Re: [Chevelle-list] trunk pans

2006-06-27 Thread Trooper

I believe it's a Goodmark piece. GroundUp carries
it and maybe John can get it for you also. I get all my sheetmetal from a local
source that carries most all the manufactures. He's going to get it for me
but I trust his judgment and he has a 100% guarantee so I usually
don't worry who the manufacture is with him. I like the fact that
there is no shipping and I can take it right back if I don't like
it.

I've purchased Goodmark, DII, Golden Legion,
Genuine GM. I've had fitment from great to terrible and no one manufacture
stands out as better than the other to me except genuine GM replacements (and
I've had to tweak a couple of their full quarters). With that said, if they all
make/sell it, I usually buy DII because it's cheaper. No other
reason.

There are actually 3 different one piece
trunks. One covers the center section to about 8 inches from the trunk
extensions. Number 2 covers the same but goes to about 3 inches from the
extensions. Both of these will fit through the trunk opening. I have
installed the larger one myself through the trunk opening. The third one is
new and is the entire trunk all the way up to the back of the back seat and
all the way to the extensions. It also has the braces already welded on.
This one must be installed from under the car. Ask me in about 6 months and
I'll tell you how this one fits :) One and two take precise cutting and a
ton of butt welding. They also do not fit the grooves in the trunk perfect
so take some fabbing.

2006-06-27 Thread John Nasta

Hi Bill,

In my 5 years in the business, there has only been one time
a piece of sheet metal has ever been returned because the customer was a body
shop professional and he said it just didn't fit right. It was a Goodmark hood
and the customer had opted to pay the extra money because it was from Goodmark.
The Goodmark people replaced it with other merchandise (he said he didn’t want
another one of their hoods), and the guy got a DII hood, which he said fit
fine. I have used DII panels on my own car and have sold them for 5 years
without anybody ever saying that they didn’t fit. For years Goodmark sold DII
panels and simply charged more for them, and people thought that they must have
been different or better because they cost more. Now Goodmark claims that they don’t
buy from DII any more. That may be true but I'll bet it's a fancy way of saying
that they still have their panels stamped at the same place that DII does, and
they found a way to get around DII. The fact is that there aren’t a long list
of places that are ultimately stamping any of this stuff. It just always bugs
me when people assume that because Goodmark charges more, their stuff is
better. Most of it is exactly the same stuff you would get from another vendor.

I've

if you have to put a couple extra hours into making something fit, it is
actually more expensive. That is, unless your time isn't worth anything to you.
I've bought some "other" sheet metal parts that I swear the die was
worn out about 30,000 panels before they made mine.

If you
know of something equivalent or better, tell us about it.

I've

The one piece pan is nice if you are also putting
new quarter panels on the car. The problem is; you can't get the one piece pan
into the car through the trunk opening with both quarters in place.

It's been about 6 years or so since I did my 71. I
bought a 3 piece set from Ausleys. Since then I've done a 69 for a friend and we
found National Parts Depot to be reasonable.

Regardless of where you buy it, I have found that
anything labeled Goodmark is worth the extra money simply for the difference in
fit and finish.

I found plumbers putty works great. Stays soft and holds. Any hardware store
has it.I have also used it to seal the kick panel vents and the heater
inside. On the plugs, some were screwed in place along with the sealer. My
Nova was like that. I guess you could use small sheet metal screws for added
insurance if you wanted.

I also have a question about trunk pans too. On my '70 there are those ,I
guess you would call them, plugs in the floor and the previous owner remove
one of them. Where do you get thos and how would you put them in?

We carry the trunk floor pans & related braces, and can offer a good deal,
especially if you need a few pieces.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Trunk pans Where?

Where is the best place to get trunk pans for my 65? Is the quality all the
same when it comes to this and I guess I'm looking for the best price for a
quality piece.

Thanks Chip
