Dear Mr Finlayson,

Many thanks for your trouble.

I now know it was 1911-1999, but it is useful to know that you have access
to the ODNB.

Best wishes,

Dear Professor Capet

I checked the ODNB and unfortunately he's not listed. I believe he worked
with WSC on his books, but can you tell me anything more about him? If I had
a few more clues I'm happy to keep digging!

[ChurchillChat] Re: The pint (of champagne) pleases everyone

2021-12-25 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

Seen in the Daily Express online today :

'Bring back our pint' Brexit Britain looking at reinstating Churchill
favourite EU stopped
THE UK Government is considering reinstating a previous favourite of wartime
Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Pint-sized sparkling wine bottles may return to the UK as the country
continues to free itself of unwanted EU legislation which has stuck around
post-Brexit. The Government is thinking of ending a ban that was introduced
after Britain joined what went on to become the European Union in 1973.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is continuing a review of EU laws that have
remained on the UK's statute book post-Brexit.

An end to the ban is perhaps something Churchill himself would himself have
welcomed.

He hailed the pint bottle of champagne as the "ideal size", describing it as
"enough for two at lunch and one at dinner".

The wartime leader once said that his wife, Clemmie, thought that a full
bottle was too much for him, but he knew half a bottle was insufficient to
tease his brains.

He remarked that the compromise of the pint "pleases everyone, even the
producer".

NB : The pint in question is the 56-cl Imperial pint (1/8 of a gallon) not
the smaller US pint.

[ChurchillChat] Re: A new film on Munich is announced

2021-12-15 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear all,

A new film on Munich is announced :

‘Chamberlain was a great man’: why has the PM fooled by Hitler been recast
as a hero in new film Munich?
‘He fails, but there’s something noble in the attempt’ … Jeremy Irons as
Neville Chamberlain in Munich: The Edge of War.

He is seen as the appeaser who fell for Hitler’s lies. But was Chamberlain
scapegoated? Writer Robert Harris and actor Jeremy Irons discuss taking on
history with their controversial new film

. . . Among those who benefited from the vilification of Chamberlain was his
rival, Winston Churchill. He doesn’t appear in Munich, but in a sense the
whole movie is a riposte to his version of history. “I don’t seek to
denigrate Churchill in any way,” says Harris. “He clearly was a brilliant
war leader and an inspiring person. But he certainly went out to denigrate
Chamberlain, and his memoirs really are a great counterfactual. ‘If only
that, if only this – then Hitler could have been stopped.’ None of it seems
to really address the things Chamberlain had to deal with. And if we’d
followed Churchill’s advice, the army would have bought a lot of biplanes.”
. . .

Dear All,

A new book which is bound to have substantial Churchill content :

When France Fell: The Vichy Crisis and the Fate of the Anglo-American
Alliance

by Michael S. Neiberg | Oct 29, 2021

“An utterly gripping account, the best to date, of relations within the
turbulent triumvirate of France, Britain, and America in the Second World
War. Neiberg vividly brings to life the extraordinary military, domestic,
personal, and political pressures on giants such as Franklin Roosevelt,
Winston Churchill, and Charles de Gaulle, while also showing the immediate
practical effect their interactions had on ordinary people in the struggle
against the Nazis.”

[ChurchillChat] Churchill in the Journal of Transatlantic Studies

2021-09-10 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat
For List Members who have access to the Journal of Transatlantic Studies
through their librairies, three recent articles of interest (with abstracts) :

1)
  Author:
 Jespersen, T. Christopher

  Title:
China in Anglo-American relations: the Cairo Conference, November 22–26
and December 2–7, 1943

  Journal:
 Journal of Transatlantic Studies, 18 - 1 Date: 2020 Pages: 1-18

  https://doi.org/10.1057/s42738-019-00038-6

China’s participation in the Cairo Conference in late November and early
December 1943 served as a highwater mark for China’s diplomatic standing during
World War Two. Spurred by President Roosevelt’s wish to elevate China and
Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek’s international standing to one of the “Big
Four” allies along with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet
leader Joseph Stalin, Chiang sought to make the most of his first, and only,
appearance on the international war-time stage by pressing for China’s
interests to be addressed. Assisted by American General Joseph Stilwell, Chiang
pushed for the Americans and British to commit to a major military operation in
Burma in addition to a long list of requests. However much Roosevelt wished to
honor the Chinese requests, he came up against British resistance, and
although, by this time, the Americans were contributing far more to the
fighting of the war, the relationship between Roosevelt and Churchill, between
the Americans and the British, took precedence over any and all Chinese needs.
Cairo may have marked the peak of China’s international influence during the
war, but it failed to overcome the far greater bond that connected the USA and
Great Britain.

2)
  Author:
 Ryan, David

  Title:
Memory: Churchill and the US lures of the quagmire

  Journal:
 Journal of Transatlantic Studies, 18 - 4 Date: 2020 Pages: 477-497

  https://doi.org/10.1057/s42738-020-00057-8

‘Churchill’ has been used as a powerful lure in US collective memory on
questions of military intervention and defiance. While the history of Winston
Churchill is extensive and complicated the image of him in US collective memory
has been reduced to a narrower image and understanding of him set around
resolution, defiance, individual heroism as an antidote to the discourses and
memories of appeasement. US presidents have a proclivity to reach for a
memorable phrase or quotation from Churchill when considering questions of
defiance and intervention. While the common aphorism suggests that lessons from
the past that are unlearned will be repeated, it does not engage the issue of
memory. Collective memory, as opposed to history, provides a consciousness that
can be used by speechwriters and presidents to galvanise, define and motivate
public opinion under particular circumstances.

3)
  Author:
 Cross, Graham

  Title:
‘Command of the air’: Alfred T. Mahan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston S.
Churchill and an Anglo-American personal diplomacy of air power

  Journal:
 Journal of Transatlantic Studies, 19 - 1 Date: 2021 Pages: 27-53

  https://doi.org/10.1057/s42738-020-00063-w

Explanations of the importance of Allied air power during World War II often
look to the supporting military theorists such as Gen. William L. Mitchell and
Marshal Hugh Trenchard to explain the rhetoric, if not the reality, of the air
campaign. These theorists and their military acolytes undoubtedly had a
significant impact on the deployment of air power, but they had much less to
say on its use as a diplomatic tool. Study of both Franklin D. Roosevelt and
Winston S. Churchill demonstrates that they had a sophisticated appreciation of
how to use air power to achieve their foreign policy goals within the realm of
personal diplomacy. For both Roosevelt and Churchill, the origin of this
appreciation lay in their early experiences of political office and
particularly in their exposure to the work of naval strategist Capt. Alfred T.
Mahan. As wartime national leaders, both came to share a discourse of personal
air power diplomacy acting to simultaneously refine, challenge and reinforce
each other’s conceptions. Viewed in this light, clear Anglo-American fields of
cooperation in deterrence, coercion, persuasion and moral diplomacy emerge.
Closer examination of this Anglo-American discourse and exchange adds to our
understanding of the role of personal air power diplomacy at the national level
in this era. It also brings into relief both the consensus and tensions
surrounding air power within the Anglo-American wartime alliance. Ultimately,
it suggests that there was a good deal of continuity in the personal air power
diplomacy of both leaders as they strove to integrate atomic weapons into their
calculations and confronted the developing Cold War.

[ChurchillChat] Re: Winston Churchill: His Times, His Crimes

2021-07-18 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

Seen by chance on Amazon UK today :

Winston Churchill: His Times, His Crimes
Hardcover – 3 May 2022
by Tariq Ali (Author)

The subject of numerous biographies and history books, Winston Churchill has
been repeatedly voted as one of the greatest of Englishmen. Even today,
Boris Johnson in his failing attempts to be magisterial, has adopted many of
his hero's mannerism! And, as Tariq Ali agrees, Churchill was undoubtedly
right in 1940-41 to refuse to capitulate to fascism. However, he was also
one of the staunchest defenders of empire and of Britain's imperial
doctrine. In this coruscating biography, Tariq Ali challenges Churchill's
vaulted record. Throughout his long career as journalist, adventurer, MP,
military leader, statesman, and historian, nationalist self belief
influenced Churchill's every step, with catastrophic effects. As a young man
he rode into battle in South Africa, Sudan and India in order to maintain
the Imperial order. As a minister during the first World War, he was
responsible for a series of calamitous errors that cost thousands of lives.
His attempt to crush the Irish nationalists left scars that have not yet
healed. Despite his record as a defender of his homeland during the Second
World War, he was willing to sacrifice more distant domains. Singapore fell
due to his hubris. Over 3 Millions Bengalis starved in 1943 as a consequence
of his policies. As a peace time leader, even as the Empire was starting to
crumble, Churchill never questioned his imperial philosophy as he became one
of the architects of the postwar world we live in today.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Winston-Churchill-His-Times-Crimes/dp/1788735773/ref=sr_1_25?Adv-Srch-Books-Submit.x=78&Adv-Srch-Books-Submit.y=9&__mk_en_GB=%C3%85M%C3%85Z%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&field-datemod=5&field-dateop=After&field-dateyear=2021&qid=1626625696&rnid=271343&s=books&sr=1-25&unfiltered=1

Older British List Members will remember Tariq Ali's fame as a radical
student activist in the 1960s.

Others can look at his biography on Wikipedia :

Dear All,

I am continuing with my English version of my Dictionnaire Churchill.

I am now tackling "Churchill and 'Europe' ", and I stumble upon a difficulty
which I had not spotted when preparing the French edition :

Did his speech in Metz take place on 14 or 15 July 1946 ?

His collection of speeches for 1946, _The Sinews of War_ says 14 (p.171) -
so does RR James in his Complete Speeches (p. 7357), probably culled from
_The Sinews of War_, however.

But the OB reads : "Churchill spoke, first in Luxembourg on July 14, and on
the following day in Metz".

Following the highly publicised recent sale of Churchill’s wartime picture
of Marrakech offered to President Roosevelt, I wonder if anyone knows what
has become of another gift to the President as reported in Pawle’s _The War

had had magnificently bound in red leather by the London firm of Sangorski

Dear Mr Smith,

Many thanks for the link to this very informative review.

I was intrigued by a passage :

' As a cousin of Winston observed at the time: “Few fathers have done less

I googled the quote, but only got the Wall Street Journal reference.

Who is that cousin (Clare Sheridan ?) Where is the source of the quote, I
wonder ?

Subject: [ChurchillChat] Churchill and the 1911 Boxing Ban

Dear Antoine,
(New thread for a new subject.)
With your usual perspicacity, you zero in on the one new item in this latest
eruption from the fever swamps: Churchill banned interracial boxing matches.
The Empire Strikes Back!

Unwilling to give out my email or pay to download the Guardian-linked
article, "British Boxing's Colour Bar" by Neil Carter, I searched and found
it here: https://bit.ly/3rYvvMQ
Ignore all the ads and come-ons and just read Carter's piece, which you'll
eventually see after X-ing out all the pop-ups:

Carter's article is perfectly straightforward and scarcely mentions
Churchill. The effrontery expressed in the Guardian over the 1911 ban on
white-black boxing sounds like what William Manchester called "Generational
Chauvinism." Outrage over what was common injustice a century ago.

Nowhere (except in the Guardian article) does Churchill say "white fighters
would not be seen losing to black ones." Nowhere is he quoted saying "that
Britain and the US shared 'Anglo-Saxon superiority.'" Nowhere in fact, on
the boxing ban, is he quoted as saying anything. Is WSC being boxed into
another corner? Hmm.

Lusstige Blatter, Berlin, 1940

This bears further research: first to establish that the matter actually got
to his desk; second, what if anything he said about it. But if you read Lord
Stanhope's objections (Carter's article) they seem to have had more to do
with discouraging white/black violence than assertions of racial
inferiority. You read it and tell me!

The 7th Earl of Stanhope (1880-1967) was a Conservative politician whom WSC
succeeded as First Lord of the Admiralty in 1939. I could find nothing about
his involvement in the pugilistic debates of 1911: https://bit.ly/3vGdiWk
I have checked the online Churchill Archives without success but have asked
for help from the Archives Centre.

An unexpurgated version is being published in two volumes.

Re: [ChurchillChat] Sale of "The Tower of Koutoubia Mosque" to a Belgian buyer

2021-03-03 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear Lee,

Many thanks for this magnificently informative message.

First : WOW ! - for the picture with you. When you write " That might have
been the last time it was seen in public before this sale" one could add "
and possibly after this sale" . . .

Re you point 5, here is what The Art Newpaper writes :

This evening, Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque sold to a bidder on the phone
with Christie's Surrealism specialist Olivier Camu, who was spending big on
Churchill—auctioneer Jussi Pylkkänen referred to the bidder as being from
Belgium (Camu is also Belgian-born).

Subject: [ChurchillChat] Sale of "The Tower of Koutoubia Mosque"

As someone who is familiar with this painting (see attached photo of me with
it some years ago), I can offer the following information:

1. It is Lot No. 9 which begins just before the 57:00 mark on the video.

2. Ms. Jolie purchased it in 2011 for just over $2,000,000 so assuming some
seller's commission was paid, her investment multiplied about 4.50 times.
That is impressive but note that the US stock market (with less risk and
full liquidity) went up about 3.25 times over the same period while paying
cash dividends. (Hers was having the painting to look at every day.)

3. While the price is far higher than any previous Churchill sale, the
auction house estimates for these have been very low and the uniqueness of
this picture make the price less shocking. Nevertheless, the price of the
three of the Churchills that were sold will pull up the value of all the
other ones.

4. The goal of having it available for public display was admirable but it
was not realistic to expect institutions such as the FDR Library or the
Smithsonian either buy it themselves or have a supporter do so for them.
Their resources are constrained and they prefer to use their donors for
their own internal projects.

Of anyone, Hillsdale College might have had the greatest likelihood (and
perhaps was even bidding), given its $750 million endowment, prodigious
fundraising abilities and devotion to Churchill. The college has a wonderful
statue of Churchill and this picture would have been a jewel on the campus.
While Churchill is recognized there, FDR is not and it would have been a
nice way to acknowledge his importance in American history. His expansion
of the Federal government and reimagining of its role (mistakenly cast by
some today as a harmful "administrative state") was a necessary precursor to
America's role in the Second World War and the FDR-Churchill alliance.

But even so, at $11 million+, that might have been too much to expect of
them or any other nonprofit institution.

5. I'm not sure how Todd determined the buyer was Belgian. The winning bid
was put in by Olivier Camu, a Sotheby's Vice Chairman, acting on behalf of a
client. In watching the video, I did not hear any mention of Belgium so if
someone else did, please let us know.

6. While a Belgian bidder is surprising, there are plenty of rich people in
that country and perhaps one is enough of a Churchillian to buy all three of
these lots. But I wouldn't obsess or fantasize too much about the paintings
ending up in the Geneva Freeport or some other mysterious hideaway. Private
collectors who have the means to buy at these prices are likely to have
multiple homes and I expect it will end up in someone's living room.

7. But if we're lucky, the identity of the buyer might surface and perhaps
they'll lend it to a future Churchill painting exhibit. When it was sold to
Ms. Jolie in 2011, she wasn't identified and it took me some educated
guesswork that she might be the buyer; fortunately I knew someone who has
advised Brad Pitt on military aspects of his films and that person
approached them on our behalf. They were very courteous and granted our
request to lend it to the painting exhibit at the Millennium Gate Museum in
Atlanta a few years later. That might have been the last time it was seen
in public before this sale.

8. Everyone in the Churchill world is anxious to know who acquired it this
time as we all want to solicit that person to support our various worthy
projects. We'll see if anyone finds out...

I hope the above is helpful.

Thanks.

Dear Richard,

From what I gather from Todd Milligan's message, the picture(s) went to a
Belgian. How odd ! There are many more billionaires, I should think, in
oil-rich Texas (let alone the USA) than in little Belgium with its ruined
iron and coal industry. Why the picture did not stay in the USA, where it
belongs, escapes me. (And I say that as a convinced European !)

Perhaps we will know one day ...

Todd Milligan writes: I must confess I was very nervous watching the auction
unfold on YouTube, where it can be seen:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GXGb87G2y_Q

To see the bidding war start between 11 initial bidders dwindle to the final
two, one from Belgium and one from Texas, was nerve wracking. Little hope
held out that the US bidder might have thought to bring it to one of the
museums stateside were dashed (in my opinion) when Paddle 860 not only won
the first work for auction but continued the same success by winning the
'star' of the show and the last, thereby claiming all three WSC paintings on
sale. Because Belgium has such high tax rates, it can now be assumed they
will end up in Geneva Freeport. One can only guess the Texas bidder was
disappointed, like the rest of us.

What's interesting is that I wrote down last week what I thought it would
sell for, considering the significance of it compared to 'Goldfish Pond'
which had the previous $2.8million record. My guess was $10million USD! If
only money was somewhat plentiful, I would have run the gamut and paid the
price ensuring it returned where it belongs. Sadly the chance I feel now is
gone. Thank you so much for spending the time to find a successful buyer. We
did our best!

Dear All,

I was surprised to hear of the auction only today, "after the battle" - I
did not see anything about it in advance in the usual Churchillian sources
of information, the more so as it is the famous wartime painting given to
President Roosevelt.

Anyway, here is the result :

A painting by Sir Winston Churchill and owned by Angelina Jolie has been
sold for £8.285m.

Details on the Skynews site :

My conclusion is that any brand of whatever product can claim that it was

In the absence of evidence in the literature, one had better take these

[ChurchillChat] ‘Whiteballed’: Randolph Churchill, The Conservative Union and the Liverpool Conservative Party, 1935

2020-12-18 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

In connection with my work for the Royal Historical Society Bibliography,
just seen an article of interest to Churchillians who have access to the
journal _Northern History_ through their libraries:

Author: Nuttall, Paul A.
Title: ‘Whiteballed’: Randolph Churchill, The Conservative Union and the
Liverpool Conservative Party, 1935

Journal: Northern History, 57 - 2 Date: 2020 Pages: 250-269
DOI: 10.1080/0078172X.2020.1748356
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0078172X.2020.1748356

Abstract : In January 1935, Randolph Churchill, the son of Winston,
announced that he intended to stand in a by-election in what was considered
the safe Tory seat of Liverpool Wavertree. Churchill, however, was not the
official Conservative Party candidate: he was an ‘Independent Conservative’
standing on a platform of opposition to the Government of India Bill and the
need for a larger air force. His campaign morphed into a crusade against the
Liverpool Conservative Party and in particular its leader, Sir Thomas White.
The Liverpool Conservative Party had, through a series of local ‘bosses’,
controlled the city for a generation. During the inter-war period questions
were raised about its methods, including overbearing caucus management and a
pandering to sectarianism. Churchill’s campaign, which lasted between March
and November 1935, brought these issues to the fore. In eleven eventful
months, Churchill stood in two parliamentary elections, attempted to
overthrow the central organisation, lost a libel case and alienated almost
everyone in the city. Churchill claimed that the rejection of his campaign
by the Liverpool Conservative Party amounted to him being ‘whiteballed’ – a
reference to the local leader. This article is the first time these events
have been covered in significant detail.

Re: [ChurchillChat] Re: portrait of Lady Churchill by John Napper (1954)

2020-06-25 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear Richard,

Many thanks for your trrouble. And of course many thanks to Katherine Carter
for immediately providing this rare and extremely informative link.

I looked at the video, naturally (I seemed to recognise Diana on the left of
the platform).

It seems incredible that the location of the portrait should remain unknown
today, and also that none of the major Churchill books except David A.
Thomas's Churchill : The Member for Woodford should mention it except as in
an allusive manner.

OB VIII only says 'On November 23 Churchill spoke at Woodford at the
presentation of a portrait of his wife.' (p.1070).

It is also odd that there should be no image of it, however reduced or
re-framed, on Google. All the more puzzling since, as you say "I think it
was much too good to meet the fate of the dreadful Sutherland".

Is there something which cannot be said or shown about this portrait, I
wonder ? Mary's silence in her magnificent biography of her mother would
suggest something like that. Unfortunately, we can no longer ask her . . .

Any clue welcome !

Best wishes to all,

A.C.

Antoine,
I asked Katherine Carter at Chartwell writes:
"Yes I know the portrait - it's the one that features in this video

Sadly I do not know where it can be found today, it is not one of the
portraits of Lady Churchill that we have at Chartwell."

I think it was much too good to meet the fate of the dreadful Sutherland

As a nice change from toppled or defaced statues :

Unusually The Observer (Sunday version of the Guardian) has an editorial

"Fine" article? I don't think so. The British reality in 1940 was complex
and horrendous; nevertheless, there was an underlying "Blitz Spirit":
Britain and its capital city came through: there was no folding up, as
happened elsewhere, Antoine. A word of advice to you: don't look for

Dear All,

I received my copy of the final volume in The Churchill Documents (# 23) this
morning.

When I first started to get interested in the OB, the ‘Companions’ stopped with
vol. V, in 1939, and I never thought I would see the completion of the series :
we can all congratulate the Hillsdale team for its dedication and efficiency.
A stupendous achievement !

Now that I have the complete series, I have been able to update the recap which
I sent some time ago. See below.

I hope it will be helpful.

[ChurchillChat] Re: "spelling . . . altered in accordance with modern malpractice.”

2019-12-28 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

I am reading the superb vol. 22 (1945-1951) of The Churchill Documents from
end to end, looking for references to Churchill’s views and pronouncements
on “Europe” during that period (with plenty of fresh material found so far,
incidentally), and I chanced upon a passage in a letter which led me to
another subject.

Writing about the proofs of one of the volumes of The Second World War, he
says :

“Neither do I want my particular spelling of Tsar, etc., to be altered in
accordance with modern malpractice.” (p. 1175)

This set me thinking about other examples of “modern malpractice” which he
deprecated, and on reflection the only one that came to mind was Angora /
Ankara (in part because of the cat, as we know).

Total changes of name, like Constantinople / Istanbul, are a different
story.

No doubt List Members can add to this embryonic corpus?

I suspect we may be overthinking this. Whether 'Klip' or 'Clop', I doubt
Churchill was thinking of the sound of horses' hooves. He was probably
thinking of the sound a hole punch makes.

Given that what we are dealing with is an idiosyncratic onomatopoeic
representation of an inanimate object, unless the record shows Churchill
spelling it one way or the other, then I would respectfully suggest that
there is no 'correct' spelling. I would, however, not personally go for
'Kloppe', as it might lead to in insufficiently klipped pronunciation.

Merry Christmas to one and all!

I don’t think so!

As a an ex-Chartwell volunteer and ‘story’ researcher, we always spelt it
‘klop’. There are many references to Churchill and klop on Google, whereas
none relating to ‘clop’. Neither word has a dictionary definition in this
context, but the definition of ‘clop’ gives a hint to Churchill’s usage of
the word, being the noise made by a horse’s hoof, and that this might be
considered similar to the noise made by a hole punch.

Just IMHO.

Dear All,

I am preparing an article on _Darkest Hour_ for a French publication
and I am puzzled by a character in the film.

There is a young man who is often seen near Churchill, and he
initially shows Miss Layton round the 'War Rooms', but he is not named

On the other hand, there is a ‘Tom Leonard’ in the cast whose name

MacLennan – but his photographs on Google do not look like the young

Re: [ChurchillChat] Re: Mysterious young man in _Darkest Hour_ film : thanks

2019-12-23 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

Many thanks for your most helpful answers.

Yes - the cast identifies the young man as "John Evans".

A fictitious name, as Richard points out : John Martin in real life ?

There may be legal reasons why the producers did not use his real name
(though they do not hesitate to give that of 'real' politicians).

Who 'Tom Leonard' is in the film will have to remain clouded in mystery for
the time being.

All very puzzling, as I said initially.

As for what Richard writes : "The subway/underground scene and the private
visit of the King to WSC are pure fiction, but so beautifully done you can
forgive them", they form (especially the underground scene) the core of my
discussion in the article, entitled (in French) 'What do the "invented
scenes" in _Darkest Hour_ tell us ?'

And I duly refer to Gary Oldman's interview and the Hillsdale review in it.

Thanks again,

A. Capet

Dave- Good grub on the filmscript. I cannot find a "John Evans" in the
literature, including Colville's and Martin's memoirs, but "John Evans'"
instructions about WSC's requests are on the money. They show how carefully
the film was scripted. (The subway/underground scene and the private visit
of the King to WSC are pure fiction, but so beautifully done you can forgive
them.)

On a visit to Hillsdale College, Gary Oldman explained how he noticed ridges
worn into the arms of the chair in the War Rooms, where WSC constantly
drummed his fingernails, and how he tried to work that into his own
portrayal--which was masterful.

[ChurchillChat] Re: Mysterious young man in _Darkest Hour_ film

2019-12-23 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

I am preparing an article on _Darkest Hour_ for a French publication and I
am puzzled by a character in the film.

There is a young man who is often seen near Churchill, and he initially
shows Miss Layton round the 'War Rooms', but he is not named – I thought he
was Jock Colville. But then, there is no ‘Jock Colville’ in the cast.

On the other hand, there is a ‘Tom Leonard’ in the cast whose name does not
suggest anything to me. ‘Tom Leonard’ is played by Eric MacLennan – but his
photographs on Google do not look like the young man I mistook for Jock
Colville.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4555426/fullcredits

All very puzzling! I wonder who that young man is supposed to be!

Enlightenment most welcome.

With best wishes to all,

Re: [ChurchillChat] Passports : thanks

2019-10-11 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear Allen,

Many thanks - of course I meant a British passport, not honorary ones.

I wonder whether his 1893, 1918 and 1940 passports bear the usual foreign
stamps. If Yes, they must be extremely numerous.

I do not know how long current UK passports are valid for. I suppose the law
has changed and that they used to be valid for a longer period than now. In
that case, the three passports at Cambridge might well be all he had (though
he went to France as a boy, before 1893 - but at the time perhaps passports
were not needed).

All very fascinating !

A pity they are not displayed (one at least opened) at Chartwell or the
Churchill Museum.

With all best wishes,

A.C.

It may be of interest to members to look out for a TV program broadcast last
Tuesday as part of a series on National Trust properties (Secrets of the
National Trust) on C5 in the UK. It features the well-known gardener turned
general presenter Alan Titchmarsh and visited Chartwell on a beautiful snowy
winter???s day.. quite rare this year! There were some additional off-site
inserts covering some of Churchill???s projects including the plans for a
post-invasion guerrilla sabotage army operating out of underground bunkers
and the cliff-top gun emplacements between Walmer and Dover.

All-in-all a very well-done program that has ensured full-houses at
Chartwell in the fine weather this week!

Our recent discussion on the ‘Official Biography’ prompted me to tackle a job

Even though vols. 22 & 23 of The Churchill Documents will only appear later

Re: [ChurchillChat] The Churchill Documents ("concordance")

2019-06-25 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear Bob,

I believe you can use the following "concordance" :

Companions to OB 1-3 = Hillsdale Churchill Documents 1-7
Companions to OB 4-5 = Hillsdale Churchill Documents 8-13
Churchill War Papers (for vol. 6 of the OB) = Hillsdale Churchill Documents
14-16

New : Hillsdale Churchill Documents 17-21 = for vol. 7 of the OB
New : Hillsdale Churchill Documents 22-23 = for vol. 8 of the OB

So, you need to acquire The Churchill Documents 8-23 to have a complete set.

Subject: Re: [ChurchillChat] The Churchill Documents and Future Projects

I have a question for anyone in the group who can help. I have the entire
8-volume biography. It is from several publishers, so it is in various
forms, from hard- to paperback. That's okay with me since I am not a
collector, just an avid reader of the jolly old gent. As long as I have to
entire content, I am happy. I also have the companion volumes for bio vols.
1-3. The problem I am having is with the remainder. I know that many are
available from Hillsdale, but the descriptions don't match this from the
original bio companions. I also know that I cannot afford the WWII
companions as I have searched for these and have not found them in my price
range (being a retired public school teacher). I can, however quite well
afford the Hillsdale editions. But that is where the confusion over their
arrangement and descriptions begin to confuse me. Can someone help me so I
can once again sleep at night rather than lying there in a muddled state? My
thanks would be profound.

THE END IS NIGH!

Sandy Finlayson writes: "Is there any news on when the next Churchill
Documents volume will be released?"

The printer expects to ship Volume 22 ("The Opposition Years," August
1945-October 1951) in July. Let's say availability by September. The final
Volume 23 ("Never Flinch, Never Weary," November 1951-January 1965) will
appear in the autumn. Like previous volumes, each will sell for only $60,
well under cost, but commercial considerations are not the priority. All
volumes to date are available from Hillsdale College Bookstore.

Both volumes, well over 2500 pages, use a special paper designed to be thin
enough to bind, but not so thin as to cause "bleed-through" from print on
the other side.

Late last March, all of us proofreaders, kibitzers and editors read the
final document (Lady Churchill to Prime Minister Harold Wilson, 9 February
1965), and suddenly realized: IT'S OVER. The longest biography on the
planet, 15 million words, has ended, 57 years after Randolph Churchill set
to work. If he were here, I said on the recent Hillsdale Cruise, he would
probably say, "What took you so long?"

Well, what took so long was that Martin Gilbert found one huge pile of
stuff. There is a "wodge" of documents virtually for every day of
Churchill's life. We had a gala banquet in London to celebrate Randolph,
Martin, Dr. Larry Arnn and the Great Work, attended by all who had a hand in
it. Among them was Lady Gilbert (Esther), who spoke eloquently of Martin,
whose memory we cherish across the years. Her remarks and others will be up
on winstonchurchill.hillsdale.edu shortly. It was a moment.

Now this is not the end, or even the beginning of the end. Plans are afoot
for further works, including a new edition of the Collected Essays???expanded
from the original four volumes to many more, thanks to new material in the
Ronald Cohen collection and the Gilbert Papers, now acquired by Hillsdale.
Some of it represents an "unknown canon" of obscure Churchill works, not
seen since first publication. Like the OB, there will be electronic as well
as print editions, and an expanded online facility to ease research for
students and scholars.

If anyone would like to help support this great work, and have their name on
the wall in our new Archives Atrium, please contact me at
rlangwo...@hillsdale.edu.

[ChurchillChat] A 1952 controversy between Randolph S. Churchill and John F. Kennedy

Winston Churchill's son received this fiery letter from JFK now up for auction

IrishCentral Staff

A letter from John F. Kennedy to Winston Churchill’s son has been found and is
now up for auction.

In the letter, dated June 13, 1952, eight years before he would be elected
president of the U.S., Kennedy fires back at Randolph Churchill who had
publicly denounced America’s “holier-than-thou” attitude over the 1938 Munich
Agreement, which was broken by Adolf Hitler, leading to World War II.

In a letter published in the June 9, 1952 issue of Time magazine, the British
politician claimed that the United Kingdom “had no more moral or legal
obligation” than the United States to to protect Czechoslovakia from the Nazis.

In the four-page letter, Kennedy argued that Britain and France had closer ties
to the country and accused Britain of showing “tardiness” towards rearming
against the threat of the Nazis.

Kennedy’s letter came on top of his thesis Why England Slept, published in
1940, which examined Great Britain’s perceived failure to respond to the threat
from Germany after the First World War, the Daily Mail reports.

In the draft letter sent to Time magazine, Kennedy wrote: 'Randolph S.
Churchill denounces the "holier-than-thou" attitude adopted by some Americans
towards the English in regard to Munich and states that England "had no more
moral or legal obligation" to defend Czechoslovakia than had the United States.

'Mr Churchill implies that the respective positions of Great Britain and the
United States towards Czechoslovakia were on a par.

'As a member of the League of Nations, England had an obligation towards
collective security that the United States had not seen fit to assume.

'More important was Britain's military alliance with France... which although
it did not guarantee Czechoslovakia against aggression, made it inevitable that
if France went to war... England would be drawn in.

'Thus England was deeply committed, by her treaty ties with France and by her
official actions, to the settlement of the issues at stake.

'That the British chose peace at this time rather than war is not, in my
opinion, to their discredit, considering the poor condition of their armaments.

'...the criticism directed against Munich could have been directed with more
accuracy at Britain's tardiness in rearming than against the pact itself.'

The draft letter is up for auction with US auctioneers Lion Heart Autographs.

As I told marchers at last Saturday’s demonstration in London, I dismiss
with contempt the image of us as an island wrapped in a union jack, glorying
in the famous phrase that captured, for so many, Winston Churchill’s spirit
of defiance in 1940: “Very well, alone”. I was there. I saw our army
evacuated, our cities bombed, our convoys sunk. Churchill did everything in
his power to end this isolation. Alone was never Churchill’s hope or wish:
it was his fear.

2018-06-08 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

Seen on the BBC site today :

Austria to shut seven 'political' mosques and expel imams

. . . Some mosques are suspected of having links to Turkish nationalists. In
April images emerged showing children in Turkish army uniforms re-enacting
the World War One Battle of Gallipoli. . .

The Gallipoli re-enactment performance took place in a Vienna mosque
reported to be run by ATIB. The WW1 battle, one of the last victories of the
Ottoman Empire, stopped Allied forces reaching its capital, Constantinople.
Austrian media report (in German) that the child actors played dead and were
covered with Turkish flags.

[ChurchillChat] Re: John Keegan's _Winston Churchill: A Life_

2018-04-14 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

John Keegan's _Winston Churchill: A Life_ has just been published in France
(in French translation) - N°1 this morning in Amazon.Fr sales for books on
the history of the UK :

https://www.amazon.fr/Winston-Churchill-Une-John-Keegan/dp/2251448004/ref=zg_bs_637554_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=XQKN9S0B8MVPVZYCBV26

This led me to look up the review published ten years ago by H-Albion, the
international organisation of historians of the UK based at Michgan State
University :

https://networks.h-net.org/node/16749/reviews/18151/mccrillis-keegan-winston-churchill-life

I found the statistics given by the reviewer extremely interesting. I wonder
whether the pace of publications on Churchill continued to accelerate in the
past ten years. Any information on the subject ?

Re: [ChurchillChat] Hollywood Rewards Mass Murderer - Read All About It!!!

2018-03-11 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Sorry, but I cannot imagine even a "liberal" newspaper publishing "opinion
pieces that are not in accord with its own editorial positions".

This Indian official's text is venomous - and the paper knew it and
deliberately published it regardless.

"They hate us", your President correctly said of other people in another
context - this fully applies to this Indian official : "he hates
Churchill" - full stop.

No educated editor (as one may expect of a publication with a claim to
seriousness) could miss the fact - and the paper did not publish a paragraph
distancing itself from the offensive opinion proffered. So it endorses it by
default.

That is not a Washington Post opinion. It is a guest op-ed. The Post
routinely publishes opinion pieces that are not in accord with its own
editorial positions.

[ChurchillChat] Re: Why did Churchill not like detective novels ?

2018-03-04 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

I read somewhere (I do not remember where) that Churchill did not like
detective novels.

Does one know why ?

In a letter to Clementine of 17 August 1944, he praises _Berlin Hotel_ by
Vicky Baum. Not a 'detective novel' properly speaking, but not far from the
genre.

Re: [ChurchillChat] "Darkest Hour"

2018-01-22 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat
A substantial critique of the film in the context of past Churchill movies
and series appeared last Thursday in the New York Review of Books :

"A Star Is Born" by Geoffrey Wheatcroft

JANUARY 18, 2018 ISSUE

Excerpts :

. . .

[...]

This year’s cinematic incarnations aren’t bad by those variable standards,
although it seems
that Clementine is as easy a part to get right as Winston is to get wrong.
There have been few
bad performances of that highly intelligent, highly strung, intimidating
lady. Harriet Walter
was good in The Crown, and Miranda Richardson in _Churchill_ and Kristin
Scott Thomas in
Darkest Hour both shine. As to Churchill, Brian Cox is more than adequate in
the former, and
Gary Oldman surprisingly good in the latter, another improbable piece of
casting for an actor

whose previous roles have included Sid Vicious and Lee Harvey Oswald.
Both these movies are heroic fantasies. As _Churchill_ opens, shortly before
D-Day, our hero
walks by the seashore and sees the water running blood red. He is, we are to
suppose,
obsessed by the horrors of the Gallipoli landings twenty-nine years earlier—“so
many young
men, so much waste”—and consumed by dread of another futile slaughter on the
beaches of
Normandy. He attends an unlikely open-air conference with Eisenhower,
Montgomery, and
King George VI, where he pleads for the landings—the greatest of their kind
in history and
years in the planning—to be canceled. Not surprisingly he’s politely ignored
and goes home

to sulk.
To add a bizarre touch, Churchill insists, before leaving home, that he must
wear formal dress
with knee breeches to meet the sovereign. Later on there are some more droll
moments, as
when Churchill tells a minion to find out from General Sir Harold Alexander
whether he has
taken Rome yet, something that the Allied commander in Italy would quite
likely have

communicated quickly to the prime minister when it happened.
These movies tend to have a tenuous basis in fact. [...]

. . . .

Best wishes to all,

Adding my “two cents” on the use of dramatic license.

The scene of Churchill speaking in the House of Commons, and various people,
including King George, listening on the radio.

Churchill did speak on the radio from the Canadian House of Commons on
December 30, 1941 – but as I said in my book on Churchill and the Canadian
P.M. Mackenzie King – “It is unfortunate that Churchill’s efforts to allow
radio broadcasts from the British House of Commons came to nought, and the
public there were denied the opportunity of hearing them first hand. Thus an
overworked Prime Minister had to repeat his speeches over the BBC, usually
the same day, and not surprisingly some sound as if he was bored with the
process, which he was.”

Still a most enjoyable film and a superb possible Oscar winning performance
from Gary Oldham.

[ChurchillChat] Re: Churchillian phrase, 'ma Française est très pauvre'

2018-01-13 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear Allen,

Many thanks - on two accounts :

-First, because you and your team at Cambridge were so supportive all along
(and your Centre duly benefits from an entry in the Dictionnaire).

-Secondly, because you made me laugh so much : your attempts at writing in
French, though as highly commendable as those of Churchill, are equally,
shall we say, 'Churchillian' - what you rightly call 'Churchill’s
distinctive style of French' !
Not that I am mocking Churchill or you (my attempts at writing in, say,
German would be even more disastrous !)

Your phrase, 'ma Francaise est tres pauvre' (which means 'my Frenchwoman is
very poor)* reminded me of Churchill saying 'nous devons faire bonne', as
reported in OB 5 p. 929 and in Documents 13 p. 964** !

With warmest thanks once more,

A.C.

* Mon Français (capital F) = my Frenchman / mon français (small f) = my
French (language)

** The 'improper meaning' which the Ambassador had in mind is not clear. He
probably had in mind that 'la bonne' means 'the housemaid'. In very vulgar
French 'se faire la bonne' would mean to have sex with the housemaid. But
Churchill did not actually say 'nous devons nous faire la bonne' !

Jonathan,
Ah, but it gets even better than that. I have this from grandson Winston
(1940-2010, R.I.P.):

"In 1942, as you know, my grandfather went to Moscow to tell Stalin there would
be no Second Front anytime soon. The conversation left both of them infuriated.
In the early 1990s, I happened to meet Mikhail Gorbachev’s interpreter. I’d
always wanted to know, I asked him, whether, in Soviet circles, there’s
anything to this story

"Allegedly my grandfather, back at his embassy, never one to hold a grudge,
pens a private note to Stalin: 'The hour was late, we both said things we
regret, let us expunge it from the record and start again tomorrow.' And Stalin
supposedly replies, 'The hour was indeed late, we both said things we regret,
we shall start over, and the only witness to our conversation was the
interpreter…..who has been shot.'

“''That is a very amusing story,' said Mikhail Gorbachev’s interpreter…. 'But I
can assure you, Mr. Churchill, my father lived a long and productive life.'”

[ChurchillChat] Re: Paris-Match album on Churchill

2017-12-23 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat
Paris-Match, the well-known French illustrated weekly (originally founded in
imitation of _Life_) has just published a special 100-page fully-illustrated
album without advertisements on Churchill, on the occasion of the release in
France of the film, _Darkest Hour_.

It has several superb colour photographs on full pages - the best being the
largest and sharpest I have even seen of Churchill in his Stetson hat and
siren suit relaxing on a garden bench of Chartwell with Rufus II sitting
next to him

There are also excellent still photographs taken when the film was being
shot.

In France, it is a bargain at the price (6.95 euros) - the cover gives the
price for Canada (presumably for sales in Quebec) : 11.99 Canadian dollars.

I do not know whether it will be made available in the UK and USA (possibly
at airports ?)

Well worth looking for, in any case.

[ChurchillChat] Re: origin of the phrase "Action This Day"

2017-11-21 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

A colleague writes :

I finding it very difficult to trace an origin for the phrase "Action This
Day," employed by the Churchill ministry during WWII. Although I have found
non-Churchillian origins for a great number of wartime things credited to
him, I can't find anything about this (not even a reference to when
Churchill himself might have conceived it). I strongly suspect that it was
invented by a civil servant or whatever passed for an organizational
management guru in those days, but so far I've had no luck. It may also have
been a Bletchley-Park-ism, but I can't find that either.

Any clues ? Any references to books or articles ?

With all best wishes,

2017-11-06 Thread 'Antoine Capet' via ChurchillChat

Dear All,

If some of you happen to be in Paris or go there before 30 November, I
warmly recommend a play on Churchill and de Gaulle on the eve of the
