off-topic: Attrition in the ranks? [7:12768]

2001-07-17 Thread Elvis Costello

[demime could not interpret encoding binary - treating as plain text]
Has anyone else (hopefully) noticed a reduction in the "wow-i can get a ccnp
and immediately make a small fortune, then on to ccie and it's time to pick
out a yacht" mania/irrational exuberance?

I've noticed a slight drop following the dotcom/telecom debacles and was
just wondering if others have noticed anything similar or if people are
still going 'all out' in hopes that telecom will ultimately bounce back.
Many people that I have spoken with (not necessarily a statistically sound
cross-section) seem to be crossing-over/back to the mcse 2k (and soon to be
xp/.net) arena as they guard their enterprise jobs.

Unsettling flash forward-- Jane Smith basks in the moment of being awarded
CCIE #10,000 by showing off her commemorative "CCIE Pez Dispenser" to her
friends/family.

Perhaps Cisco could have pursued the "righteoous tree hugger" angle as a
reason to suspend the creation of those (apparently) outrageously expensive
plaques (presumably made in part with sacred rain forest wood).

Or maybe they could co-brand with RONCO and come out with the "CCIE/ Popeil
Pocket Fisherman with built in RIF decoder ring as the prize for passing" ???

[picturing proctors tossing them by the handfuls into the thronging
masses/audience members who have just finished taking their exams in the new
2003 "Who want to be a CCIE with Regis" audience poll/exam format]

oh well...time to renew that Paxil prescription

re: good news and bad news for 1 day lab [7:13240]

2001-07-22 Thread Elvis Costello

[demime could not interpret encoding binary - treating as plain text]
8000!!! Is this possible??? Assuming even a marginal passing rate, that sure
dumps a lot of CCIEs into an already depressed employment arena. Surely the
VAR appetite can't be that ravenous with the techonomy on its backside?

Maybe those "trucking schools" that advertise on late night tv will soon
branch out into CCIE training/quickie certification as well.

I'm fearing the day that I see a "Guaranteed CCIE in 7 days" banner on any
given tech site. This doesn't sound that far-fetched if Cisco caves further
and simply allows/promotes widespread remote-access "lab" testing [which
will no doubt be considered attractive by some bean counters at Cisco who
will always strive for full automation -- effectively reducing the "lab"
terminology to a complete joke as it becomes just another rote memorization
mcse-like exercise]. Let's hope not

btw -- Based on my experience in the field (which may not necessarily be a
great example), it seems that quite often MANY network "problems" are
related to the "no brainer" topics that Cisco is reportedly electing to
eliminate (setting up and troubleshooting cabling and addressing issues).

Nothing like sacrificing the fundamentals at the altar of expediency.

Guys,
There are some good news and some bad for the CCIE LAB exam .

Good News :
1- the lab is changing into one day lab (not to stress on 2 day hard
working)
2- the basic configuration like ip addressing and cabling are pre-installed
3- the best in all no reverse telneting (no need to practic on access
server)
4- lab can now be schedul earlier
5- affective from 1 sept.
6- no need to take the written exam again if u are of old one as both the
written and lab is changing
7- all the topics are unchanged so no need to look for more... only patren
had changed
8- best in all the 30 marks seperate troubleshooting is not requried but
will be testing on that same day th proctor will monitor u how u
troubleshoot devices.
9- The knob switch will be added to the lab for shifting from one router to
another for config. (very easy)... and it will cost u around $40.

Bad news :
1- According to CISCO the market have only 6000 CCIE around the globle so
more should be needed so i think the CCIE will be in SURPLUS after it like
MCSE and CCNP as they are giving relax to this project.
2- 3900 token ring switch is added.
3- may be LS1010 will be added to the lab.
4- according to JEFF (CCIE lab Manager) the VoIP will be in the lab at
anytime.
5- There are around 8000 people to go for the CCIE lab in sept till nov. so
i thing there will be many CCIE .. oo

Cisco's site notes when the Lab format will be changed, but I didn't notice
a date for the change (if any) to the written exam.

Anyone have any ideas? Rumors?

Thanks

re: improve lan speed ? [7:15225]

2001-08-07 Thread Elvis Costello

[demime could not interpret encoding binary - treating as plain text]
This is tricky but try the following:

Go to your local store and buy some super glue.
Apply a generous amount of superglue to NIC A and affix it to NIC B.
This (1/2)+(1/2) methodology will yield one full duplex combo card (please
do not get greedy and try this with more than two NICs as your KITTY 5 wire
may begin to melt).

But wait, there's more --

The 10 to 100 transition is even easier, just look on the side of your NIC
for the "Spoiler" upgrade slot. While I am far too addle-minded to
understand the complex aerodynamic issues involved, I have been told by my
good friend H. Simpson that the spoiler upgrade allows the card to transfer
data at a far faster rate without subjecting your server to the risk of
becoming unstable and possibly flipping over right in the middle of your
datacenter. This is what the old people used to call an "abend" (and it it
most frightening for all but the most grizzled NOC vets). Using some of the
glue leftover from step 1, obtain and apply a Spoiler (preferably made out
of balsa wood) to the new and improved nic combo card and then place it back
in the machine.

You will soon be well on your way to packet nirvana.

and how to change NIC from 10 to 100

[demime could not interpret encoding binary - treating as plain text]
Hence the common maritime vernacular term "any port in a storm" (not to be
confused with the roughly parallel networking vernacular term "any port in a
[broadcast] storm")

It sure would sound silly to seek out "any interface in a storm."

(Though probably not as silly as this thread which may have greatly exceeded
its TTL)

--
And if I use a word that sounds like "too", how do you know if I'm
saying to, two, or two? Context!!

If you say port, I might think you're either referring to a place where
boats tie up to docks or you might be discussing wine. Or you could be
"porting" software from one platform to another.

Then again, if I'm chatting with my neighbor in the next cubicle over,
are we interfacing or porting? Interfacing, I hope. If we're porting
my wife will kill me!

What about GUIs? They're not physical, they're logical.

The point is that context is everything and if you refer to the
physical connector as either an interface or a port, we'll all
understand what you're referring to.

Ok, enough of that thread (or is it string??) ;-)

never said i was.
BUT, If i say interface 3, you know im taking about an interface. if i
say
port 3, you have no idea what layer im at, do you?

You should get slapped around for not capitalizing the first letter of
a
sentence or the word "I", and for not using punctuation properly.

Let he who is without grammatical error cast the first misplaced
modifier.

Interface: the place at which independent and often unrelated systems
meet
and act on or communicate with each other

Port: a hardware interface by which a computer communicates with
another
device or system

So who really decided which was more correct--interface or port? Who
set
that standard?

When you talk about BRI on a router, is it a "Basic Rate Interface
Interface" or is it a "Basic Rate Interface Port" that you connect to?

Food for thought.

1. Gigabit Ethernet Port Adapter (PA-GE) (7100 and 7200VXR only)
The single port Gigabit Ethernet Port Adapter (PA-GE) provides a
Gigabit
Ethernet connection for the Cisco 7200 series router.

2.

Verify the IP Address of the Router Ethernet Port
To verify the IP address, enter the show interface e0 command on the
command
line. For example:

Router>show interface e0
Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down
Hardware is PQUICC Ethernet, address is 0003.6bdc.0435 (bia
0003.6bdc.0435)
  Internet address is 10.10.10.1/24

3.

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/pcat/1000.pdf

Don't we have other things more important in our lives than correcting
each
other's English based on our limited version of what we perceive is
correct?
And if you must finish this argument, I would ask that you provide the
source of the original definition that "interface" has been defined to
be
the only correct term to refer to a hardware-based network connection
point?
Who has actually defined that "interface" is the only correct term?

Does the IEEE get it wrong? Check IEEE 802.1D, the bridging standard.
It
uses ports for the physical "interfaces" on a bridge (switch).
