Cisco Exam Certification Guide vs. Course Manual

2001-01-31 Thread Mari Misato

Hi, everybody:

Do you know if the following applies to CCNP 2.0 courses/exams?? There
are currently two books for each CCNP exam. What do you think??

Thanks.

Mari

Hi Scott,

Cisco Press tries to produce two types of books for each test: the course
manual and a study guide.

The book edited by Laura Chappell is the actual Cisco course manual ported
to book format. If you have not attended the class, this is a good book to
get. If you attended the class, you would be disappointed with this book
because it's essentially the same as the course manual.

The other type of certification book Cisco Press publishes is a study
guide. This type of book does not follow the course manual exactly. The
author writes about the subject in a refreshing manner that does not repeat
the course.

The study guide is best used if you know the material somewhat already.
It's especially good to use right before you take the test.

The CD practice exam that comes with the study guides should help, but the
one that comes with the ACRC Study Guide is full of typos and minor
technical mistakes, (not Clare's fault I don't think). Otherwise the ACRC
Study Guide is great. That's what I used and I found her writing to be very
clear. Her method of teaching IP addressing and summarization is great. I
think the OSPF chapter has some mistakes, though.

Priscilla

P.S. I got off group study for now because I'm on the road. I'm not sure
this post will make it since I'm not on the list? But I copied you.

Hi Group,

I have a predicament. I recently purchased the "Advanced Cisco Router
Configuration" Cisco Press book by Laura Chappell. So, since I am able to
sometimes study at work (I work in a NOC) I brought it in to study. I
found out a co-worker also has a Cisco Press book on this subject titled
"ACRC Exam Certification Guide" by Clare Gough. I'm confused!!! 2 Cisco
press books on the same subject? Which one is a better test prep for the
exam? Also, since passing the exam is not the entire reason I'm reading
about this, which one will I learn more from? Should I just buy both?

I would appreciate the opinions of any people who have either passed the
ACRC or have read either or both of the above mentioned books!

And Priscilla, I CC'ed you because I value your opinion highly!

Thank you to all who answer!

Re: Labs for BCMSN (CCNP)

2000-11-14 Thread Mari Misato

I just finished reading the same book. I find it covers quite a
lot of design topics which I think they shouldn't be in this
course since it's a CCNP exam, not CCDP.

I also have very limited access to Cisco switches. Does anyone
know whether this exam is product specific?

I think there are also errors in this book but I can't seem to
find the errata sheet. Could anyone give the URL?

Thanks in advance.

Hello again.

Does anyone know where I could find some lab scenarios for BCMSN. I
have a 5505 Catalyst Switch that I can fool around on and I have cleared
the config, upgraded the IOS, messed around with VLANs and basic
configuration, and that is about it. Does anyone know of a website or a
book that has basic lab scenarios in it to help me prepare for BCMSNÂ…and
the rest of the CCNP tests for that mater?

Also, I am reading the Cisco Press book for BCMSN. The book seems to
cover design more than configuring. What does the test focus more on,
design or configuration?

Thanks!

Hi all;

 Thank you all!

Finally, passed the exam of CCDA, considered that it
was hardest. It is because the exam question is very long, very
hard to read it. Took me 90 minutes to complete the exam.

The next one will be CID to complete my CCDP, it will be my s
econd last written exam. Welcome any information or advice.

Some additional information is required here.

First, the maximum limit is 53K (US) imposed by the line voltage
restriction
place upon telcos in the U.S. The speed reported is for only the instant
it
was measured as the connection changes dynamically over lifetime of
connection. There can be only one A-D conversion in the line which
terminates
at the telco switch with a trunk side T-1.

Marketing. It's gone to the same place as the extra miles on the MPG
estimates, the extra minutes of runtime on cellular batteries, etc.

During the lengthy "song of modems mating" heard when the call connects,
both ends test the ability of the analog line to handle various
combinations

data can be passed at that particular time over that particular
connection,

the top speed may be renegotiated. And, anything over 33.6 only occurs
if
one end is a digital (ISDN or T-1) connection, and only in the direction
from the digital side to the analog side.

Your mileage may vary. Batteries not included. This 56K modem was full
when packed. Contents may have settled during shipment.

A generic network question

Hi Group

If I have a network with all the workstations
turned on (e.g. NT Workstations just boot up at the
Ctrl+Alt+Del state) but no one is using any of
the workstations, will this network have any network
traffic? If yes, what kind? And, any tools to monitor
this?

Thanks.

Subject: Passed CCNP 2.0

Well a few weeks of studying and I'm finally finished
with this thing. Here's a list of what I studied, and
what worked for me. Hope it helps!

Week of July 3rd
Passed Routing 2.0
I read Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Volume one and
Halabi's Internet Routing Archicture. Exam outline is
dead on.

Week of July 10th
Passed Switching 2.0
I read the Cisco Switching book, and the CLSW from
Mcgraw-Hill. Exam outline again, is right on.

Week of July 17
Passed Novell 4.x to 5.0 upgrade.
I blame the completely boring material I had to
study for destroying my motivation for the next 2
weeks.

Week of July 24
SLACKED!!!
Week ok July 31
SLACKED MORE!!!

Week of Aug 7
Monday-Passed CCDA.
I took CCDA not for the Cert, but to get me moving
again. Pretty easy test, just tedious.
Wednesday-Passed Remote Access 2.0
I got Jeff Quigle's book for this. I basically
skimmed the book and took the test. Wasn't that bad.
Exam outline could be revised.

Week of Aug 14
Passed Support 2.0
Ok. I got the Cisco Internet Troubleshooting book
from Cisco. I could not read this book, it was
completely boring. I took the test to see what was on
it and passed it. Coolness.

My advice:
Read Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Vol.1.
I got more out of this than any of the others.

Read Halabi's Internet Routing Architectures.
He manages to keep it interesting almost all the way
through.

Read the Cisco Switching book, I think by Kennedy
Clark. I managed to read it all the way through.

Well, it's onto the CCIE written probably in a few
weeks, I've started (again) on Caslow's book, and I
can't recommend it enough either.

Good Luck to All!
-John
