Re: Aironet Router ......... [7:19721]

2001-09-14 Thread Avran

Aironet WAN Bridges will give you a good throughput of anywhere from 5.5 to
7.5 Mbs depending on your implementations and have been very reliable and
almost no headaches at all. Make sure you do it in the CISCO way. You may
want to invest on two pix501 if you would like to add another level of
security. You do not need any router. Bridge configuration should not take
you more than 20 minutes.

Re: Cisco moving to a one day lab? [7:6735]

2001-06-02 Thread Avran

In my opinion, CCIE's are definitely needed for the internet. What I mean
by that is cisco like all others needs people out there to setup and manage
networks. Making the exam harder and harder may make a good CCIE
candidates, however the markets usually will not wait to get the all-rounder
CCxx from Cisco. Because Ms.Juniper and Mrs.Foundry are all pushing for
people to be good at making and managing networks. The more reccomenders or
users the better sales. When you have more CCIE's and CCNP's and of course
CCNA's the more reccommenders for Cisco products. Same is the case with all
products. And as long as Cisco can back the recomender with the quality
products, there is a good future for CCIE's etc. Few years ago it was Novxx
and Microxx certification was the way to go, how ever Novxx could not back
the reccommender with quality and so may be doing the last dance now.
Microxx just understood the idea but patches for greed is yet to be
invented. Judge Jacksxx is still working on it. CCIE is only another level
of knowledge. It probably will be seen different if the standard is to have
Phd's in networking. So work hard in knowing more. Explore the unknown,
expand the known. That is the only way you will be the best in what you do.
CCIE is the best now, however what % of every CCIE does the world need.
Should they all specialize?

By the way, all the above statements are only opinions and should not be
used directly or indirectly for any decision making.

As far as this thread goes Ill put in my two cents
 worth.

Im just starting to study specifically for the written
right now having just gotten my CCNP so I am in with
those studying for the lab now (or real soon).
Personally I think Cisco could go right ahead and make
the lab as hard as they want. In all honesty I never
see the lab being as hard as the orals a 'pure
science' graduate student must take. It is only, and
will probably ever only be a technical exam and will
never even come close to the difficulty of a
theoretical examination where new ideas must digested
and expounded upon. Everyone has always known what to
study, routing and switching on cisco
hardware/software, these are not massively huge topics
as a fairly comprehensive library would only fill a
couple bookshelves. In fact I wouldnt mind if the
test was a single question 'Redesign the overall
topology of the Internet with regards to emerging
traffic patterns expounding upon different paradigms
of routing. Give specific configuration examples at
all levels of the network using any given piece of
Cisco equipment.' The current lab is not that hard
and will never be that hard, but if it was I would not
be disappointed, I would personally like such a
challenge. CCIE is not the be all and end all of
knowledge; it is just a verification of technical
skills on a small selection of platforms. If it was
made more difficult I would not begrudge anyone else
who achieved the certification before it was made
harder, I am comfortable with my skills and abilities
and really feel no need to use a paper certification
as a crutch for the future. Studying for the written
and lab though does help me to focus and explore
routing so I continue to do it. In conclusion, it
should be as hard or as easy as Cisco wants it to be,
I am confident that I will still pass no matter what
when I take the lab a year from now.

Re: SH RUN reveals encrypted password

2001-01-28 Thread Avran

I suggest that you setup password level between 2 and 14 and define them.
For example just let the user use only "show tech-support " which will hide
all config that is deemed secure. Just try the command and see.

In fact CISCO engineers suggest that you use 8 or more characters and
include underscore in your secret. This cannot be cracked easily with
software such as Loft etc.

Hope this helps.

Re: BGP - Internet Routing Architectures, Second Edition

 Group...

I was asking a lot of BGP questions on here until I bought this book
Internet Routing Architectures (Cisco Press: ISBN1-57870-233-X, by Sam
Halabi) - the second edition just came out, and it is one of the best
Cisco
press books I have read, if not the best. It really tackles the
complexties
and nuances of BGP and wraps them into one concise book... Our company is
multihomed to different providers, and the book answers my questions like
it
knew what I was looking for. I would recommend this to *anyone* thinking
of
 using BGP.

The only thing I think the book is missing is a few case studies, but
those
can be found elsewhere. The book is only $55, but I gladly would have
paid
 $110 ;)

As for the minimum reqs. for BGP, I would say a 3660 if you are going to
be
receiving full routes from your upsteam provider. (256mb max). Yes, it
will work on a 3640 with 128mb, but you aren't leaving yourself much room
for expansion on the box, traffic, or size of the routing table. One of
our
downstream customers couldn't even run BGP on their 3660 with 256mb
because
it had several active E1 links and voice ports. Your mileage may vary.
If
you can't afford better than a 3640, you seriously need to evaluate why
you
want to do full BGP anyway.

 John

Currently, Cisco ACRC material (Exam Cert Guide is a good choice) plus
additional BGP and NBMA related material concerning OSPF and EIGRP
downloaded from Cisco web site. Also Internet Routing Architectures
(Halabi,
Cisco Press) is an excellent reference for BGP.

Or, wait until relevant BSCN material is published. Your choice.
Personally
I'd wait until the Cisco material is ready, but it all depends on your
time

I had a hell of a time just acquiring the necessary info, and I took the

 Hi, guys:

Just want to let all of you know that I just passed Support 2.0
today(873),
which makes me a newly-minted CCNP. I'm happy now but somehow not like
what
I had expected. I just want to thank everybody here in the group who had
share their thoughts and expertise, it has given me lots of momentum to
keep
studying, and confidence to face tough tests.

For those who may wonder how my journey was like, here's something to
share
 with you guys...
 1)CCNA 1.0, 3/27/00
a good test in that it tests your knowledge of bacis networking, helped me
clarify some vague points in my head when I was preparing it. I got 934 on
 the test.
 2)Routing 2.0,6/19/00
Very good and fair test, I say this because I didn't read any test cram
books, I studied Jeff Dole's Routing TCP/IP and Halabi's BGP book, I think
you will be doing fine in this test if you understand the material, not
just
remember. I took a 890 on this test.
 3)Switching 2.0, 7/10/00
Again good test, I read Cisco LAN-swicthing by Kennedy Clark. I would
highly
recommend Clark's book for study of this test, it covers all the test
objectives in BCMSN. This book is good because it's easy to understand and
yet explain the difficult technology throughly. I got a 846 for this one.
 4)Remote 2.0,7/17/00
The easiest test. I focused myself on Cisco BCRAN book. That should be all
you need to pass the test. Don't forget to stduy hard on DDR, ISDN, PPP,
Frame-relay stuff I scored 875 on the test.
 5)Support 2.0,7/24/00
I think I had some difficulties to understand some of the questions in the
test. Because the wording is so strange for at least 2 Qs. But just use
your
common networking sense you will be fine, my 3 year router experience
really
helped. I just browsed through CIT book to bruch up my head for the test.
 873 on this one.

So, that's about it. I guess my next step will be CVOICE and CCIE
written.
Anyone who knows these two tests please drop me a line or two, that would
be
 greatly appreciated!!

Good luck to all of us!!!

Re: Masters degrees / distance learning

2000-07-23 Thread Avran

Lauren:

You may want to look at Webster or Nova as they offer Ms in Computer Science
and MIS as well. They both are good programs and you can take almost all
classes of Nova on the Internet. Good Luck

 Hiya,

Ive been thinking about the Masters Degree thing - I have a BSc in
Computing (communications and Networks). Im wondering about doing a
masters degree by distance learning. My old university, Sheffield
Hallam in the UK does a distance learning "enterrprise networks" masters
degree thats accredited by Novell, but having spent 4 years there
already, and having had disagreements with staff members etc, I was
wondering what other degrees people might have found or taken by
 distance learning?

Designing Cisco Networks by Diane Teare is indeed good!

 Hi,

Getting hold of Top Down Network Design is well worth doing.

 Hey Group,
I finished reading Lammle's CCDA and allready got one of the Boson
 tests
for CCDA. I registered to write the test on July 31st. This was the
 earliest
I could schedule for the test at that location. Concidering that I have
another month to prepare, I was pondering the idea of reading another
book...Can't hurt right? ;) I was wondering which one to get? I looked at
 BN,
and found CCDA Cram notes. This one looks good to me cause it only has
 about
300 pages and I think I could fit that in easily, but I've also seen
people
comment on the top-down network design book. Is this book more geared
 towards
CCDP? Any help and suggestions would be great. Thanks again group.

Please send the address to me too. I am still debating on CCNA 1 or 2. In
comparison, how hard is the CCNA2?

mike, the techmindworks tests look good so far, but
nobody i've talked to seems to know how many questions
they have in all. it says on their site that the pool
grows every day but i'm not sure if that's true for
the demos or only for the full version. full version's
only 15 bucks and i just signed up for the hell of it
this morning. i figure i'd blow the money anyway, why
not see what they got. it's supposed to cover the new
640-507 ccna exam and so far i'm getting some really
tough questions. the site loads pretty fast and i like
the straightforward look. at least they don't have
huge graphics and the cgi's don't take forever to load
(yet). i'll let you know what i find. - jb

BTW i'd really like to see their routing 2.0 exams...
let's do that one next. when are you taking the 507?
