Dale,

You have PS in your 67 SS? I won't have PS in my 66 and I'm curious how
difficult it will be to turn in parking lots and tight places with a smaller
than stock wheel.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Steering Wheel

2006-03-26 Thread Dale
I had P/S in the SS and have it in the Elky as well. I drove the SS for a
couple of years with no pump and the hoses off. Wasn't that difficult with
the large stock steering wheel but P/S was hooked back up long before the
smaller wheel was used. With a smaller wheel, it'd be a chore to parallel
park, no doubt.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Steering wheel/column question

2006-01-09 Thread Danny Wilsher
John, the pitman arm has a slot in it so it will only go on one way and
it can't be changed there. The alignment on the front end can be perfect in
all aspects but what has to happen is the tie rod sleeves have to be turned
an equal amount on both sides to get the steering wheel to line up where you
want it. If this is done right, it will not interfere with the front end
alignment in any way. I just the other day had to do this to my son's 05
F150 after he went through a ditch a little too fast. (what he said anyway)
It messed up the alignment and the wheel was nearly 45 degrees off. Turned
the sleeves and straightened it right up.

I double checked my records, and I was off 1/4 of a turn, since the
steering wheel was off 90 degrees. I had 3 and 1/4 turn to the right,
and 3 and 3/4 turns to the left. Once I had the alignment fixed, the
steering wheel was straight, and I had 3 and 1/2 turns to each side,
stop-to-stop from center.

John,

With the position your steering wheel is currently in, do your turn

signals

cancel properly following a turn? If they do, you can reorient the wheel

if

it's not off too much, but if it's way off, when you r&r it to the new
position, the turn signal cancel function might not work properly, if at
all. With out sitting in front of a column with the wheel off I can't
explain it exactly, but when you get in there you'll see what I'm talking
about. Usually when the steering wheel isn't centered properly, it can be
fixed during the alignment - provided it's already installed correctly.

My steering wheel is not oriented properly. With the wheels in proper

degrees off (counterclockwise from where it should be). Should I...

a) Remove the steering wheel & hub and put the hub back on in a

different

orientation. Is that possible or is there a keyway or spline so that the
hub
only goes on one way?

b) Take apart the rag joint and re-orient the yoke going into the

steering

box. Again I don't know if that's possible for the same reasons.

I'm sure there is a straightforward way to get my steering wheel

straight.

Also, does anybody know the thread size of the Flasher knob or where I

can

get one such knob? It should be the same for all 69-72. Mine is broken
off.

2006-01-09 Thread Tom Tomlinson
My '71 came with an aftermarket steering wheel that was oriented
properly. When I replaced it with a true '71 steering wheel, the wheel
was 90 degrees off when the wheels were pointed straight because it was
keyed. I also had 1/2 a turn less steerage in one direction than the
other. The only way to fix it was to re-align the car.

Thanks. I have an Oldsmobile 4-spoke sport wheel, which I'm pretty sure is
not original to the car ;) It was probably just put on wrong. It mounts to
the same type of hub as the Chevelle sport wheels.

John,

With the position your steering wheel is currently in, do your turn signals
cancel properly following a turn? If they do, you can reorient the wheel if
it's not off too much, but if it's way off, when you r&r it to the new
position, the turn signal cancel function might not work properly, if at
all. With out sitting in front of a column with the wheel off I can't
explain it exactly, but when you get in there you'll see what I'm talking
about. Usually when the steering wheel isn't centered properly, it can be
fixed during the alignment - provided it's already installed correctly.

Do this to get it close, then it can be fine tuned by adjusting the

My steering wheel is not oriented properly. With the wheels in proper
alignment and turned straight, the steering wheel is probably about 75
degrees off (counterclockwise from where it should be). Should I...

a) Remove the steering wheel & hub and put the hub back on in a different
orientation. Is that possible or is there a keyway or spline so that the
hub

only goes on one way?

b) Take apart the rag joint and re-orient the yoke going into the steering

RE: [Chevelle-list] STEERING WHEEL

2005-04-23 Thread John Nasta

According
to Gary from Gary's Steering Wheel restoration, a really important thing is to
use the right filler if you have any cracks. Most of them will look fine for
the first year and then crack again when the substrate expands and contracts at
a different rate than the filler. Gary says he has worked out a good plastic mixture
that will approximate the modulus of elasticity of the original wheel better
than straight Bondo, epoxy, or urethane. Of course he doesn't go around giving
out his "secret formula".

You can do it yourself with a kit Eastwood

Make

Try Gary's Steering Wheel Restoration
(http://www.dealsonwheels.com/parts/garys/). It is not cheap, but he is said
to be one of the best. The main thing about Gary is that he uses a plastic
filler instead of epoxy, so it expands & contracts at a similar rate to the
original plastic and is therefore less likely to crack.

John,
I think it will, you just have to make sure the columb and the steering
shaft are the same. In my assembly manual there are about 4 different
columbs. The best idea is to take the wheel off and compare the
shafts/columbs.
