Re: [Chevelle-list] trunk pans
I believe it's a Goodmark piece. GroundUp carries it and maybe John can get it for you also. I get all my sheetmetal from a local source that carries most all the manufactures. He's going to get it for me but I trust his judgment and he has a 100% guarantee so I usually don't worry who the manufacture is with him. I like the fact that there is no shipping and I can take it right back if I don't like it. I've purchased Goodmark, DII, Golden Legion, Genuine GM. I've had fitment from great to terrible and no one manufacture stands out as better than the other to me except genuine GM replacements (and I've had to tweak a couple of their full quarters). With that said, if they all make/sell it, I usually buy DII because it's cheaper. No other reason. Ask me in about 6 months and I'll tell you how this one fits :) One and two take precise cutting and a ton of butt welding. They also do not fit the grooves in the trunk perfect so take some fabbing. Re: [Chevelle-list] trunk pans
Hi Bill, In my 5 years in the business, there has only been one time a piece of sheet metal has ever been returned because the customer was a body shop professional and he said it just didn't fit right. It was a Goodmark hood and the customer had opted to pay the extra money because it was from Goodmark. The Goodmark people replaced it with other merchandise (he said he didn’t want another one of their hoods), and the guy got a DII hood, which he said fit fine. I have used DII panels on my own car and have sold them for 5 years without anybody ever saying that they didn’t fit. For years Goodmark sold DII panels and simply charged more for them, and people thought that they must have been different or better because they cost more. Now Goodmark claims that they don’t buy from DII any more. That may be true but I'll bet it's a fancy way of saying that they still have their panels stamped at the same place that DII does, and they found a way to get around DII. The fact is that there aren’t a long list of places that are ultimately stamping any of this stuff. It just always bugs me when people assume that because Goodmark charges more, their stuff is better. Most of it is exactly the same stuff you would get from another vendor. The one piece pan is nice if you are also putting new quarter panels on the car. The problem is; you can't get the one piece pan into the car through the trunk opening with both quarters in place. It's been about 6 years or so since I did my 71. I bought a 3 piece set from Ausleys. Since then I've done a 69 for a friend and we found National Parts Depot to be reasonable. Regardless of where you buy it, I have found that anything labeled Goodmark is worth the extra money simply for the difference in fit and finish. Ronnie, The three piece is actually a little easier to install but you have the extra seams to deal with. Neither is easy. Re: [Chevelle-List] Trunk pans 1970 (diff. than Chips)
I found plumbers putty works great. Stays soft and holds. Any hardware store has it.I have also used it to seal the kick panel vents and the heater inside. On the plugs, some were screwed in place along with the sealer. My Nova was like that. I guess you could use small sheet metal screws for added insurance if you wanted.
