All, Thanks so much for your guidence!

 I completed CCNP/CCDP first.

Then I read the Sybex(Lammle) CCIE Study Guide. I used the Boson Tests #1
and #2, and quickly realized I was not ready for some of the ATM
questions.
I picked up the McGrawHill(Giles) CCIE study guide, and used it and the
Cisco Web Site to fill in the blanks. For Token Ring I used the RIF study
aid that is free here at the GroupStudy StudyNotes as well as the Rossi
 Paper at CCPREP.
I used some of the free study aids at Bosons site, they have some faster
ways to derive your IP access list wildcards and IP summary ranges.

 Token Ring Rif Links:
  http://www.groupstudy.com/notes/notepages/rif2.html
  http://www.ccprep.com/resources/news/archives/Token_Ring2.pdf

 For summary addressing and wildcards:
 http://www.boson.com/promo/freestuff.htm#guides

I passed with an 83% I did pretty well in all areas except for
Performance
Management section, if anyone knows what that section's focous was I
would
appreciate a response. Perhaps the fact that I don't know is indicitive as
to why I did not do so well in that area, I had really wanted to hit a 90%
:-)

If I had it to do over, I would have started with assessing myself with
the
boson's Having a CCNP/DP gets you about 80% there, I could have saved
about
2 weeks if I just found out in the begining that 20% that I needed to
focus
 on.

I am off to start studies for the LAB, since I don't know where else to
start, I will ask the groupstudy Lab forum moderator if I can join after I
 schedule my Lab Exam.

Thanks again for all the advice. Good Luck to those persuing this crazy
 certification. :-)

Normally you connect to a switch and the switch provides the clock to the
routers (external clock).

 I didn't see this question earlier...but I have a question concerning the
 connectivity between these two devices...

What is the difference in having these boxes in a lab environment and in
the
field? (as far as clocking goes)

If they're hooked up back to back, isn't that the same way you would have
 them in the field?

What happens when you switch clocking to internal? What does this
accomplish? Is this a cisco specific thing to configure atm through sonet
as opposed to dark fiber? (or vice versa)

I've never had to do anything like this with any vendor's gear. Just
curious as to what is actually taking place here.

I think this would involve making sure that you plug the TX (SC or ST)
plug
into the OC3 interface's RX jack (SC or ST) opening, and vice-versa. I
can't afford ATM for my lab, but I remember thinking it was neat that you
could do some basic ATM stuff without the switch. If you are asking for
some guidance at a more advanced level than this basic cabling level, then
 forgive my post.

to register for the lab. Too soon, the error message says it will take 3 to
5 days for my results to make it to the registration database...;-( I want

BTW I could go back to review my answers! I marked six that I guessed at and
at the end of the exam I still didn't know them, not much help for me.

I am moving along nicely and am now beginning to learn about that
wonderful
 protocol known as OSPF.
My question is, the BSCN book from CiscoPress, when explaining OSPF,
refers
to multicast addresses such as 244.0.0.5 (ALLSPFRouter address)

Does this book explain these addresses work, or at this point, should I
just
accept the fact that 244.0.0.5 is the ALLSPFRouter ip.

Is their an online table I can find where the reserved multicast ip's are
mapped to their function according to industry standard, or is this
covered
 later in the CCNP course.

 Thanx in advance.

For Standard Access Lists the decision to forward is based on the source

Passed BSCN during the outage...

2000-12-15 Thread Tom Keough

I just want to report my good fortune to score 827 on BSCN (yesterday). I
used the Paquet and Teare BSCN Cisco Press book. I had previously purchased
the Exam Cram Routing book (before BSCN was published) which I found to be
inadequate preparation for the exam. The Boson Tests were a valuable aid in
that they helped me focus my attention during the final week on the areas of
the BSCN book where I needed more work.

I first began monitoring this site last year while I was working on the CCNA
and I have been a daily observer since then. I have made comments and
contributions when I felt I had something to add. I have learned a great
deal about specific questions I have had that someone else had already
addressed, but more importantly I have gotten a taste of the bredth of the
field of networking. I appreciate all of you contributors and I hope I can
earn a spot as a valued member as I become more able to give back.

Re: boson tests??

2000-12-12 Thread Tom Keough

Kyle,
I started preparing for the CCNP routing exam last Spring. I read two ACRC
books published by Cisco. Then in the Summer I missed the deadline for
taking the version 1 exam. I was again ready to prepare for the version 2
exam in October and I looked at several books. I purchased the Exam Cram
Routing book while I was waiting for the Cisco Press publication to hit the
streets. Looking back I thought the Exam Cram book was a good exam prep
type book until I read the one by Paquet and Teare. The BSCN Cisco
publication by Catherine Paquet and Diane Teare came out in early November
and it totally eclipsed the ACRC books and the Exam Cram Routing book.
Paquet and Teare have done an excellent job in writing a clear, concise
Routing course book. The labs are excellent and do-able. This book will be
in my reference library as a permanent resident.

I am at the end stage in preparing for the Routing exam, I am scheduled to
take it this Thursday. I bought the Boson CCNP practice exams and have been
taking them for the past two weeks. The exams are a good drill for going
back over the material I have read in the text (looking up the details in
items I missed). They are also a good way to learn the commands when you
must type them in as the answer to the test questions. The exam questions
are rather simple and I hear that the real thing has questions that require
reasoning. Overall the Boson exams are accurate, I have found a couple BGP
questions on topics not covered in the Cisco Press book and a couple actual
errors and some that are not scored properly. I will be a better judge of
their effectiveness after Thursday morning.

Re: Colt Exams??

2000-12-08 Thread Tom Keough, MCSE, CCNA

Niraj,
I am studying for the BSCN and using the Colt Exams as well. I find there
are many errors in the scoring and in the questions themselves. I have been
looking up the answers in the book. To me the benefit is to see the range
of topics and detail Cisco is showing us. Perhaps a glimpse into the actual
test.

I find that in looking up the answers I am learning more than I would if the
system worked as it should.

A question for the group...
I purchased the Boson tests for the BSCN and in these tests there are many
"fill in the blank" questions where you must type in commands. Is this the
format on the actual test or are the answers there to choose from? It is
much more time consuming to study for a "recall" test than for a
"recognition" test. There are no "fill in the blank" questions in the Colt
Exams.

 Question 9 of 40.
Which OSPF mode of operation is unot/u supported over NBMA
 topologies on a Cisco router?
A. Broadcast
B. Nonbroadcast point-to-point
C. Nonbroadcast multi-access
D. Point-to-point
E. Point-to-multipoint
My answer :- E as it is RPC mode and is not supported in some scenarios
e.g. IP over ATM. Here I tried with option B as well but
 that was also wrong.

 Question 10 of 40.
What generates an OSPF type-2 LSA?
A. ABRs
B. ASBRs
C. DRs
D. BDRs
E. Each router for each area to which it belongs
 My answer :- C as Type 2 LSA's are Link LSA's.

 Question 13 of 40.
 Given the following configuration:

 outer ospf 20
 network 10.3.3.2 0.0.0.0 area 0
 network 10.4.4.1 0.0.0.0 area 3
 network 10.5.0.0 0.0.255.255 area 3
 area 0 range 10.3.0.0 255.255.0.0
 area 3 range 10.4.4.0 255.255.255.0
 area 3 range 10.5.0.0 255.255.0.0

Which statement about the difference between the effects of line 6 and
the effects of line 7 is true?
A. Line 6 advertises a single subnet into area 3 while line 7
advertises all subnets into area 3
B. Line 6 generates a host advertisement while line 7 generates a
 subnet advertisement
C. Line 6 creates a more specific entry in the routing table of a
router belonging to area 3 than does line 7
D. Line 6 advertises a single subnet into area 0 while line 7
advertises all subnets into area 0
My answer :-C seems to most logical...

 Question 27 of 40.
Which of the following best completes the following statement?

When configuring EIGRP for WAN interfaces, the BANDWIDTH statement is
 _.
   A. required for Frame Relay only
B. required for subinterfaces only
C. not required
D. only used for multipoint circuits
My answer :- no clue as very generic question guess was A or D but
both were wrong. I thought A becasue specially in
framerelay multipoint networks we put bandwidth but not necessarily only
on subinterfaces. We may want to use the bandwidth
command directly on a interface so that we can change the default value
 of T1 (1.544MB).

 Question 29 of 40.
When using Enhanced IGRP in large scalable networks, why is additional
 EIGRP configuration required?
A. To be hierarchical
B. To adjust only WAN bandwidth because EIGRP is preconfigured (Plug
 and Play)
C. To be monitored by the administrator
D. To create manually entered summary routes
My answer :- I tried A and D but both were wrong. any clue

 Question 37 of 40.
Which is unot/u a benefit of manual route summarization in EIGRP
 networks?
A. Smaller routing tables
B. Boundaries for query packets
C. More rapid convergence
D. A route to the null interface
My answer :- C becasue if we limit query boundry, rapid concergence
 will automatically happen ??

 Question 38 of 40.
Which statement about an extended IP access list is true when
configuring a distribute-list to filter BGP route advertisements on a
 Cisco router?
A. It cannot be used; only standard IP access lists can be configured

B. It can be used, to specify the source and destination IP address
 of the routes
C. It can be used, to specify the network number and subnet mask of
 the routes
D. It can be used, with a different syntax than the usual use of the
 extended IP access list
My answer :- Tried B and D but was wrong ?? no idea ..

Re: CCNP

2000-11-08 Thread Tom Keough

I just received Building Scalable Cisco Networks by Paquet and Teare today
and it looks great. I have read ACRC Exam Certification Guide and Advanced
Cisco Router Configuration (both by Cisco Press) and the new book seems to
have a different twist to the info covered in the version 1 books plus more
on BGP and optimizing routing update operation.

I ordered the book from Barnes and Noble and paid full price ($60) for it
(ISBN1-57870-228-3). I plan to take the 640-503 on Dec. 4th...
Warmly,
Tom

 Hi ,

I have begun my CCNP cert. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on
what books I need to get started.

I used Todd Lammle's books for my CCNA, They were pretty good.

 Thanks
 Ralph

 Hi

I've heard that HyperTerminal is not good for connecting to the console
port
on Cisco routers. If this is the case, can anyone recommend an alternative
 please.

 Thanks

Re: routing summarization question

2000-10-14 Thread Tom Keough

Hi Jin,
I just read about route summarization a couple days ago and from my little
knowlege I would say the answer is:
172.16.10.0/23
I wrote out the addresses in binary and looked for the "longest match" and
thus the answer above...

 Hi group,
 I am preparing routing 2.0 exam.And I got a question about
 summarization,that is:
 please see following figure:

 |
 |
 | other network
 |
 RouterA-RouterB
 ||  172.16.10.16/29
 ||
 | 172.16.11.4/30
 ||
 ||  172.16.11.8/27
 RouterC

Question is:when I use manual summarization configuration, what is the
 summary network address look like:

some one ever said : 172.16.1.0/24
 Is it correct?why?

 I need your help.Thanks

Re: routing summarization question

2000-10-14 Thread Tom Keough

Hi Sudarshan,
This is my calculation:
172.16.1010.0001(10.16)
172.16.1011.0100(11.4)
172.16.1011.1000(11.8)
|===| = longest match...
8 + 8 + 7 bits to mask the network part (the common elements) = 23

Address = 172.16.10.0/23
Tom

 Hi Tom,

How did you get /23 ? Is it a typo ? I think the summarized route would
 be 172.16.10.0/24
