Re: question on ip packet

2000-08-16 Thread Luan Kim

Brian,
My knowledge of tcp/ip is enough for me to configure routers/switches.
I'm still learning. There is nothing wrong with a network engineer who
holds a ccna cert. that doesn't know what's inside an ip packet. I have
friends who are 20+ years old and are currently network engineers and work
for multi-billion dollar companies but they still don't know how to milk a
cow:). Cheers.

You are a Network Engineer for a multi-million dollar company, hold a
CCNA, and are asking something trivial like whats in an IP packet? If you
searched the web you would get that answer in a quick query. I am not one
to flame, I just find it unreal that you could study for your CCNA and not
come across what makes up an IP packet.I even find it more mind
boggling that anyone could get their CCNA, have a job as a network
engineer, and not be with in 10 walking paces from a decent tcp/ip
reference that would have this in the first chapter.

Since cisco is retiring the ccnp 1.0 this end of July. Assuming that Joe

he has to re-certify? Thanks for filling in.

Re: 4000 router boot TFTP

2000-07-04 Thread Luan Kim

Hi Jim,
Usually if your ethernet interface on the 4000 is plugged into a dumb hub,
then when you boot up the 4000, it should bring up the ethernet interface
pretty fast which should allow the 4000 to talk to the tftp
server(10.1.1.9 in your case) right away. Unless you plug your 4000's
ethernet interface into one of those catalyst switches( like the 19xx,
29xx, 35xx, etc..), then it takes about 30 seconds for the
"autonegotiation" for speed and duplex-mode to sync up. If you're using a
catalyst, then an easy way go into the switch and enable spanningtree
portfast.

Hope it'll help you.

RE: how to configure VLAN on 2900 switch-how about full duplex and spanning tree

2000-07-03 Thread Luan Kim

Hi Chee Tong,
With your current "show run" below, you're only running one vlan1 on your
catalyst 2924. By default, the catalyst 2924 comes with one VLAN1. By
adding another VLAN2 in your switch, you can reduce broadcasts on your
network. Here is an example of placing port fastethernet0/6 on VLAN2:

conf t
int fastethernet0/2
switchport access vlan 2

And if you want to enable spanning-tree, first do this to see if it's
already enabled on the switch:

sh span

If it shows that it's "disabled", then you can do this to enable it:

conf t
spanning

Hope it'll help you.

Hi Geoffrey,
I believe Chee Tong was asking about vlan's in a catalyst 2924 model. The
syntax you showed down below is probably for configuring a high end
cat55xx or 65xx. You CANNOT use those syntax on a catalyst 2924; they
don't exist.

Re: how to configure VLAN on 2900 switch

2000-07-02 Thread Luan Kim

hi Chee Tong,
By default, your cat29xx comes with one vlan(vlan1). For example, if you
want to place your fastethernet0/13 on vlan2, you do this:

conf t
int fastEthernet 0/13
switchport access vlan 2

Hope it'll help you.
