there are two windows for viewing.
you can load single clips into the 'viewer' to view and trim.
footage loaded into the timeline is shown in the 'compositor'.

either of them can be activated in the 'Window' menu.

on the cinelerra.org website. in particular, read the fine manual:

There are two different versions of Cinelerra. The community version
(CV) and the heroinewarrior version maintained by the original author.
If you are using the later (4.1) that version has a known issue with
the viewer not working.
