MY 70 SS396 CHEVELLEHAS A IDIOT LIGHT DASH AND THE CLOCK HAS STOPPED WORKING. I WANT TO REPLACE CLOCK AND CONVERT TO GAUGES. WITH SO MANY VENDORS OFFERING KITS AND GAUGES, HAS ANYONE GOT ANY INPUT(POS OR NEG) OR EXPERIANCE REGARDING VENDOR, RELIABILITY, QUALITY OR PREFERENCE OF ANY OF THE KITS AND GAUGES OUT THERE? THANKS.

Great question. I have been pondering the same question. My problem is that I
have a gauge kit (that came in the trunk of the car when I baught it)but I
don't know if it works. My dilema is whether to install the untested gauge kit
and switch wiring harnesses or just get the idiot light to guage conversion and
use the harness already in the car. Either way, its going to cost some
moneydamn.

The other bummer of it iswhy didn't GM have an oil pressure gauge in 70? I
think this is probably the most important thing to watch. Does anybody make a
gauge conversion kit that has a stock looking oil pressure gauge. I'd rather
have that than a stupid clock.
Sorry for the rant, I'm just perplexed.

In my factory gauged 72 El Camino I pulled the inst cluster and sent it
off and had it completely re-done, including switching the clock over to
quartz, this was pretty straight forward. Just had a slight problem
hooking the amp gauge up to the late model alternator. Have a after
market oil pressure gauge under dash. Do not like this set up. So on
the 1972 Monte Carlo which was a idiot light setup I purchased a 1972
factory gauge cluster, wiring harness from MH Wiring, and sent the
cluster off had it re-done and a volt meter installed, clock over to
quartz. Installed it with no problem with wiring, got a Auto Meter oil
pressure gauge and sending unit and a pillar pod to put the gauge in,
this I really like. If you would like a picture contact me off list.
