The easiest thing is to use Synaptic to manage your software packages. So
if you have downloaded Cinelerra, it might be sitting on your system
somewhere. I would first go to Synpatic, click the reload button, click the
search button, type in cinelerra, then uninstall cinelerra if you have it
installed (be sure to mark it for complete removal), and then once again
type cinelerra in the Search box, and re-install cinelerra. All of this is
very simple to do with the Synaptic GUI. Synaptic will set all of your
dependencies and install the program, and then you can launch Cinelerra by
going to your applications tab and navigating to Sound & Video or Mulitmedia
(I'm on a Xubuntu box at the moment, so I don't have a GNOME GUI to look at
to give you detailed directions).

I think that this is an excellent idea, and IMHO, the footage from the
Digital Tipping Point would be perfect for this project. We have 350 hours
of footage in 11 languages from 6 nations about why FOSS is important for
the world, and how the example of sharing will spread from FOSS to other
areas of human life, such as music, movies, government, and even sex and
other areas of life. We have interviewed some of the top politicians,
business people, journalists, and software developers in the world
pertaining to FOSS. Our cast list is here:

http://www.digitaltippingpoint.com/?q=node/8

We have filmed many dignitaries such as Christian Ude (the Mayor of Munich),
Hermann-Josef Pelgrim (the Mayor of Schwaebisch Hall), Gilberto Gil (the
Culture Minister of Brazil), and Luiz Millan Vazquez de Miguel, (the
Extremaduran Minister of Science, Education). The theme of our film is that
Free Open Source Software (FOSS) will help foster an explosion of literacy
and creativity globally. As far as I know, our film is the first feature
length documentary about FOSS to be built using all FOSS tools, on-line, out
of fully forkable footage released under a Creative Commons
Attribute-ShareAlike license on the Internet Archive. Please correct me if
I am not correct about this, because there are obviously lots of great films
being produced by people here on this list and elsewhere.

We have 54 hours so far loaded onto the Internet Archive's Digital Tipping
Point Video Collection. You can see our raw video here:

 http://www.archive.org/details.php?identifier=digitaltippingpoint

That footage is raw footage, and will need to be re-rendered before it is
used in any final project. It is also much more poorly lighted than you are
used to, and the audio is also only on one channel, to reduce overhead. As
I mentioned, we have been to 6 nations and 3 continents on a shoe string
budget, and so we didn't have the resources to drag lighting equipment
along. We shot everything with a Sony PD-170, which is a decent pro-sumer
piece of equipment.

Our keyword search index page is located below. It is the place to go to
find specific persons or themes for our footage. The Internet Archive is
currently changing its search software, and so the index might not be
operational again until Friday, December 7, 2007. Here is the index page
nonetheless:

http:// tinyurl.com/yluwoc <http://tinyurl.com/yluwoc>

People will probably need the raw .dv footage, and I am willing to discuss
how it might be possible for us to make that available to everyone.

This is exactly what we are hoping to do with the Digital Tipping Point
film. We would like to make our first film a collection of viewpoints from
different directors in different languages.

This kind of collaboration is exactly what we are trying to accomplish with
the Digital Tipping Point.

Thanks for this info. I am using openSUSE 10.2 to complete the Digital
Tipping Point documentary, which is a documentary about how FOSS is changing
global culture. The film is an open source project that is being completed
in a transparent, open source fashion, and we are attempting to use only
FOSS tools. So this thread is extraordinarily important to me. Daniel, I
will be watching the outcome of your issues with keen interest, so please do
post here if you resolve your issues. I am basically going to hold off
installing 10.3 until I hear from you or someone else on this list as to how
this issue gets resolved.

I had it working lovely on 10.2 and RPMS were provided through packman.

Were those the repositories that were recommended on the openSUSE site? If
I understand correctly, the preferred repositories are listed on that site.

Now, I can get it to compile fine from the SVN version, but when it opens

I guess that this is the issue. It has been so long since I last installed
CinelerraCV that I don't remember if I compiled it from source or just
downloaded the binaries.

It doesn't work at all. I have to kill the program. This happens when I

Good luck and please do keep us posted !

Also I would invite anyone who wants to either use our video or contribute
to the Digital Tipping Point video project to contact me here or off list.
We are planning to "compile" our film from the "source" provided by 5 to 10
"module" directors, each of whom will create stories from our footage (and
their own original footage, if so desired) and have the Digital Tipping
Point be a montage of these modules. Our footage lives here on the Internet
Archive's Digital Tipping Point Video Collection (IA DTP VC):

 http://www.archive.org/details.php?identifier=digitaltippingpoint

That footage is raw footage, and will need to be re-rendered before it is
used in any final project. But that is normal. Most directors will use
software to change the appearance of footage before it goes final.

Our keyword search index page is located below. It is the place to go to
find specific persons or themes for our footage.

Again, good luck with that openSUSE 10.3 issue !

Why did you leave out -o ? For example, why not:

ffmpeg -i flie.ogg -o file.mpg?

Also, someone else suggested that I do this:

ffmpeg -i mansour.ogg -target pal-dvd mansour.mpg

Again, I am noticing that there is no -o here. Why is that? Also, I am in

NTSC later.

I thought that ffmpeg2theora was only for encoding into .ogg, not from .ogg
to .mpg. Was I wrong?

Also, I thought that transcode calls mencoder.

Our film project is very international in scope. In fact, one of the main
themes of our film is that Free Software will be part of a shift in the
balance of trade / power / culture centers away from the US and toward
Europe, South America, and Asia, unless the US learns to adopt Free Software
at a more rapid rate. The US currently is in Microsoft's grip, and I
believe that the relationship between the US and Microsoft could actually
harm the US economy and US culture. We have 11 different languages in our
film, and we will need some help from native French speakers if we are going
to include our French-language footage. Among others, we interviewed
Christophe Cazin and Christian Hardy, two French political / technical
leaders about the use of Free Software in France. All of our footage
pertaining to France can be found at this link:

hi,

I need a little help transcoding IL'dar AKHmetgaleev's excellent short

failed both under Edgy Kubuntu and openSUSE 10.2. I am actually kind of

BTW, I have standardized on Edgy Kubuntu, and can't move, for a wide variety

The Internet Archive does indeed build dedicated collections to projects
such as the Digital Tipping Point:

http://archive.org/details/digitaltippingpoint

The advantage of putting your work up on the Archive is that you get high
res, free hosting forever, plus a dedicated team to keep the server up, plus
an awesome indexing feature:

http://tinyurl.com/yluwoc

There are a few drawbacks to the Archive. One, they are not as heavily
trafficked as YouTube. Two, they have not built in mechanisms for form a
community, such as with YouTube. Three, the service is available only from
the US, as the Archive didn't want to have to deal with copyright laws
outside the US.

But overall, the Archive is a great service!

True, this is a really wonderful, awesome portrait of a very interesting and
very talented man. I understand no Russian, but I was still very engaged in
the film. I would love to see it subtitled. I would also like to add it to
the Internet Archive's Digital Tipping Point Video Collection (IA DTP VC)
both as it is, and also then update it if Akhil plans to put English
subtitles to it. The Digital Tipping Point Video Collection has 11
different languages, I believe, although I'm not sure how many languages are
currently posted to the collection. We have 51 hours posted to the
collection, but if it is okay with you, Akhil, I would like to post this
video of your father to the IA DTP VC under a cc by sa license, which I
believe is the same license that you are using.

If you will allow us to post this video to the collection, Akhil, it would
be great if you could type up a short summary of this video, telling us a
bit about the film; a bit about your father; a bit about why you chose to do
this film, and what tools you used, from your camera to any lighting you
used to the list of software applications you used. Please also be sure to
include the year it was shot (2007 presumably) and the nearest geographical
landmark where it was shot, such as the nearest town or whatever other name
you prefer (since it was shot in a rural setting). Even the name a small
town is okay. Whatever you would prefer to help people find the place on an
on-line map such as Google maps.

Yes, I thought that this effect was particularly spectacular, simply because
it was so very well integrated into the fabric of the film. This really
was a splendid effort Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

If you will allow us to post your video to the IA DTP VC, it will live here
with our own footage. Our footage there is only raw footage now, but our
finished product will be released there, and we are hoping to put other
artists finished work there as well.

well as the town, etc.

Thanks for your consideration of my request!

[CinCVS] Is anyone on this list coming to LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco next week?

2007-08-01 Thread Christian Einfeldt
hi,

I live and work in San Francisco, California, US, and I am wondering if
anyone on this list will be coming to San Francisco next week, or any time
in the next 7 months. I know that most of the people on this list are
outside the US, and I know that LinuxWorld has become very corporate, but
still some people sometimes come to LinuxWorld to meet people outside the
actual LinuxWorld Expo.

Re: [CinCVS] Small interview/documentary

2007-08-01 Thread Christian Einfeldt
e is
helping me to imagine this dream. I know that there are others who have
done similarly good work with Cinelerra, but I am very new to this list and
very new to Cinelerra, so in many ways, Camille's piece will remain forever
in my mind as the first piece that I saw completed with Cinelerra. For that
reason, her work will always be very special to me.

By the way, in the US, Camille is a woman's name. My apologies if Camille
is a man.

Scott, thanks for this info. One of the members of the Digital Tipping
Point crew is going to be coming over to my office tonight to see if we can
address this issue under openSUSE. I am in the process of downloading Edgy
Kubuntu, because everything is working on my ServerBeast box under Edgy
Kubuntu, and so maybe it is an issue with Edgy versus openSUSE 10.2

I'll update you! Thanks, Scott!

[CinCVS] can't capture video under SUSE Linux 10.2

2007-07-13 Thread Christian Einfeldt

hi

I am trying to capture an interview with Richard Stallman (yay!) from a
miniDV tape on a SUSE 10.2 64 bit box from a professional DSR-45 deck. Here
is the command and the output:

linux-athlon64x2:/home/cje/capturedDV/031 # dvgrab --format raw
dv999_stallman_kipp
raw1394 - failed to get handle: No such file or directory.

I have tried this command both as root and from my user account. Same error
message.

I have tested the tape and the cable and the tape deck by successfully
capturing footage from an Edgy Kubuntu box.

The SUSE 10.2 box has 2 GB of RAM and a dual core processor with an AMD 3800
chip. Horsepower is not the issue here.

I have not pulled the firewire card to see if it is okay. That will be the
next step, as soon as I can get another firewire card. In the meantime, I
am wondering if I missed anything.

By the way, we do have 45 hours of video footage that we are sharing with
the world under a cc by-SA license, if you ever need interview footage with
FOSS leaders. You can see our raw video here:

I had so much trouble installing Cinelerra under Edgy Ubuntu that I had to
install a second hard drive in my computer and install SUSE 10.2 on it,
because Cinelerra is simple to install with the openSUSE repositories. All
the repositories you need are right there on the openSUSE site. I do like
Edgy Ubuntu a lot, and I still use it for lots of different aspects of
producing the Digital Tipping Point film. But this one aspect of Edgy was
troublesome.

I actually also downgraded from Feisty to Edgy, due to problems that I was
having running some video packages on Feisty. I don't remember which ones,
sorry. So maybe downgrading from Feisty to Edgy will solve a few of your
problems as well.
