Dear All,

A new book which is bound to have substantial Churchill content :

When France Fell: The Vichy Crisis and the Fate of the Anglo-American Alliance
by Michael S. Neiberg | Oct 29, 2021

“An utterly gripping account, the best to date, of relations within the
turbulent triumvirate of France, Britain, and America in the Second World War.
Neiberg vividly brings to life the extraordinary military, domestic, personal,
and political pressures on giants such as Franklin Roosevelt, Winston
Churchill, and Charles de Gaulle, while also showing the immediate practical
effect their interactions had on ordinary people in the struggle against the
Nazis.”

Dear All,

I am continuing with my English version of my Dictionnaire Churchill.

I am now tackling "Churchill and 'Europe' ", and I stumble upon a difficulty
which I had not spotted when preparing the French edition :

Did his speech in Metz take place on 14 or 15 July 1946 ?

His collection of speeches for 1946, _The Sinews of War_ says 14 (p.171) - so
does RR James in his Complete Speeches (p. 7357), probably culled from _The
Sinews of War_, however.

But the OB reads : "Churchill spoke, first in Luxembourg on July 14, and on the
following day in Metz".

Gilbert, Martin. Winston S. Churchill: Never Despair, 1945–1965 (Volume VIII,
p. 246).

Is there any way to tell who is right ?

The second printing is scheduled for late this month (May), which means
delivery in June.

HOWEVER: The second printing has already sold out in advance, and the printer
refused the publisher's request to increase the size of the second printing.
This means that if you have still not ordered the book, you will not be able to
obtain a copy until there has been a third printing, which will not happen
until the summer.

I don’t think so!

As a an ex-Chartwell volunteer and ‘story’ researcher, we always spelt it
‘klop’. There are many references to Churchill and klop on Google, whereas none
relating to ‘clop’. Neither word has a dictionary definition in this context,
but the definition of ‘clop’ gives a hint to Churchill’s usage of the word,
being the noise made by a horse’s hoof, and that this might be considered
similar to the noise made by a hole punch.

Just IMHO.

Dear Antoine,

You can find the script for the film at
https://www.scriptslug.com/assets/uploads/scripts/darkest-hour-2017.pdf

A quick search seems to indicate that the character in question is John
Evans - Churchill's private secretary. (Not sure if that's a 'real'
character - I bet Richard knows :-). Played by Joe Armstrong.

the TRAY passes by - WINSTON’s PRIVATE SECRETARY, JOHN EVANS (35), as he
schools the NEW YOUNG SECRETARY, ELIZABETH LAYTON. Evans, an
immaculately-groomed rake, snobbishly thinks himself infinitely superior to
the Elizabeth Laytons of the world.

JOHN EVANS(to ELIZABETH)...and if he stretches out his hand and says,
“Gimme”, you need to anticipate what he wants - black pen, red pen, paper,
or “Clop”, that’s his hole punch.

Best,

Dave

Dear All,

I am preparing an article on _Darkest Hour_ for a French publication and I
am puzzled by a character in the film.

There is a young man who is often seen near Churchill, and he initially
shows Miss Layton round the 'War Rooms', but he is not named – I thought he
was Jock Colville. But then, there is no ‘Jock Colville’ in the cast.

On the other hand, there is a ‘Tom Leonard’ in the cast whose name does not
suggest anything to me. ‘Tom Leonard’ is played by Eric MacLennan – but his
photographs on Google do not look like the young man I mistook for Jock
Colville.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4555426/fullcredits

All very puzzling! I wonder who that young man is supposed to be!

Enlightenment most welcome.

Dear Bob,

I believe you can use the following "concordance" :

Companions to OB 1-3 = Hillsdale Churchill Documents 1-7 Companions to OB 4-5 =
Hillsdale Churchill Documents 8-13 Churchill War Papers (for vol. 6 of the OB)
= Hillsdale Churchill Documents
14-16
New : Hillsdale Churchill Documents 17-21 = for vol. 7 of the OB New :
Hillsdale Churchill Documents 22-23 = for vol. 8 of the OB

So, you need to acquire The Churchill Documents 8-23 to have a complete set.

I have a question for anyone in the group who can help. I have the entire
8-volume biography. It is from several publishers, so it is in various forms,
from hard- to paperback. That's okay with me since I am not a collector, just
an avid reader of the jolly old gent. As long as I have to entire content, I am
happy. I also have the companion volumes for bio vols.
1-3. The problem I am having is with the remainder. I know that many are
available from Hillsdale, but the descriptions don't match this from the
original bio companions. I also know that I cannot afford the WWII companions
as I have searched for these and have not found them in my price range (being a
retired public school teacher). I can, however quite well afford the Hillsdale
editions. But that is where the confusion over their arrangement and
descriptions begin to confuse me. Can someone help me so I can once again sleep
at night rather than lying there in a muddled state? My thanks would be
profound.

Sandy Finlayson writes: "Is there any news on when the next Churchill
Documents volume will be released?"

The printer expects to ship Volume 22 ("The Opposition Years," August
1945-October 1951) in July. Let's say availability by September. The final
Volume 23 ("Never Flinch, Never Weary," November 1951-January 1965) will
appear in the autumn. Like previous volumes, each will sell for only $60,
well under cost, but commercial considerations are not the priority. All
volumes to date are available from Hillsdale College Bookstore.

Both volumes, well over 2500 pages, use a special paper designed to be thin
enough to bind, but not so thin as to cause "bleed-through" from print on
the other side.

Late last March, all of us proofreaders, kibitzers and editors read the
final document (Lady Churchill to Prime Minister Harold Wilson, 9 February
1965), and suddenly realized: IT'S OVER. The longest biography on the
planet, 15 million words, has ended, 57 years after Randolph Churchill set
to work. If he were here, I said on the recent Hillsdale Cruise, he would
probably say, "What took you so long?"

Well, what took so long was that Martin Gilbert found one huge pile of
stuff. There is a "wodge" of documents virtually for every day of
Churchill's life. We had a gala banquet in London to celebrate Randolph,
Martin, Dr. Larry Arnn and the Great Work, attended by all who had a hand in
it. Among them was Lady Gilbert (Esther), who spoke eloquently of Martin,
whose memory we cherish across the years. Her remarks and others will be up
on winstonchurchill.hillsdale.edu shortly. It was a moment.

Now this is not the end, or even the beginning of the end. Plans are afoot
for further works, including a new edition of the Collected Essays???expanded
from the original four volumes to many more, thanks to new material in the
Ronald Cohen collection and the Gilbert Papers, now acquired by Hillsdale.
Some of it represents an "unknown canon" of obscure Churchill works, not
seen since first publication. Like the OB, there will be electronic as well
as print editions, and an expanded online facility to ease research for
students and scholars.

If anyone would like to help support this great work, and have their name on
the wall in our new Archives Atrium, please contact me at

Dear All,

Interesting reference to Churchill and June 1940 by the former Conservative
minister Michael Heseltine :

As I told marchers at last Saturday’s demonstration in London, I dismiss with
contempt the image of us as an island wrapped in a union jack, glorying in the
famous phrase that captured, for so many, Winston Churchill’s spirit of
defiance in 1940: “Very well, alone”. I was there. I saw our army evacuated,
our cities bombed, our convoys sunk. Churchill did everything in his power to
end this isolation. Alone was never Churchill’s hope or wish:
it was his fear.

Silver gelatin print

Dear Irwin,

I am delighted to present this alternative portrait by Yousuf Karsh of the
enigmatic Winston Churchill, taken upon Churchill's trip to North America in
1941. The photograph was taken at the same sitting as Karsh's now infamous
portrait of a disgruntled Churchill, which has become the most recognisable
image of the politician.

Karsh was invited to photograph Churchill by the Canadian Prime Minister,
MacKenzie King, following his speech in the Canadian House of Commons. Karsh
was waiting, with his equipment prepared, for Churchill as he entered the
Speaker's Chamber, however, the politician had not been warned of sitting and,
becoming irritated, lit one of his trademark cigars. Karsh waited patiently
until Churchill relented and agreed to have his photograph taken. He would not
however put down his cigar, so the young Karsh audaciously stepped forward and
pulled it from Churchill's mouth. This action produced one of the most
important portraits of the twentieth century, as a stoic Churchill stares back
at the camera.

Impressed by Karsh's boldness, Churchill allowed him to take a second portrait,
depicting a more relaxed Churchill with the same characterful expression and
dramatic lighting that Karsh is celebrated for. We are the sole representative
of the Yousuf Karsh Archive in the UK and we have recently received information
that there are just five prints remaining. We have two prints available, with a
further three to be released by the archive with pricing to follow.

Subject: [ChurchillChat] Notification: Churchill Conference March 23/24, 2018

[Churchill Society of Tennessee]Early bird registration for Churchill Society’s
first conference in Tennessee continues through Jan. 15

Randolph Churchill, Sir Winston Churchill’s great grandson and president of the
International Churchill Society, will speak at the first conference hosted by
the Churchill Society of Tennessee in March. Registration is now open, and an
early bird discount is being offered through Jan. 15, 2018.

The conference is March 23-24, 2018, and will be held in Nashville and
Franklin, Tennessee. Early bird registration ends on Jan. 15, after which time
the early registration discount ends but registration will continue.
Registration is at https://churchillsocietytn.org/regional-conference.

The local society formed in 2016 as a chapter of the international society
which promotes the legacy of Sir Winston Churchill, Britain’s prime minister
during World War II. Churchill Society of Tennessee president, Dr. John Mather,
said the society members “enjoy convivial conversation while gaining a greater
appreciation for THE MAN of the 20th Century.” The conference is a chance to
explore the man and his words, interests and life.

Churchill’s great grandson is the featured speaker and will kick-off the
Schermerhorn Symphony Hall Friday evening concert of the Nashville Symphony
Orchestra. He will be reading two of Sir Winston Churchill’s speeches to the
accompaniment of a string quartet with music composed by Belmont’s Don Cusic.

As it is Music City, many conference sessions are devoted to the various
aspects of Sir Winston Churchill’s great appreciation for all kinds of music.
Nashville Symphony Conductor Giancarlo Guerrero will be delivering the keynote
address: “Churchill Did Not Have a Tin Ear” on Friday morning. Sessions will
continue throughout the day at the Schermerhorn. Saturday, the conferences
moves to Franklin, where the local chapter was founded, for a review of
Churchill’s insights into the Civil War in the US, including a focus on the
Battle of Franklin in 1865.

Other speakers include Belmont University Curb Professor of Music Industry
History Don Cusic, local educator and Holocaust lecturer Inge Smith, Rutgers
Professor Dr. Warren Kimball, local historian Thomas Cartwright, “Never Give
In: The Extraordinary Character of Winston Churchill” author Stephen Mansfield,
“Winston & Jack, The Churchill Brothers,” author Celia Lee, and writer Lee
Pollock.

More information on the full program of activities, registration and the hotel
(including early bird info) can be found at
www.churchillsocietytn.org.

RE: [ChurchillChat] Darkest Hour

2018-01-04 Thread Cita Stelzer
The movie used noisy click/clack typewriters for audio/visual effects,
effectively so, in my view for Hollywood.
In real life, Churchill demanded his typists use noiseless ones as he hated
noises of any sort.
Lee is correct: It was Ed Murrow who first used that line, stolen w/o
attribution by President Kennedy.

I believe the line about the English language was originally by Edward R.
Murrow but was used by Pres. Kennedy in his remarks at the White House ceremony
for Churchill's honorary citizenship in April 1963, so it's often attributed to
him. (He didn't reference Murrow but I suppose Presidents can say whatever

My loving wife does lots of nice things for me and one of the latest was to
drag me to "Darkest Hour". I really enjoyed it!! Some comments: after the
first scene where we see Churchill ranting against the typewriter noise, we
STILL hear the typewriter noise in subsequent scenes, although we all know he
insisted on a silent typewriter. Halifax's last comment at the end "he
mobilized the English language and sent it into battle" - wasn't that by
President Kennedy?
There have been comments about Churchill's foray onto the Tube - yes, it
would have been totally out of character, but something like that was
cinematically necessary, as with the King's visit to demonstrate that the
country wanted to fight and not surrender. What I still cannot understand is
why anyone in their right mind would ever have thought that Britain could have
gotten anything like a semi-respectable negotiated peace in 1940. Or why if
Hitler had ever agreed to it, that he would have stuck to it. Talk about
living in cloud-cuckooland!

The review is by Godfrey Cheshire, and appears on RogerEbert.com (Mr. Ebert
having been dead since 2013). You will get a clear picture of his thoughts by
the first paragraph:

In the annals of historical biopics, Jonathan Teplitzsky’s “Churchill” stands
out as a uniquely awful and tedious caricature of a fascinating subject. The
film, which imagines British prime minister Winston S. Churchill as wracked
with misgivings and opposing the Allied Forces’ D-Day invasion until the very
last minute, strikes this reviewer as a load of utter rubbish from first frame
to last.

Take care.

I made the mistake of going to the new Churchill film last night. While the
producers made the point in the credits that the film was based on historical
events but that scenes and dialogue had been made up, this was still an awful
film that does a disservice to WSC. Roger Ebert's review which can be read
here is an accurate summation
of many of the "issues" with the film.

What's most alarming to me is that a lot of people get their history from the
movies and if they do in this case they will get a deeply flawed picture of
Churchill. After watching the film the most sensible question to ask would be,
why on earth would anyone have followed the Churchill portrayed in this film?

If you haven't already seen it, don't waste your money on it.

RE: [ChurchillChat] Churchill Photo...

2017-04-03 Thread Cita Stelzer
Hi,
I’ve seen several photos of Churchill inspecting troops in the desert
but not ever one where he was wearing a black coat. He was always wearing khaki
colored clothes.
Sorry this does not help much. Is your family certain it was in the
desert?
In any case, your grandfather was a hero!

Subject: [ChurchillChat] Churchill Photo...

Hi,

I was recommended to get in contact with you from David Freeman of
WinstonChurchill.org. I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out with
something...

I am trying to get hold of a specific photo of that was taken of Sir Winston
Churchill. The picture was (I presume taken, and) published in a newspaper in
August 1942. In the photo he was inspecting the South African troops in the
Libyan Desert. He has the classic pose in a long black coat and cigar, and is
about to shake the hand of one of the troops, who is my grandfather, Lionel
Rothbart.

My mother used to own this photo (possibly even the original) and it was always
very dear to her, but she has been distraught since it got lost. It would mean
a lot to me, and a tremendous amount to her if you could help me find a copy of
this picture.

Unfortunately, I don't remember which newspaper it was published in.

Let me know,
Thank you!
Myer

You'll see a lot of pictures of Churchill with a walking stick. That is not a
cane as we think it; it was (and is) a fashion accessory, same utility as a top
hat. Not carried for mobility reasons. I recall the Prince of Wales gave WSC
a walking stick as a wedding present.

I found Churchill's portrayal by John Lithgow to be okay, but objected to his
"overuse" of a cane. Churchill didn't use the cane that much, at least not
until 1953 and beyond. There were a few other mistakes (such as, for example,
the Duke of Edinburgh's portrayal), but overall I thought it was pretty good.

Dear All,

I have been asked to give a talk on “Churchill and Elizabeth II”, and I will
naturally allude to the final dinner at Downing Street.

I can only find fragmentary information on the guests – I cannot find a full
list in my usual sources.

Neither can I find the full text of Churchill’s speech on the occasion – only
passages.

Any leads would be welcome.

[ChurchillChat] USA TV Broadcast of Churchill's Secret

2016-09-13 Thread Cita Stelzer
Whether "Churchill's Secret", broadcast in the USA last night, was riveting
television I leave to the critics. But that it was historically inaccurate at
one important point there is no doubt. Lindsay Duncan's beautifully acted
television version of Clemmie as a wife competing with his political career for
his time and attention has no relation to the real-life version. Clementine
Churchill, as I point out in my review of Sonia Purnell's biography of
Clementine Churchill, was no whining woman at odds with her husband's political
life. In fact, Clemmie was a full partner in his political career, entertaining
politicians and military figures when he was away in the trenches in WWI. And
as any fair reading of their voluminous correspondence shows, offering wise
advice to the often impetuous-Winston, advice that prolonged his career. Not
only was she a full partner in his work, she had a full and rich life of her
own, witness her fund-raising work for the Red Cross's Aid to the Soviet Union.
Kudos to Ms. Duncan, and don't blame her for being asked to portray the fiction
of a novelist's imagination.
