No-no, please see the mail from Raffaella; that's the way we'll do it.
Also, look at the bottom of the pipawiki, the process is detailed
there, I'll paste it in:

# Narrow down the number of names from 261 to no more than 50.
# Core-devs checks the list, veto the unacceptable names and move back
their pet names if deleted.
# List precisely all the criteria.
# Order the criteria by importance and assign a progressive number: 0
is the value of the less important.
# IRC people check the criteria list.
# Apply all the criteria to every name, marking it 0, 1 or 2. 0 if the
criterion is not met.
# Get a score for every name by multiplying the mark for the criterion
value and making the sum.
# IRC people check the marking.
# Collect the 10/15 names with the highest marks and organize a
popularity contest at the beginning of March, on a wiki (preferably on
the Dokuwiki with the poll plugin)
# Announce the contest on the Mailing List.
# The name will be decided at the next IRC developer meeting on 6 March.

SELF-REPLY

well, it seems we need a way to vote, right?

maybe we can do this way:

1) have a look at wiki, were all proposal were collected (and/or add
your new proposal)

http://pipapo.org/pipawiki/Cinelerra3/Names

2) vote

Which way we can vote?

maybe simply, sending a mail to the list with subject "name" or so

:D

enjoy da day

We can start 10 day vote for new name and we can finally stop this
thread! ;P

offers the 70+ names, then asks you to vote on

where only older options are listed

No Lumierra, for example...

BTW, to dooteo, I edited your line because lumierra.org is registered,

There are some options how we can decide on a name. Whats important to
me is that people which are involved can veto which names they don't
like (nobody wants to work on a prokect which name he doesn't like).
Voting would then be ok after this veto'ed names got removed from the
list, otherwise I set the nameing on the agenda for the next
OpenVideoDeveloper meeting on 6.th march where we will decide when
nothing happend earlier (so just go on!). We will talk about the nameing
next days on the LAC in colonge too (who else besides hermanr, oracle
and me is there).

Linux MCE is based on mythtv and many distros include mythtv.

There are patent issues in relation to codecs, particularly MPEG codecs.

Read the licenses at this site: http://www.mpegla.com/

This sort of stuff sits pretty close to the metal. I definitely
wouldn't expect a turnkey video distro this early in the game. The
tools simply aren't mature enough for that yet. Don't get me wrong,
great work can be done, but IMO it's not quite ready for mass
consumption.

Ubuntu Studio is designed for media *production*. LinuxMCE is not
really a production tool, per se. It's for media consumption, so makes
complete sense that it's not included in a production distribution.

[CinCVS] Why not Linux out-of-box video environments?

2007-05-21 Thread Terje J. Hanssen
I've wondered why not the main Linux distros do provide out-of-box
complete and optimized DV and HDV editing environments (from camcorder
to DVD and BD), especially as far as this isn't a trivial end user task
on Linux.

Ubuntu Studio may be a careful beginning, but I had waited a much more
progressive offensive. Why isn't i.e LinuxMCE included to compete with
Windows MC and the upcoming Home server is one typical question.

Are there unclear GPL and license issues that prohibit them to do and
distribute this?

I've heard that to generate a mpeg file one should pay a $2 single fee
for this licens. If this is all that must be a minor problem to overcome.

Besides, when a consumer buy i.e a Sony HDV camcorder that produce
mpeg2, I prerequsitt that Sony has covered the required mpeg license. I
think this mpeg2 then should be free to save on other media like PC hard
disk, edit native and burn to DVD/BD, still within mpeg without decoding
and encoding.
