RE: garbage in hperterminal ?

2000-11-30 Thread Ric Messier

Always got it to work with 9600 8N1, though I do recall having problems with
flow control at times. Seems as though no flow control is right. Been quite
a while, though.

TACACS and console port

2000-12-29 Thread Ric Messier

Hi,
Quick question, because I'm away from a lab that would give me the ability
to test this. If I have authentication on my console/aux ports set to TACACS
and my TACACS server goes down, what happens if I connect to either of those
ports (say the AUX port with a modem)? Do I get denied or allowed? ie, do we
fail open or closed?

Thanks,
Ric

I really like bookpool.com -- blows fatbrain's pricing out of the water even
with my corporate fatbrain discount.

RE: My Layer 2 knowledge sucks

2000-10-27 Thread Ric Messier

I found this book to be outstanding. Very easy to read and understand.
Solidified my understanding of a lot of layer 2 technologies. Does a great
intro on the telephone system and why transmission rates are what they are.
Always nice to have a historical understanding in addition to the technical
understanding.

Watch the word wrap.

As far as the LAN goes, Radia Perlman's Interconnections (the 1999 version)
is the bible. Black has some books about DSx, OC-x, and ATM that are very
detailed, but imho not very easy to read.

Hope this helps

RE: How to pronounce? router

2000-08-23 Thread Ric Messier

You obviously haven't ever dealt with network engineers in Ireland. They
call it ROO-TER over there. As in, the ROO-TER fell OOVER.

I'm not picking on anyone, that's an actual expression I heard while
working with a customer in Ireland at one point.

Re: Book + Resources about WEB security

2000-07-05 Thread Ric Messier

www.securityfocus.com
packetstorm.securify.com
www.rootshell.com
www.cert.org

Get yourself on the Bugtraq mailing lists at securityfocus.

For locking down hosts, try http://www.enteract.com/~lspitz -- good
information about firewalls and armoring hosts. Also, try www.fish.com --
some good information from the author of Satan and Cops.

It's a start at any rate. I'm not sure there are really good books with
specific cookbooks for security measures. Mostly, it's a question of
learning your OS and just screwing it down then keeping up with all the
latest vulnerabilities.
