[CinCV] Gentoo package renamed (cinelerra-cvs - cinelerra)

2008-06-24 Thread Hanno Böck
Hi,

The gentoo package of cinelerra community version was named cinelerra-cvs in
the past. As it's no longer cvs and original cinelerra (hv version) has
been removed long time ago, we've now renamed the package to plain cinelerra.

All documentation mentioning the package should be updated, e.g. on the
webpage,
 emerge cinelerra-cvs
should be replaced by
 emerge cinelerra
(from http://www.cinelerra.org/getting_cinelerra.php#gentoo)

I'm not comfortable with this. We have a different name for a reason.
But it's not different enough, obviously. Time to get a brand new name?

We had a discussion about that (and cinelerra-cv was suggested), but for me,
two reasons spoke for cinelerra:
a) other distros use this name as well
b) cinelerra community version is the only cinelerraversion maintained today.
I want people to get something when they type in emerge cinelerra

I think it´s more usefull... a little bit late for me because of my previous
problem with it, but thinking about future situations, i think it's
better...

It is not better, because technically you are using a copyrighted name for
something that is not that name.

  Names cannot be copyrighted.

Dutch law disagrees on that. Everything anyone can think of falls on the
respectable private copyright laws. So if you think of a cool name in
combination with a specific function. That name + that function are
owned by you, if you were the first.

trademark != copyright

Is Cinelerra registered as trademark by Heroinewarrior?

 Dutch law disagrees on that.

Trademark law differs between jurisdictions. But my main concern
is not what the laws say, but whether we are fair and clear.

Appointing cinelerra-cv to be the new upstream, just like that,
without Heroines' explicit consent, is nasty.
