did it make just over 3 turns - could be 3.07 or 3.08; 3 1/4 turns - 3.23, etc. That will get you close to the final ratio with whatever wheels/tires are on the car now. It does work for getting a general idea of what gear is in the rear. Bring both tires off the ground if a posi, I mark the tire on the inside and position this mark straight down. Then mark the drive shaft near the rear u-joint with reference to a stationary point on the axle housing. Slowly turn the marked tire and count the number of drive shaft revolutions to one full tire rotation. ie mine is a 3.73 so when the drive shaft turned 3 and 3/4s that was close enough to prove a 3.73. Krister Meister Bloomingdale, IL '66 SS #'s Fellas.. Is there a good way to determine rear axle ratio without pulling the rear end apart and counting teeth.. Someone told me to turn one of the rear wheels, and see how many times the axle revolves, but that just didn't seem right when I tried it... Any ideas?? Re: [Chevelle-list] rear axle ratio??
Dan, More than likely it is a 3.31. Don't forget that tire size comes into play here. The taller the tire, the lower (numerically) the ratio will turn out. As for highway RPM's, I am turning 3600 RPM at 75 MPH on the highway in my 70. It has 4.10's in it. Some say that's too high for open road, I say that's BS. My car gets 15 MPG at that rate and it runs great, has over 10,000 miles on the motor. Most say to try and keep the RPM's at or lower than 3400 on the higway so you are good to go my friend :-). Tom
Re: [Chevelle-list] rear axle ratio??
Ok guys, thanks for all the feedback... I figured out a good way to do it.. hooked up a tach, had my wife get in front of me in her truck and do 60... I took note of the engine RPM's at that speed... then did the same at 70... doing the math...2900RPM @ 60MPH=3.27gear ratio and 3350RPM @ 70MPH =3.25 gear ratio So, I believe I have a 3.23, per the list from Tom... well, you guys made me recheck my math...instead of finding the tire radius using the standard formula, I went out and measured it instead... Now the numbers work out to 3.08. The taller the tire, the lower (numerically) the ratio will turn out.As for highway RPM's, I am turning 3600 RPM at 75 MPH on the highway in my 70. It has 4.10's in it. Some say that's too high for open road, I say that's BS. My car gets 15 MPG at that rate and it runs great, has over 10,000 miles on the motor. You should try to get a rearend from a '68 to '72, but you can also use a '65 to '67 however they are 1 narrower. -Bob Cunningham On Mon, 27 Aug 2001 07:41:31 -0500 Morris, Jason [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Got a call from my mechanic, it seems that the rear axle bearing in my 69 Elky may have gone dry. RE: [Chevelle-List] Rear axle swap...
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Oil gets into the drum when the seal goes bad. Usually the seal goes bad when the axle bearing goes bad. However, IMO it is highly unlikely that you need a new axle. The only reasons you would need a whole axle is if the bearing was completely frozen and managed to cut a groove in the axle, or if the axle somehow got bent (extremely unlikely unless it's been hit). These bearings and seals are extremely easy to replace. I would recommend either getting a second opinion or trying to do it yourself. If you don't own a slap hammer, you can take the drum off, turn it around, and put it on backwards with enough slack so that the drum can move back and forth a bit to create the slapping action. Just make sure you have caught enough threads on the lug nuts so that the nut won't strip off. For some seals, you need a tool called either a ladyfinger or lady slipper. You can also make one of these out of a toggle bolt from a hardware store (used to hang heavy objects on sheetrock, has a metal butterfly piece that springs out after it's inserted in the hole). You usually have to un-bolt the brake backing plate before you can pull the axle. Some axles have C-clips in the pumpkin, which also have to be removed before you can pull the axle, and should always be replaced with brand new ones. You'll have to take it to an auto parts store that does light machine work to have the old bearing pressed off and the new one pressed on. If you get a service manual, the whole procedure should be in there. It should take you about a half hour tops. You probably should do both sides, especially because the car is new to you and you don't know when the other was replaced last. Usually if one is old the other is too, although some people only replace one at a time to save a few dollars. As far as this being a common problem, it is the natural result of wear on a moving part. It is not unusual. I also have a 69 El Camino, but haven't touched the rear yet, so unfortunately I don't know the exact setup. If you live near me (NYC or Long Island area), I'd be willing to stop by and show you how to do it, unless you need it done immediately. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List I was refering to the axle. But yes, no point in going in without replacing both the bearing seal. rick On Mon, 27 Aug 2001 10:31:13 -0400 John Nasta [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Sorry Richard, but this is incomplete advice. He should replace both the bearing and the seal. Usually if the seal is bad the bearing is too. When the bearing is bad, the weight of the car puts excessive pressure on one side of the seal. Some times the metal part of the seal just outside the rubber area will even go out of round because the axle is no longer centered in the seal. This is why it leaks. You don't get a good seal when the axle is not centered in the hole. If he just replaces the seal, it will probably just get wiped out again. This is a cheap and easy job to do, and there's no reason to do it half way. -Original Message- Unless the axle shaft is boogered up, no need to replace it. Just replace the seal. - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Title: RE: [Chevelle-List] Rear axle swap... Thanks for the info Rick, I don't know the damage yet but my mechanic told me that if the axle was pitted or grooved, I would need a new one. I'll ask him about that axle saver, that could save some $. BTW, this is going to be a daily driver, so the axle saver mite be good enough for me. Unless the axle shaft is boogered up, no need to replace it. Just replace the seal. Any 68-72 Chevelle, el camino or Monte Carlo axle should work, EXCEPT I believe that there is a difference between 10 12 bolt rear axles. Get the correct one. Are you redoing the el camino as a daily driver or racer? IF its only gonna see a very mild motor, you can have him install Axle saver bearings . The axle usually gets boogered at the bearing, the axle saver moves the bearing race outboard a bit to a good axle surface. Replacing the axle for this type problem is relatively common, someone did create the axle saver for that problem. rick - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
