RE: Anyone's comments on BCSN class?

2000-10-14 Thread Daniel Boutet1

I am doing self study and bought a few of the books you mentioned.

The first on I have attacked is the one by Thomas II

Hey I am only on page 65 and I am getting a little ticked off.
I've been waiting for this book for a month now and I finally got it.
(ordered it so I could not look at it before I paid).
ISBN: 0-07-212477

So far there is a lot of assumption from the authors. All is just "thrown"
with little or no explanation.

Chapter 2 answer key (2.10) full of errors
Typo's: too many to mention
Figures on Chapter 3 (page 65) not very well presented (personal opinion)

I had high expectation and was anticipating a really good book.
It is early in the book and early this Saturday morning but I sure hope it
gets better.

I will follow up on this, but sure would like some feedback.

Just returned from BSCN with MentorTech. I did not study any of the material
beforehand but did meet the prerequisites. Seeing that you already have CCNP
you should be quite comfortable.

At issue is always the makeup of the class members. If many have the "deer
in the headlights look" the instructor may have to change the pace of the
class. Subnetting and VLSM took a day and a half. That is listed as a
prerequisite. I don't know if that is the normal pace. We did feel a little
rushed at the end. Judging by my routing table many of the groups did not
finish their labs. They cut out at five - done or not.
1) Recommendation to all. Expect to be introduced to a lot of material. It
would be a rare person who would know it well by week's end. Expect to spend
a lot of time in further study. I have some routers so I will be able to
redo the labs. They do a lot with a few boxes. A good idea would be to
review each days material in the evening. I'll be making up flash cards from
the objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter.
2) Prep. The more that you know - the more in depth your questions can be.
Great sources are CCO, and the Cisco Press books that cover routing. Jeff
Doyle, Bassam Halabi, Tom Thomas, the EIGRP book, and ACRC. If you know all
that material then you don't need the class.
3) No.

Enjoy!

 1) Any recommendations before going into the class?
 2) Any preperation?
 3) In retrospect, was there anything that you felt you would

 you know now?

Thanks so much. This group has been invaluable for me.

Brian,
I hate the way these tests word their questions sometimes. Why don't they
just state the mask as it should be -contiguous bits left to right(except
for wildcard masks ofcourse). If they are going to state the subnet portion
is stealing 11 bits from the host portion of the address why don't they just
state that.

You are exactly right though a /11 subnet mask is 255.224.0.0

Don't let these silly tests screw you up. I think sometimes they try to
impress a point and screw things up. I don't think Cisco is in the business
to have you memorize wrong information. (If you know subnetting in the real
world, you will pass their test questions regarding these issues ~~I would
read Cisco's ACRC book and practice their examples, there is also a great
section on 3com's website on subnetting I highly reccomend).

There are 3 portions of the address (network, subnet, and host)and the subnet
portion is using 11 host bits to subdivide this class b network.

The subnet mask would be /27 or 255.255.255.224not /11.

Just started reading the book. (100 pages read for the first time)
This comment is only on a first look at the book. If you are reading the

pretty easily.

If you read below I stated a few places where a few errors where.

Add on to this:

Chapt 4 page 96 figure 4.1 Totally irrelevant. There is also another figure
4-1 on Page 100
Usually there should only be one figure 4-1

Back to reading! Feedback from anyone who is or has read the book is
welcome.
Did anyone actually only read this book to pass the BSCN?
I know it states on the cover "Book Companion"
which probably means "buy another book instead" or "companion is what you
really should have instead of this book"

Just a little frustrated, sorry to the list..

Subject: Re: Router w/o any brains

I was wondering if anyone has come across a router where the
hostname showed up as such:

   Router(boot)#

one of my peers has told me this means the router did not
fully boot up. Is this true? Boot mode is what he called it.
Any help is much appreciated in advance.

While I am reasonably confident that this issue has been
addressed at least one hundred times in the archives, I am going
to take a new and innovative approach on this issue. Here
goes...

Consider your router to be like a little kid. It generally has
no intelligence until you take the time to educate it. It will
function without education, but it does so much better with a
little bit of intelligence turned on. Consider that you have
the ability to influence the intelligence of this router and
restrict whether it will remain at the fifth grade level, or
advance on to doctoral studies in network engineering 8-)
First, you will need to turn on the "proper" learning
environment. You do this by going to the proper mode on this
device and first determine if it has a brain. Sadly alas, not
all routers have brains installed! Some of them have lost their
brains along the way due to maliciousness on the part of others,
abandonment, or neglect. Sometimes, they have to get their
brains every time they wake up (it's a difficult life for a
router). If they can't find their brains, they wander aimlessly
through router life as an uneducated router.

To check to see if the router has any brains, do a "show flash"
command when you log in at priviledge mode. If there is a valid
brain installed, it will have a cryptic name such as
c2500-js-l_120-3.bin. Once you have determined that you have
the correct brain for your given router, you need to see if
somebody turned on the learning settings for this device. The
learning settings will govern how much knowledge the device can
attain. There are three levels generally. They are as follows:

Rock Stupid (also called rommon mode, less than helpful mode,
0x2100 mode) - at this level, the router will never really
amount to much in life. This is what your mom warned you about
when she brought up the topic of getting a good education! The
good news is that you can rapidly advance to a more educated
station in life by going to the next educational level. See
grade school mode below.

Grade School mode (also called Rxboot mode, or the baby IOS
mode, boot mode, or 0x2101 mode)- In this mode, you router is in
a good position to learn a lot. It will not actually perform
any useful work however, because it needs more intelligence to
function. It can do the basics, such as find its way around its
environment, ask others for directions, and so on. Of course,
it will never rise to its full potential until it gets a good
education and completes the final education portal (where all
future learning takes place). See High Scool diploma mode
below.

High School diploma mode (also known as Full boot mode, normal
boot, 0x2102 mode and other names). This is the full level of
educational awareness. This is the mode where all forms of
advanced learning take place. It is an absolutely essential
prerequisite to have the high school diploma mode before going
on to advanced educational pursuits such as BS/BA mode, Masters
mode, or PHD mode. We can get to these more advanced modes
simply by swapping out our existing brain (IOS) for a better
brain (More advanced feature set IOS). Of course, you will have
to pay tuition (licensing fees) for that higher education;-)

So, to recap, first you need to see if you have a brain
installed. Do a "show flash" command at user or priviledged
mode to see that a valid operating system exists. Check what
you have against the chart on this page to see if it is correct:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/620/4.html

or,

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/620/1.html

or,

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/620/5.shtml#identifiers

Once you know you have the correct brain for your router, then
see if it is set to the proper leaning mode listed above. This
is done very simply by inspecting the learning index indicator
(also called the configuration register) with the following
command:

"show version"

Look for the output at the bottom (after pressing the space bar
once) for the configuration register setting. If it is anything
other than high school mode (0x2102), you may need to change it.
Go into your device and get to the following prompt:

Router(boot)# configure terminalCR
Router(boot)(config)#configuration-register 0x2102

Finally verify you did it correctly by typing the following
command:

RE: BCMSN: VLAN's and Subnets

2000-09-20 Thread Daniel Boutet1

I have one problem with this scenario:

Why did you put VLAN under layer 3 info?

As far as I know they are strictly L2

My two cents:

Assuming that they have their own servers, and that you are not routing
between them
then they can have any address that you wish (private). It is like having
two LANs.
The switches can also be totally separate.

Subject: BCMSN: VLAN's and Subnets

I have a question about implementing VLAN's in existing LAN's.

Let's say that I have one office with stacked switches connecting 100 users
to a network with a couple of servers and other good stuff.

Layer 2 info: Ethernet, one big broadcast domain
Layer 3 info: IP, one full class C : 192.168.16.0

After having analyzed the entire LAN, I find out that 50 users are using
resources that the other 50 users are not using, and the same thing the
other way around. Instead of splitting the stacked switches up in two
separated physical stacks, I now assign the ports for the first 50 users to
VLAN 11 and for the rest 50 users VLAN 12.

Layer 2 info: Ethernet, two big broadcast domains (not including
VLAN1)
Layer 3 info: IP, one full class C : 192.168.16.0

I would assume that this would work great as long as noone from VLAN 11
needs any resources from VLAN 12, and the same thing the other way around.

Now to my question (which is more a confirmation of my theory):

I would only need to split my class C up in subnets if I want Inter-VLAN
communication between my VLAN 11 and VLAN 12 right???

Layer 2 info: Ethernet, two big broadcast domains (not including
VLAN1)
Layer 3 info: IP, VLAN 11 : 192.168.16.64/26, VLAN 12 :
192.168.16.128/26

Do I have the right idea, or am I way off???

Thanks for your comments on this.

I'm pretty sure VoIP is not really on the BCRAN exam. It's not in the
class. I took the Foundation exam and didn't get any VoIP question.

Perhaps others can tell us if they got any VoIP questions on BCRAN.

I was wondering about the Exam Outline Prep. Guide. The BCRAN Guide
shows VoIP, but neither the Cisco Press Book, or the BCRAN course
objectives
mention it.
Oh well,

I sent a message to Cisco Training a couple months ago pointing out that
some of their objectives/topics lists are lacking in useful information
(to
say the least). I gave them suggestions on how to fix the lists for
CCNA,
Switching, Remote Access, and Support, all of which have absolutely
awful
  lists.

I got back a form letter saying that all scores are final and if I need
more information on how to pass the tests, go to these URLs. Guess what
the
URLs were to? The useless list of objectives. (I was just trying to
help.
I've actually passed CCDP and CCNP, by the way.)

One thing that helps when you're studying is to use the course
objectives
instead of the test objectives. For example, instead of looking at the
useless test topics for CCNA, which claim you'll need to know IPX three
times and that PPP is a bridging/switching technology, use the course
  outline available here:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/cust/classes/C-TRN-ICND.html

  For BCRAN, go here:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/cust/classes/C-TRN-BCRAN.htm
l

  For CIT (Support) go here:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/cust/classes/C-TRN-CIT.html

Routing and Switching CCIE written has a good exam blueprint here:

  http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/rsblueprint.html

  Hope this helps,

i just got my CCNA i noticed that the online networking academy
curriculum
had detailed list of 60 topics to review for CCNA test (not that i
did),
which did not appear on the exam info at the www.cisco.com cisco
website's
exam info contains a detailed list for routing 2, and CCDA/DP tests.
however, the list of topics for the other 3 CCNP tests is very sparse
additionally, there are some goals for CCIE written test, but no
detailed
topics or objectives. i think it would be useful to obtain this, maybe
contact cisco, or if such thing is not available come up with our own
list. let me know if you have any ideas/interest in this. igor vilensky
