That's correct; the smugglers box is not 
big enough for the spare tire. But it is just big enough for the battery, 
Airride tank and compressor, and a bottle of nitrous :)

John, the spare tire goes behind the
passenger seat on a 68-72.  That compartment is no where near big enough for a

So, are you guys saying that this came
standard on El Caminos from 64-67, or are you saying that this is a popular
conversion? I know that my 69 is not set up that way.

I have to agree, my '64 is in the bed about a foot from the back 
window.  A cover comes off and is a compartment in there.  About a 
foot wide foot deep and full across the width of the bed.   I am sure 
someone has a photo.

I always thought the smuggler's box was the area 
of the bed that is the rear floorboard in a wagon.  It's covered to become 
part of the bed in an El Camino.
