As reporter Sebastian Jones points out (see this and this ), former Congressman
Richard Gephardt runs a lobbying firm representing giant insurance and
pharmaceutical companies.

Retired General Barry McCaffrey sits on the board of a giant defense
contractor, DynCorp, and lobbies for war.

And many other pundits interviewed by the mainstream news are really
high-level lobbyists for giant companies, pushing their agendas.

And yet they are treated as independent experts by the media.

Indeed - 2 years after Jones asked the large networks why they don't have a
disclaimer on the screen beneath the pundits' names saying who they really work
for - nothing has been done.

The corporate media are acting like virtual escort services for the powerful,
selling access - for a price - to viewers and to powerful government officials,
instead of actually investigating and reporting on what those in power are
actually doing.

[cia-drugs] How Obama Sold Out Paul Volker

How Obama Sold Out Paul Volker

Charlie Gasparino explains how Obama's investment banker friends killed Paul
Volker's reform plan that Obama proudly announced last month. The fixers always
seem to win in Washington -- one of the best arguments I know for limited
government..

The president needed the gravitas of the former Fed chairman to sell his bank
reform to Wall Street. But when the big banks didn't buy it, Obama sold him
out.
Barack Obama owes Paul Volcker a lot, but he apparently owes the fat cats on
Wall Street even more. That's the only reasonable conclusion that can be made
from the president's timely and, in some ways, bizarre about-face on the former
Fed chairman's plans to reform the financial industry and prevent another
meltdown.

As first reported by the New York Post, Volcker's bank-reform idea-the one
trotted out by the president with Volcker standing at his side just hours after
Republican Scott Brown won Teddy Kennedy's seat and vowed to help crush Obama's
economic agenda-has been nixed in favor of a watered-down version that bank
chiefs like J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon and other Obama supporters on Wall
Street are advocating.

I am told that both Larry Summers and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, good
friends of Wall Street, considered the 82-year-old Volcker little more than a
crank who should be ignored. And so he was.

The Volcker Plan, as I have reported in The Daily Beast, certainly had its
shortcomings; its main emphasis was to stop banks that are deemed Too Big to
Fail from engaging in so-called proprietary trading, or engaging in risky
trades with their own capital-the theory being that taxpayers would again have
to bail out the banks if their bets turned sour, as they did in 2007 and 2008.

The problem with the proposal was that proprietary trading wasn't the major
reason for all those big losses that led to the financial collapse and the
taxpayer bailouts.

Yet for all its drawbacks, at least the Volcker Plan was the start of a
conversation about whether taxpayers should be forced to subsidize the
risk-taking activities of Wall Street. That debate, as we know now, is over.
Sources tell me a coalition of Wall Street heavyweights from Dimon to people
like Larry Fink, the head of money-management powerhouse BlackRock-Obama
supporters all-made their opposition to the plan well-known to the
administration.

The message was clear: Wall Street, which helped elect Barack Obama with an
unprecedented support for a Democratic presidential candidate (Goldman Sachs
was the second largest contributor to the president's campaign), was ready to
start backing the opposition of the so-called Volcker Rule. The bottom line:
Even as Main Street struggles with severe unemployment, Wall Street still wants
its billions in bonuses.

And with that, Volcker, one of the nation's great economists, was thrown under
the bus. Of course, the administration is still pushing for reform of the
banking system to prevent another meltdown, but by all accounts, the measures
floated so far will do nothing more than force the firms to hold a little more
capital if they want to roll the dice in the markets. The main thrust of what
Volcker wanted to do and needs to be done-prevent the American taxpayer from
ever again having to subsidized banks' risk taking-appears nowhere to be found.

Of course, you don't have to be a political junkie to understand why the
president did a 180 on Volcker and his plan; already, Wall Street has begun to
hedge its bets by supporting some Republicans, and it isn't a good thing having
someone as powerful as Jamie Dimon, a lifelong Democrat and Obama supporter,
against you. (People close to Dimon say while he still supports the president,
he's also angered by some of his agenda.)

Even so, there was something particularly smarmy about how the former Fed
chairman was used. Volcker's greatest achievement was defeating an economic
calamity known as stagflation-the combination of high unemployment and high
inflation-that scorched the American economy in the late 1970s, and threatened
the country's status as the world's pre-eminent superpower.

Volcker left the Fed in the mid-1980s and since then has been sounding the
alarm bells on all those financial innovations that blew up in 2008 and still
haunt the banking system. He hated one of the greatest of these innovations:
the creation of the financial supermarket model of banking that combined
risk-taking trading activities with federally insured deposits. If Volcker had
his way, there would have been no Citigroup, one of the most costly of the
bailed-out banks, and we would have been all better off for it.

In 2007, Volcker became an early supporter of then-candidate Obama. I am told
Volcker believed Obama had the temperament to tackle the massive spending in

[cia-drugs] Afghanistan's thriving opium trade

Officials puzzle over millions of dollars leaving Afghanistan by plane
for Dubai

By Andrew Higgins
Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, February 25, 2010; A10

KABUL -- A blizzard of bank notes is flying out of Afghanistan -- often
in full view of customs officers at the Kabul airport -- as part of a
cash exodus that is confounding U.S. officials and raising concerns
about the money's origin.

The cash, estimated to total well over $1 billion a year, flows mostly
to the Persian Gulf emirate of Dubai, where many wealthy Afghans now
park their families and funds, according to U.S. and Afghan officials.
So long as departing cash is declared at the airport here, its transfer
is legal.

But at a time when the United States and its allies are spending
billions of dollars to prop up the fragile government of President Hamid
Karzai, the volume of the outflow has stirred concerns that funds have
been diverted from aid. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, for
its part, is trying to figure out whether some of the money comes from
Afghanistan's thriving opium trade. And officials in neighboring
Pakistan think that at least some of the cash leaving Kabul has been
smuggled overland from Pakistan.

All this money magically appears from nowhere, said a U.S. official
who monitors Afghanistan's growing role as a hub for cash transfers to
Dubai, which has six flights a day to and from Kabul.

Meanwhile, the United States is stepping up efforts to stop money flow
in the other direction -- into Afghanistan and Pakistan in support of
al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Senior Treasury Department officials visited
Kabul this month to discuss the cash flows and other issues relating to
this country's infant, often chaotic financial sector.

Tracking Afghan exchanges has long been made difficult by the widespread
use of traditional money-moving outfits, known as hawalas, which keep
few records. The Afghan central bank, supported by U.S. Treasury
advisers, is trying to get a grip on them by licensing their operations.

In the meantime, the money continues to flow. Cash declaration forms
filed at Kabul International Airport and reviewed by The Washington Post
show that Afghan passengers took more than $180 million to Dubai during
a two-month period starting in July. If that rate held for the entire
year, the amount of cash that left Afghanistan in 2009 would have far
exceeded the country's annual tax and other domestic revenue of about
$875 million.

The declaration forms highlight the prominent and often opaque role
played by hawalas. Asked to identify the source of funds in forms
issued by the Afghan central bank, cash couriers frequently put down the
name of the same Kabul hawala, an outfit called New Ansari Exchange.

Early last month, Afghan police and intelligence officers raided New
Ansari's office in Kabul's bazaar district, carting away documents and
computers, said Afghan bankers familiar with the operation. U.S.
officials declined to comment on what prompted the raid. New Ansari
Exchange, which is affiliated with a licensed Afghan bank, closed for a
day or so but was soon up and running again.

The total volume of departing cash is almost certainly much higher than
the declared amount. A Chinese man, for instance, was arrested recently
at the Kabul airport carrying 800,000 undeclared euros (about $1.1 million).

Cash also can be moved easily through a VIP section at the airport, from
which Afghan officials generally leave without being searched. American
officials said that they have repeatedly raised the issue of special
treatment for VIPs at the Kabul airport with the Afghan government but
that they have made no headway.

One U.S. official said he had been told by a senior Dubai police officer
that an Afghan diplomat flew into the emirate's airport last year with
more than $2 million worth of euros in undeclared cash. The Afghan
consul general in Dubai, Haji Rashoudin Mohammadi, said in a telephone
interview that he was not aware of any such incident.

The high volume of cash passing through Kabul's airport first came to
light last summer when British company Global Strategies Group, which
has an airport security contract, started filing reports on the money
transfers at the request of Afghanistan's National Directorate of
Security, the domestic intelligence agency. The country's notoriously
corrupt police force, however, complained about this arrangement, and
Global stopped its reporting in September, according to someone familiar
with the matter.

Afghan bankers interviewed in Kabul said that much of the money that
does get declared belongs to traders who want to buy goods in Dubai but
want to avoid the fees, delays and paperwork that result from
conventional wire transfers.

The cash flown out of Kabul includes a wide range of foreign currencies.
Most is in U.S.

Bernanke probing Goldman's dealings with Greece

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke
revealed Thursday that the central bank is looking into Goldman Sachs
Group Inc.'s dealings with the Greek government. We are looking into a
number of questions of Goldman Sachs' derivative arrangements with
Greece, Bernanke said in testimony before the Senate Banking Committee.
The European Union has demanded that the Greek government provide
details of how it used currency swaps and other instruments. The New
York Times reported that Greece in 2001 had borrowed billions, with the
aid of Goldman Sachs /quotes/comstock/13*!gs/quotes/nls/gs (GS 156.36,
-0.08, -0.05%) in a deal hidden from public view because it was treated
as a currency trade rather than a loan. Bernanke also said the Fed was
looking into trading of credit default swaps that allow financial firms
and investors to bet that Greece will default on its debt. Bernanke said
this trading was counter-productive and under review by the Fed and
the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Where was the FBI kid? That's the last mystery for me.

We almost had a Columbine here. A 12-year-old brought a bag of rifles
and shotguns to school. He rode with his mother, who worked at the
school. An assistant principal jumped him in the bathroom when the
ap heard a gun cocking or lock and load sound. The boy had pointed
a gun at people in another room, and been seen walking the hall with
a rifle. I spoke on cell phone with a student who was locked in a class
room, and with our CIA drug refugee who was off campus. I phoned
a parent to tell him to pick up his son at a nearby elementary school.
I had been alerted by a huddle of cops while a helicopter hovered
above the school, which said to me there was a hostage situation.

I think the mother did jail time.

Where was the Columbine FBI kid? If we're talking about how Eric
Harris and Dylan Kliebold got that way, they were in an FBI program
written by the lead investigator after the fact. Where was the FBI kid?

 The Last Columbine Mystery
 by Dave Cullen

AP Photo As another school shooting rocks Littleton, Colorado, Dave
Cullen reveals the secret meeting of Eric Harris' parents with his
victims' kin-offering a rare glimpse into how they saw their son.

It's been nearly 11 years since the Columbine tragedy rocked the
nation, and the largest remaining questions center on the killers'
parents: Did they see it coming? Why do they think it happened? How did
the tragedy affect them? Do they feel remorse? Have they expressed it to
the victims?

Sue Klebold finally addressed those questions last October in an essay
in O Magazine. But her son Dylan was the junior partner in the attack.
Eric Harris was the mastermind, and his parents have never spoken
publicly. But it turns out they secretly met with two victims' families,
who quietly but diligently pursued contact for years. The existence of
those meetings-one of which is recounted in detail here-has never before
been reported.

Wayne and Kathy accepted that Eric was a psychopath. Where that came
from, they didn't know. But he fooled them, utterly.

Tom and Linda Mauser's son Daniel was shot to death by Eric in the
Columbine library. Last summer, the couple finally met Eric's parents.
The meeting took years to arrange. It began in 2007, with an angry
letter from Tom Mauser. He and Linda had chosen not to take part in
lawsuits many of their peers leveled against the Harrises and Klebolds.
But they were just as hungry for answers. Eventually, Tom's frustration
boiled over. All those years and he still didn't know how the boys got
away with it. And resentment had set in: Why hadn't the parents reached
out more? So he set down some pointed questions. That approach failed.
The Harrises declined to meet, though their attorney provided some
answers.

So then Tom Mauser wrote to Sue Klebold, who met with him. Sue was
very apologetic, but had no surprises. He didn't push too hard. Linda
stayed home. What an emotional undertaking. Looking those people in the
eye-was she ready for that? Would she offer forgiveness? Withhold it?
Linda wasn't prepared to wrestle with all that, especially with the
wrong family. It wasn't her kid that killed my son, she says. It was
Eric.

Columbine. By Dave Cullen. 464 Pages. Twelve. $15.99. Linda had been
struggling with grief since Daniel's murder, but recently made a
breakthrough in therapy: She began telling people what she really
thought. She channeled that new expressiveness toward a solution:
writing a followup to the Harrises in early 2009. She wrote warmly: no
demands, just how she felt. Honestly, she felt conflicted. She wasn't
sure what Wayne and Kathy had done. But she was decided on Eric. She
forgave him.

Word came back slowly from the attorney: Would they like to meet? Yes.

Approximately 10 years and four months after Eric Harris murdered
their child, Linda and Tom drove into Denver to greet his parents. The
Harrises declined to comment on the meeting. These are Linda's
impressions.

They met at the Quaker Meeting House, where their attorney was a
member. It was a sunny room with wooden floors and benches. The Harrises
greeted them with a basket of flowers. Wayne spoke first. Nice to meet
you. He smiled and reached for Linda's hand. Thanks for coming, she
said. They sat down in a quiet alcove.

Wayne did most of the talking. He is a retired Air Force major and
sounded like one, careful and precise in his language. He was tall, but
slight and avuncular, like a friendly neighbor.

Wayne was mystified by his son. Wayne and Kathy accepted that Eric was
a psychopath. Where that came from, they didn't know. But he fooled
them, utterly.

He'd also fooled a slew of professionals. Wayne and Kathy clearly felt
misled by the psychologist they sent him to. The doctor had

Evidence is mounting that Chinese sales of US Treasury bonds over recent
months are intended as a warning shot to Washington over escalating
political disputes rather than being part of a routine portfolio shift
as thought at first.

A front-page story in the state's China Information News said the record
$34 billion sale of US bonds in December was a commendable move. The
article was republished by the National Bureau of Statistics, giving it
a stronger imprimatur.

It follows a piece last week in China Daily, the Politburo's voice,
citing an official from the Chinese Academy of Sciences praising the
move to slash holdings of US debt. This was published on the same day
that US President Barack Obama received the Dalai Lama at the White
House, defying protests from Beijing.

There are ongoing spats between the US and China on so many fronts so
you have to assume that this is some sort of implicit threat, said Neil
Mellor, a currency expert at the Bank of New York Mellon, who cautioned
that it can be hard to read the complex signals from China.

We still think China will have to continue buying US Treasuries by the
bucket load. Where else can they invest in a liquid market? The euro has
become a tarnished currency, he said.

China's power is growing so fast that it now feels confident enough to
raise the stakes on a string of festering conflicts with the US. It has
threatened to impose sanctions on any US firm that takes part in a $6.4
billion arms deal for Taiwan agreed by the White House. This is a
tougher response that on any previous occasion and raises the _spectre
of a trade war over Boeing, the key supplier_.

Chinese leaders are deploying their reserves to try to pressure the US
to stop haranguing China about its currency and trade policies, and to
back off from interference in its domestic issues, said professor Eswar
Prasad, former head of the IMF's China division.

Stephen Jen from BlueGold Capital said Chine is probably moving out of
bonds from many countries as it prepares for a likely 5 percent
revaluation of its currency in coming weeks. Other assets might prove
better protection against an immediate loss on holdings

Use of China's $2.4 trillion reserves to challenge US foreign policy is
fraught with problems, not least because any damage to America will
recoils immediately against China -- which depends on the US market for
its mercantilist growth strategy. _Beijing cannot stop accumulating
dollars unless it is willing to let the yuan ride, eroding the margins
of its export industry. _Some reserves can be parked in gold or even
copper, but liquid commodity markets are not big enough to absorb the
scale of Chinese surpluses.

China and America are locked together by fate. Any petulant action by
either side involves a degree of mutual assured destruction. But
sometimes in politics -- as in life -- emotion flies out of control.

Yes, that's the last Columbine mystery I'm interested in, if I can have
the
NATO officer MK tour aspect before that. Dad wrote the trenchcoat
manual,
son made the video; no conflict there that I can see. Just plain old
oligarchy
mazzini gangers shaking us down every which way.

The bully had also graduated the year before, so maybe bullying was not
the reason why. Or if it was, the script was written the year before and
the media kept to it!?

The thing about the Fuselier kid graduating the year before is that his
whereabouts still ought to be accounted for, like GHWB 11-22-63. The
internet rumor I heard is that his whereabouts are unaccounted for,
but, they initially would be, until questions were asked and...what?
Maybe the NATO officers know what the new MK models can do,
dollar for dollar, compared to the old Matrix gamegunboys.

Yes, in Chesapeake, there was something there covered up. Virginia Pilot
covered it and it disappeared.
But what do we do about Cassius? And the group?
The real leadership must simply go along with Cassius and Brutus and the
others of the senate league. Or get whacked. Bodies of Caesars will pile
to the Nile til gunboats of peasants get dressed up in style.

In a more serious tone:
Sites like this and alternate media have begun to bring out horrors that
were considered standard but not public. Public is still in tv trance.
Brutus types and Cassius types are also still in a quandary. What can be
done? Revolutions of all types set history back. This is a slow plod to
change. Alas, it will pass, but boils on the ass.

The only reason that the musical 'Kismet' has not been through a revival
on Broadway is that in many respects little has changed in Baghdad. Or
here.

[cia-drugs] The Road to Armageddon

2010-02-26 Thread homepulse

The Road to Armageddon

Paul Craig Roberts
February 25, 2010

The Washington Times is a newspaper that looks with favor upon the
Bush/Cheney/Obama/neocon wars of aggression in the Middle East and favors
making terrorists pay for 9/11. Therefore, I was surprised to learn on
February 24 that the most popular story on the paper's website for the past
three days was the Inside the Beltway report, Explosive News, about the
31 press conferences in cities in the US and abroad on February 19 held by
Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, an organization of professionals
which now has 1,000 members.

I was even more surprised that the news report treated the press conference
seriously.

How did three World Trade Center skyscrapers suddenly disintegrate into fine
dust? How did massive steel beams in three skyscrapers suddenly fail as a
result of short-lived, isolated, and low temperature fires? A thousand
architects and engineers want to know, and are calling on Congress to order
a new investigation into the destruction of the Twin Towers and Building 7,
reports the Washington Times.

The paper reports that the architects and engineers have concluded that the
Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Institute of Standards
and Technology provided insufficient, contradictory and fraudulent accounts
of the circumstances of the towers' destruction and are calling for a
grand jury investigation of NIST officials.

The newspaper reports that Richard Gage, the spokesperson for the architects
and engineers said: Government officials will be notified that 'Misprision
of Treason,' U.S. Code 18 (Sec. 2382) is a serious federal offense, which
requires those with evidence of treason to act. The implications are
enormous and may have profound impact on the forthcoming Khalid Sheik
Mohammed trial.

There is now an organization, Firefighters for 9/11 Truth. At the main press
conference in San Francisco, Eric Lawyer, the head of that organization,
announced the firefighters' support for the architects and engineers'
demands. He reported that no forensic investigation was made of the fires
that are alleged to have destroyed the three buildings and that this failure
constitutes a crime.

Mandated procedures were not followed, and instead of being preserved and
investigated, the crime scene was destroyed. He also reported that there are
more than one hundred first responders who heard and experienced explosions
and that there is radio, audio and video evidence of explosions.

Also at the press conference, physicist Steven Jones presented the evidence
of nano-thermite in the residue of the WTC buildings found by an
international panel of scientists led by University of Copenhagen
nano-chemist Professor Niels Harrit. Nano-thermite is a high-tech
explosive/pyrotechnic capable of instantly melting steel girders.

Before we yell conspiracy theory, we should be aware that the architects,
engineers, firefighters, and scientists offer no theory. They provide
evidence that challenges the official theory. This evidence is not going to
go away.

(ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)

If expressing doubts or reservations about the official story in the 9/11
Commission Report makes a person a conspiracy theory kook, then we have to
include both co-chairmen of the 9/11 Commission and the Commission's legal
counsel, all of whom have written books in which they clearly state that
they were lied to by government officials when they conducted their
investigation, or, rather, when they presided over the investigation
conducted by executive director Philip Zelikow, a member of President George
W. Bush's transition team and Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and a
co-author of Bush Secretary of State Condi Mushroom Cloud Rice.

There will always be Americans who will believe whatever the government
tells them no matter how many times they know the government has lied to
them. Despite expensive wars that threaten Social Security and Medicare,
wars based on non-existent Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, non-existent
Saddam Hussein connections to al Qaida, non-existent Afghan participation in
the 9/11 attacks, and the non-existent Iranian nukes that are being hyped as
the reason for the next American war of aggression in the Middle East, more
than half of the U.S. population still believes the fantastic story that the
government has told them about 9/11, a Muslim conspiracy that outwitted the
entire Western world.

Moreover, it doesn't matter to these Americans how often the government
changes its story. For example, Americans first heard of Osama bin Laden
because the Bush regime pinned the 9/11 attacks on him. Over the years video
after video was served up to the gullible American public of bin Laden's
pronouncements. Experts dismissed the videos as fakes, but Americans
remained their gullible selves. Then suddenly last year a new 9/11
mastermind emerged to take bin
