I would trade the PIX for a 1010 Lightstream and get a couple of 2504's.
This will give you SDN and Token Ring. Of course, if you really want to use
the ISDN, you're going to have to invest in an emulator. Teltone's are nice,
but I have an Emutel Solo, which is cheaper and more configurable.

We use DHCP at work and have been having trouble with users changing the IP
addy's to static. I logged into the router once to see who had the ARP
entry. It changed back an fourth. The user would get the IP conflict error
every time the ARP entry changed or they got leased an IP addy by the DHCP
server with another user already using it. I am not aware of any way for the
router to authenticate the ARP entry with the DHCP server so the users are
kind of stuck playing ARP pong till we reconfigure the offenders box for
DHCP or the DHCP server gives the user a new IP addy. Sometimes the users
will just do a release all and change out the NIC (or static a new MAC) to
get a new IP addy from the DHCP server. This has become more persistant as
of recent and we are trying to come up with a way to "put the smack down".

PS. the firmware on some SOHO routers is also known to cause this because
they improperly implement DHCP ie. they keep the lease longer than it's
given to them by the DHCP server without renewing it at t1 or t2.

Re: show ip route connected!! [7:11219]

2001-08-19 Thread James Harris

Is that correct? I thought that a ping to a router's own
interface would be moved across from the output queue to the
input queue on that interface - if the stack is written properly
which many ATM ones aren't. I don't think the packet will appear
out-with the router. Similarly a broadcast has to be sent to the
all-hosts address (ethernet FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF) and /also/ copied
across to the input queue. I remember reading this in one of
Douglas Comer's excellent books: I hope I remember correctly.
Anyone care to comment?

Difficulty - CCIE written or CCNP [7:16504]

Would anyone who has taken the CCNP and the CCIE written exam
care to advise which is the hardest? I hear the CCIE written
exam is very basic. It certainly covers some simple topics but
would a candidate need to know networking to CCNP level or
higher to achieve thes pass mark? Put another way, how would you
compare two people, one with CCNP and not CCIE written, the
other with the CCIE written and not CCNP?

 To:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Rich,
Try this brief lab example I got from the CCO. I think this will clear it
up
for you:
ip default-gateway
The ip default-gateway command differs from the other two commands in that
it
should only be used when ip routing is disabled on the Cisco router. For
instance, if the router is a host in the IP world, you can use this command
to define a default gateway for it. You might also use this command when
your
low end Cisco router is in boot mode in order to TFTP a Cisco IOS.Software
image to the router. In boot mode, the router doesn't have ip routing
enabled.

ip default-network
Unlike the ip default-gateway command, you can use ip default-network when
ip
routing is enabled on the Cisco router. When you configure ip
default-network
the router considers routes to that network for installation as the gateway
of last resort on the router.

For every network configured with ip default-network, if a router has a
route
to that network, that route is flagged as a candidate default route. Let's
look at the following routing table taken from a Cisco router:

2513#show ip route
Codes: C - connected, S - static, I - IGRP, R - RIP, M - mobile, B - BGP
D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area
   E1 - OSPF external type 1, E2 - OSPF external type 2, E - EGP
   i - IS-IS, L1 - IS-IS level-1, L2 - IS-IS level-2, * - candidate
default
Gateway of last resort is not set
 161.44.0.0 255.255.255.0 is subnetted, 1 subnets
C 161.44.192.0 is directly connected, Ethernet0
S198.10.1.0 [1/0] via 161.44.192.2
 131.108.0.0 255.255.255.0 is subnetted, 1 subnets
C 131.108.99.0 is directly connected, TokenRing0

Note the static route to 198.10.1.0 via 161.44.192.2 and that the gateway of
last resort isn't set. If we configure ip default-network 198.10.1.0, the
routing table changes to the following:

2513#show ip route
Codes: C - connected, S - static, I - IGRP, R - RIP, M - mobile, B - BGP
D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area
   E1 - OSPF external type 1, E2 - OSPF external type 2, E - EGP
   i - IS-IS, L1 - IS-IS level-1, L2 - IS-IS level-2, * - candidate
default

Gateway of last resort is 161.44.192.2 to network 198.10.1.0

 161.44.0.0 255.255.255.0 is subnetted, 1 subnets
C 161.44.192.0 is directly connected, Ethernet0
S 161.44.0.0 255.255.0.0 [1/0] via 161.44.192.0
S*198.10.1.0 [1/0] via 161.44.192.2
 131.108.0.0 255.255.255.0 is subnetted, 1 subnets
C 131.108.99.0 is directly connected, TokenRing0
2513#show ip protocols
2513#

We can see the gateway of last resort has now been set as 161.44.192.2. This
result is independent of any routing protocol, as shown by the show ip
protocols command at the bottom of the output.

We can add another candidate default route simply by configuring another
instance of ip default-network:

2513#config terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
2513(config)#ip route 171.70.24.0 255.255.255.0 131.108.99.2
2513(config)#ip default-network 171.70.24.0
2513(config)#^Z

C161.44.192.0 is directly connected, Ethernet0
S161.44.0.0 255.255.0.0 [1/0] via 161.44.192.0
S* 198.10.1.0 [1/0] via 161.44.192.2
171.70.0.0 is variably subnetted, 2 subnets, 2 masks
S171.70.0.0 255.255.0.0 [1/0] via 171.70.24.0
S171.70.24.0 255.255.255.0 [1/0] via 131.108.99.2
 131.108.0.0 255.255.255.0 is subnetted, 1 subnets
C131.108.99.0 is directly connected, TokenRing0

Flagging a Default Network
Note: The ip default-network command is classful, which means if the router
has a route to the subnet indicated by this command, it installs the route
to
the major net. At this point neither network has been flagged as the default
network. The ip default-network command must be issued again, using the
major
net, in order to flag the candidate default route.

2513#config terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
2513(config)#ip default-network 171.70.0.0
2513(config)#^Z

2513#show ip route
Codes: C - connected, S - static, I - IGRP, R - RIP, M - mobile, B - BGP
D - EIGRP, EX - EIGRP external, O - OSPF, IA - OSPF inter area
   E1 - OSPF

Hi Richard,

Some good CCO links have already been posted. I just wanted to add a quick

This command is useful as a tool for providing a semi dynamic default
route. For example, if you are connected to two upstream networks which
both offer you routes toward a destination, say 10/8 for example, you can
use this command to ensure that your routers chose a default route toward
the most functional of the two. For example, with normal static routes, the
route remains active so long as the immediate connectivity toward the next
hop is alive and well. Hence, should the next hop router have a failure on
one of its' upstream links, or should any other upstream routers beyond it
fail, you routers will still consider the route active and thus send traffic
toward a likely black hole. By using ip default network pointed towards
10/8, which you know is an upstream network, you can protect yourself
against any failures that deter you from reaching that network since those
failures will cause the faulty network to cease advertising 10/8 to you. In
my example, if the active next-hop for 10/8 becomes unable to deliver
traffic there, your routers will dynamic change default toward your
alternate path.

Hope that helps some :)

Pete

Certificationzone OSPF paper [7:16510]

2001-08-19 Thread richard dumoulin

Hi guys,

I am not sure to have found a contradiction in the OSPF paper from
Certificationzone.

At first, Howard writes

". The BDR hears updates being sent to the DR and starts a timer. If the
DR does not respond before the BDR timer expires, the BDR will send out the
update that the DR should have sent. Under these circumstances, however, the
BDR does not take over as DR."

But pages later he says

"OSPF updates are actually sent to a multicast address that includes
both the DR and BDR. When the BDR hears an update sent to the DR, it starts
a timer. If the DR does not respond before the BDR's timer expires, the BDR
will assume that the DR is dead and will promote itself to DR."

Do you understand my confusion ?

Cheers.

Re: Cisco Secure ACS for NT/2000 [7:16318]

2001-08-19 Thread dan snyder

So far the password changing issue is really the only limitation of ACS that
we found, but if you use it to intersect with the same database that your
desktops login to (ADS for example) then your password changes will be taken
care of.

Re: Avoiding IP conflicts in a MULTI-VLAN environment [7:16470]

2001-08-19 Thread dan snyder

as long as there are others that have the ability to connect workstations or
servers to your network, the potential is there for address conflicts. we
eliminate these by the users requesting addresses and to have server (or
workstation) patched into the network. it is more work initially, but in
the long run creates audit trails and prevents unauthorized ip address
assignments. good luck.

Possibility for Etherchannel on Serial Interfaces [7:16517]

Just a stupid question. Can I combine 2 serial interfaces using
Etherchannel?? Is there such a feature on any Cisco routers?? Please
advise. Thanks.

2001-08-19 Thread Tony Medeiros

No etherchannel, but many other different ways like:

MLPPP
CEF per packet load balancing
Regular per session or per packet load balancing.

Do a search at "cisco.google.com/cisco" for examples and limitations.
Usually I would find the links for ya but it's late and I am going to bed.
Also check the groupstudy archives. Serial link load balancing has come up
a lot in the last 6 months.
