[CinCV] NTFS Partitions
So I got my new laptop (thanks Hermanrfor the advice) and I'd like to set it up as a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu(studio). I need Windows in order to run several things, most important is Redcine so I can convert Red files to something cinelerra (eventually Lumiera...) will be able to read. What I would like to do is set up the hard drive with a partition for Vista, a partition for Ubuntustudio, and a NTFS common partition for the shared video files. I've read conflicting reports about Ubuntu being able to read and write to NTFS, but I'd really like to be able to use it due to the large file size of the HD, 2k and 4k files. Any suggestions, problems or cautions? Thanks, -Jay ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra

> isn't the best word. how about "old dogs" who can't learn new tricks? Don't make that judgement. Just because I've learned and edited on at least a dozen NLEs doesn't mean I'm unwilling to learn new software. It means quite the opposite. I've cut on lot's of systems, right now I cut on Avid and FCP. I'm buying a new system soon that's going to be Ubuntu so I can learn Cin. I've also cut on imovie, and as a professional, I would never consider using that interface to start a project, be it commercial or feature. > don't mean to be name calling, just seems proposterous that adding a > feature from imovie would scare away "professionals" I have no apprehensions to adding features, in fact the more options the better! I am for example interested in using a more "Nodal" type approach such as employed by the Smoke or Flint workflow. As long as it's an option. I would thing it would be a mistake to take what is a very powerful timeline and reduce it to the simplicity of the imovie interface. Again as an option, cool - let's see it. But as the main approach, I would hope not. > and no offense to jay, I was just being silly but its hard to tell > maybe because google can't translate sarcasm yet! [CinCV] Re: thumbnail based renderless
Oh goodness gracious the last thing I would want is for the developers of Lumiera to model the new editor after imovie! If that is what beginners need or what, then perhaps as an optional interface fine. It is certainly not anywhere near professional, and would in fact scare away any professional editor. Most of my timelines end up looking like this (avid): http://bp2.blogger.com/_IOr751U0Yag/Rflz4mfx1XI/ACI/dRY8iylGh-A/s1600-h/timeline.gif Again, I'm not saying it should't be an option, but please, please, please try to keep it pro. BTW, I also second user selectable thumbnail points. Something like 1st frame, 3rd frame, 1/2way in, etc would be brilliant. _ Northern/Southern California Producer/DP website: www.emrl.com/j e-mail: cinejay(at)emrl.com blog: www.jaytruesdale.blogspot.com _ ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra

[CinCV] Linux noob suggestions
So after lurking here for a while, I've decided to take the plunge and go linux. With the status of Ubuntu 8.04, I'd like to try and set up a Cinelerra (and eventually Lumiera) edit system. I have an aging XP Avid system at home and a FCP system at work. The trouble I that I don't have a clue about linux. I'm wondering if there is anyone on the list who might be willing to help advise me on what purchases would be best. I know there is a lot of tweaking that may be needed to get a system to work. My next computer has to be a laptop (I've got a teaching job) and it will have to be dual-boot windows. My concerns right now are: AMD (Turon TL-60) vs Intel chips And Nvidia vs ATI graphics. My budget is capped at $600, here are three models I am looking at: http://shop3.outpost.com/product/5585790 (Toshiba) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8776149&type=product&id=1204332255236 (HP) http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/101500/HP-Pavilion-dv6810us-Widescreen-Notebook-Computer/ Any suggestions would be welcome. I just don't want to spend the money on a laptop and have it be incompatible. I also don't want to hog space on this mailing list, so feel free to respond off list or perhaps we could carry this over on #cinelerra or perhaps if there are any locals to the Sacramento area (librt?) This is why I suggest using focus testing. Properly done, the data will transcend personal biases and help give a clear indication of what the unbiased consumer will think. I suggest narrowing the selections down to 6-10 choices, and conduct focus testing. Once the data is in, then an informed decision can be made. Until then, it's a bit of guessing in the dark. As for names being taken by other business, I would not worry too much about that, and think of the name in context ie: An NLE software. If it's a concern of the domain name being taken, then just do what the movie studios do ie: cloverfield-the-movie only just call it X-nle.com, or whatever. People aren't idiots. A google search for X and non-linear edit will surely turn up the proper result, especially if there is enough buzz about the product. There was great discussion when Nissan spun off a car company called infinity. Everyone was talking about how there would be confusion with the infinity speaker company. Well, there has been none. It's different when the product is taken in context of it's use. At any rate, it's exciting to watch the development! -Jay Truesdale ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra

Agreed. Firefox especially is probably the most successful example. The quintessential example would be a recent product that by buzzworthy name and capability alone (almost advertising) has taken the film production world by storm. Their name dominates the buzz talk, and it meets all four of the successful naming criteria: (Differentiation, Inspirational, Easy to pronounce, and Easy on the Ears.) [CinCVS] Cinelerra Branding Considerations
inclusion of the word free. People are skeptical of anything free, and it doesn't position the product as being better or more powerful than the competition. (Which it is! 64Bit 1080p render farm capability for the price point - holey cow!) VeriteCV- I'd leave off the CV. Nobody outside the open community knows what the hell a CV is, and at the first impression, it's way too much effort to educate them. By the time you have, you've lost them. You should have been educating them about the product positioning. As for Verite. It's good and evocative. It's a little weird to spell for Americans, but it's got a good sound to it. It ties into the film community and has instant meaning to anyone who has been to film school. Side note... I'd want to focus group test this one, because for myself Cinema Verite has a negative connotation. For me it usually means a wanna-be film maker who is too lazy to use a tripod and proper lighting. Cinema Verite is why God invented Garret Brown. Just my personal opinion... Free Cut Pro This name could be dangerous. While I see it positioning itself as a free version of FCP, It could be seen as an imitator rather than an innovator. This does not differentiate the product from the competition, rather it mimics it. This also references the word free, which carries negative baggage as mentioned above. I will admit that it's not easy to come up with names that work, all the obvious ones are taken, so you do have to dig, and keep an open mind. Here are some suggestions: Cineplex. This looks and sounds good, although I'm not sure if it has positive or negative connotation. It's ok. Razor Razor Wire Both of these look and sound good. They also carry connotations of edginess They also work on several levels. One word or caution, do not dismiss the word based on association to the toy razor scooter. When considering branding, one thing to think about is context, and when used in context of packaging, advertising, or word of mouth discussion, the context will nullify any association. Focus testing will bear this out. Purely evocative names can be powerful. Think of the new Chocolate cell phone, or the Discrete's Smoke, or the SGI Oxygen machine. Try to picture these names in context pictured on the start screen, or referenced in discussion of a recent feature film. Here they are: Saturn Orion Iridium Tritium. Each of those carry positive connotations. They are vaguely inspirational. For purely evocative names, I like these. Some of my colleagues suggested Next Edit or X Edit, both of which are taken. One is a video editor, the other is a Unix editor. One idea is to simply call it X NLE, but brand it as X. It's bold, evocative, simple and really stands out. It clearly meets the 4 branding considerations very well. Sorry for the length of my rant, but the development of Cinelerra is at a critical point, and branding is something that deserves great consideration. It needs to have a buzz worthy name, if the product itself is going to take off. My recommendation is to narrow the selection list down and do focus testing, then using the results, choose the strongest name. I'd also recommend not to make too quick of a decision, a working project name will suffice until the release just remember to change it (Video Toaster...ugh!) Sorry for the length of this rant, promise it won't happen again! ok sorry for not writing back sooner.. i had to go work.. ok so here are the evolucion to the problem.. the videos i captured with dvgrab closes cinelerra. .avi that i captured or exported with kino imports "blank" or empty. ie the file gets imported and appears in the list of rources but later doesnt contain niether video nor audio. i export a .dv from kino and this does work fine. but on the play back there is a delay in the video 2007/4/13, el_jay <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: from the command prompt with out any parameters Martin Ellison wrote: > No, I mean, what steps exactly do you follow up to the point of the > crash? Re: [CinCVS] keyboard question
lol.. yes i agree.. but the thing is that most other editing systems have standared keyboard setting that i have more than memorized.. and with cinelerra i find myself having to re-learn the shortcuts. so what i wanted to do was find a way to import the avid standared into cinelerra... and trust i have trying to push cinelerra in madrid, and will now start offering a video workshop that uses cinelerra as its editng system.. butone of the things that makes people a bit weary of using the program is that the keyboard shortcuts arnt the same as the other programas editors are acstumed to work with. i think that if this problem gets resolved it would break the ice to get a lot of "profesionales" to make the switch. 2007/3/6, Marcin Kostur <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Learn defaults! My 3 cents: Few years ago i always was changing default to my custom key-setting on everything (emacs binding in firefox etc). It was really a hassle, at each new installation or at each foregin system i had to work i did a bunch of mistakes. With cinelerra - i did not like mouse button -setting and i changed them. Then It went 1.2->2.0, few version and i never knew what i set up. Now i alway (really always) learn "default" setting for any system (inc. cin. mouse). I have no problem using emacs kayboard, and few minutes later "windows copy/paste" in thunderbird. Usually defaults are not that bad and i am "upgrade" ready, what is bleeding edge era is quite important ;-) the best Marcin ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra
