CCIE switch suggestions [7:65904]

2003-03-20 Thread Brad Nixon
I know this question probably has been asked here before, so forgive me. I
already have three routers (2x2514 and a 2509) and a Catalyst 1900 in my
home lab. I want to get a switch that will help me in preparing for the
CCIE. Can anyone make a suggestion on a switch that will give me the IOS
features that I need while not being outrageously priced?

Re: Placement of IDS [7:48420]

2002-07-11 Thread Brad Nixon

The easy answer to your question is It depends. Do you trust your
firewall? Do you trust your internal users? The best solution would be to
have an IDS on each side of your firewall. That way you could detect both
external and internal threats.

2002-07-09 Thread Brad Nixon

Dain,

Just out of curiosity, who was the author of the test question? When I was
studying for my CCNP I ran into several poorly written questions and others,
like this one, that were just plain wrong.

Also, are the people that think that 2 to the power of 4 equals 8 the same
people that write to this list asking what they should study since they
failed the CCNA on the first and second attempts?

I have never used HP switches, but I have run into problems with other

and duplex settings on both boxes. Auto-negotiate does not always work in a
cross-vendor environment.

Re: Connecting Windows NT RAS [7:28570]

You actually don't terminate the calls to the NT server, you need an Access
Server. A T1 line can handle up to 24 calls a time. The RAS server can
simply be connected to one of the LAN ports on the Access Server to
authenticate the calls. Check out the Cisco AS5350.

What hardware do I need to provide this kind of connectivity?

Do I need 24 serial ports on the server, each connected to an external

If the answer is yes, how do connect these 24 modems to the T1 line?

I finished up my CCNP today, passing the BCRAN (last test). I started
with
switching, then routing, then support (after I did the CCNA, of course).

In terms of difficulty, here are my personal ratings from easiest to most
difficult: CIT (support), BCMSN (switching), BCSN (routing), BCRAN
(Remote
Access). Although routing and remote access are probably interchangeable
on
the list, because there were some questions on BCRAN that simply were not
fair. There were a few questions that asked for a single answer, but more
than one of the choices would have been absolutely correct with the
information presented. There were also some questions that required more
than one answer, but only one was actually correct. I had difficulty with
the routing one, simply because of so much BGP, which I don't work with
all
 that much.

Anyway, if anyone has specific questions, please email me and I'll try to
 assist you if I can.

 Best of luck to all.

P.S. Thanks to all of you who contribute to this site. I have found it
to
be a valuable resource in preparing for the certification.

 Hi Group,
I just finished the Routing 2.0 exam with a score of 850.The required
score
 is 690.There were 61 questions.

 The materials used:
Routing TCP/IP - Doyle (No comparisions)
Internet Routing Architechture - Basam Halabi (Gives the understanding far
 beyond the exam lines).
 ACRC - Cisco Press book
Cramsession PDF - Posted by some friend in group some days before (Really
 good-go to www.getCCNP.com ).
BGP Paper from CCO - After all nobody can explain cisco things better than
 cisco themselves.
ofcourse Boson Routing 2.0 exam 1 - Gem is the one word to describe it.

And for those who are scheduled or studying for that:
1)There is a lots and lots of BGP but nothing that is not covered by the
CCO
 BGP paper.
If you understand and learn from that BGP is down ( atleast for the
exam.).
2)Equal share for OSPF as well as this also had lots of questions.
3)Know how to identify different types of routes and know how to find the
next hop from the route table (by weight,localpre.. etc.).
4)Eigrp had some questions mostly commands.where you will asked to type
the
command number from a list displayed.

So, that is all buddies, 3 more to go.

 Ram.

I believe this is correct. The first packets will arrive at the same time,

They would bith reach the destination at the same time (speed of

placed
on the wire, the Fast Ethernet would be placing 20 bits of information
(actually encoded as 24 bits) on the wire for every 2 bits that the 10bT
would place on the wire. At least his is my understanding of 100bT vs
 10bT..
