Re: [CinCV] cinelerra and super8 aspect ratio

2010-03-23 Thread E Chalaron
Hi Franco

Unfortunately you wont have too many choices.
Best is to set to 4:3 and leave some black borders on top.
However depending on the original size of the frames you can fit them in
a 1280*720 for bluray authoring.
It leaves black borders on each side but unless you are filming with
some Kowa 2X or so, you wont escape it.
I started a Super8mm group on Vimeo a year ago, please join us, I think
I am the ony one doing 8 and 16 with cinelerra. :'(

I can effectively set my anamorphic DV to 16:9 in the Format window.
This affects my compositor/viewer as well my rendering.
She works quite well.

Ciao!

Cinelerra doesn't seem to export to 16:9 format.
Avidemux give the possibility when choosing 16:9 option in the video
settings part (on the left side). I guess this can be achieved from the
command line too.

No, I do think you can just edit the aspect in the settings, and
you'll see it correctly. However, such things should be perfectly
doable to fix with ffmpeg et al afterwards. You can add black lines to
make it 4:3 there if it proves hard in Cinelerra :-) It's probably
easier, because there you only do it on the whole file, whilst in
Cinelerra you might have to bother with effects on every clip.

I might be wrong though, I haven't really used Cin for other things
than fairly standard DV.

Thanks for your info Herman

By the way, don't rely on Cinelerra to set the
proper flags and parameters for aspect ratio.
The project aspect ratio setting usually only
affects the _display_ in the Compositor window.
(Don't take my word for this, check yourself.)

I don't know if this is true.
I just edit my clips with a wrong aspect ratio
(I see that it's wrong on compisitor)
and render project with the right aspect ratio seems impossibile.

I'm afraid I have to start again from the begin with the rigth apsect ratio.

Thanks to all.

I' d make a dvd keeping this aspect ratio.
Any idea about format setting and render setting?

If I recall correctly, the DVD _spec_ allows some other
aspect ratios than 16:9 and 4:3, but you can not expect
any hardware DVD players to support them.

I'm afraid you will have to choose a compromise.
1.48:1 is very close to 14:9, which is a typical
compromise ratio, rendered as 4:3 with slim black
bars. Those black bars will almost vanish outside
the screen on old-fashioned CRT TVs.

By the way, don't rely on Cinelerra to set the

The project aspect ratio setting usually only
affects the _display_ in the Compositor window.
