The problem on my system was that dvgrab's default buffer size was too small (100). Using dvgrab --buffers 500 took care of it no matter how much else I was doing at the same time. If you're capturing with cinelerra, perhaps there is a similar solution. dvgrab 2.0. grabbing from cinelerra is not working ;-( Hm, buffers, I have to try that. Thanx. Because on my system, if I launch a CPU consuming task, the burning process can stops for some 1/10th of a second. Since my DVD must be perfectly readable (I don't want to see any return), I then decided to do nothing else than burning my DVD and... looking at the TV with my DVB tuner card. My DVD burner is a Plextor PX-716A IDE, and I burn the DVD with that command: nice -n -20 growisofs -dvd-compat -speed=2 -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-video -V VIDEO ./ && eject /dev/cdrom Nicolas. ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra

BTW, that's the same for burning DVD. If you want to be SURE the DVD are perfectly burn, I have to do nothing except burning on my computer. I burn at 4x speed only. Huh?? I've burnt 2 DVD disks at once on my computer (using 2 dvd burners) and didn't really have any problems.. Given that you can buy tower DVD duplicators that duplicate 3 disks at once, I was wondering why linux isn't able to do it either.. but, I guess it shouldn't be recommended.. :) ___ Cinelerra mailing list Cinelerra@skolelinux.no https://init.linpro.no/mailman/skolelinux.no/listinfo/cinelerra

Well, Such error messages happens when you run CPU-consuming tasks while grabbing. Last time that happened on my computer, I was watching a video on video.google. That consumed only 1 CPU on my system, but that was sufficient to get some frame-drops. That's why, when I grab DV, I read Slashdot and wait for the grab to finish. ;-) Anyway, unless you have tons of tapes to grab, that's not so annoying. I grabbed the 2 tapes need for project in 2 hours. And I already spent 100+ hours with cinelerra editing the video. I really prefer to do not touch my computer while grabbing, than having some frame drops... BTW, that's the same for burning DVD. If you want to be SURE the DVD are perfectly burn, I have to do nothing except burning on my computer. I burn at 4x speed only. The throughput on Linux seems to be rather odd in the 2.6 series of the kernel. Is preemption on in your kernel? Some people from the V4L list noticed that the 2.4 series has got much higher PCI througputspeed than 2.6. Now I don't have decided yet to go back to 2.4 for my embedded systems if the difference is that big or stay and fix the issue. But it is a thing to consider. [CinCVS] dv grabbing (off topic)
Hi This is not exactly cinelerra question, but cinelerra users could face it. the problem is with grabing (dvgrab 2.0) from miniDV camcorder to hdd. Everything works fine until I do nothing with my linux box. when I resise, minimize, move window frame drops accures (only one at a time). My system is Athlon 64, 1GB ram, kernel 2.6.15.4. Well, it is strange, it simply behavies like windows in the past days of first CD burners: don't touch my, I'm buning. error message: frame dropped: timecode 00:25:27.10 date 2006.09.04 09:42:59 This error means that the ieee1394 driver received an incomplete frame. .
