A dumb question (hit me or ignore me ;)) [7:58288]

2002-11-29 Thread deltan
Why can't I directly hook up a laptop to a 6509 switch
port that enables stp portfast (using straight-thru
cable)?

I can't ping anything in the same subnet (as the
port's VLAN's) and there's no ARP entry in either my
laptop or in 6509.

Any words will be appreciated. :)

Bill

Re: Off Topic - Cisco vis a vis World Com [7:47505]

2002-07-03 Thread deltan

UUNet is a Cisco shop for sure (Canada and US).

And don't confuse WCOM's data networking division with
UUNet (WCOM's subsidiary in Internetworking).

Those students might be talking about the data
networking sidetrue or false, I don't know.

 pricing of Cisco products
as an inducement to use worldCom data circuits.

I believe what used to be UUNet is a major user of
 Cisco equipment. that's
one reason I asked about UUNet's viability. WCOM is
 going to end up selling
assets, and it seems to me that the ISP is about the
 best asset they have.
The network / fiber assets only contribute to the
 current fiber glut, so
become less of a source of hope for revenue from
 sales.

As far as what's in the carrier networks themselves,
 maybe this is less
important to Cisco, as no carriers use their stuff
 anyway? ;-

BTW Juniper stock is not looking real good right now
 at all. Nor Ciena.

Nortel shop. They said that ATT and Sprint are
 Cisco Powered Networks so
they are the big providers that Cisco is
 interested in. This is not
official or anything from Cisco it's just what
 these guys are telling me.

So far today I have seen no word from Cisco on
 its exposure to World
 Com.

the other so called players in the networking
 industry - Redback,
 Nortel,
and Lucent, have all said they have very little
 on the line with
 WorldCom.
Of course, these are companies with one foot in
 the grave already.

WorldCom is one of Cisco's MAJOR customers.
 Cisco stock is back close
 to
it's low of the last year. Maybe Cisco believes
 nothing needs be said?
  Maybe
Cisco figures they can still sell their stuff
 through other channels?

As an employee of another of Cisco's major
 customers, maybe this bodes
  well
for me? with WorldCom out of the way, and no
 longer selling at cost to
  steal
my customers, maybe my own business will pick
 up?

   Sheesh, this is scary.

Anybody out there know how what used to be UUNet
 is doing? Viable? Any
   repercussions through the ISP world?

SNMP and password recovery?? [7:5852]

2001-05-24 Thread deltan

say, a network admin lost router passwords, however,
he still remembers snmp community string (for r+w).

how can he retrieve or reset the passwords (what's
the mib variable?) without having to tftp-upload a
whole router config???

btw, the stuff obtained from snmpwalk is really not
as readable at all as the router config itself. ;)

Re: Who wants to be a CCIE... Challenge Question

2000-06-26 Thread deltan

sorry i don't see why you HAVE TO have 'ip classless'
as the networks are all full class C's (or maybe only
subnets of full class A's as they are 10.x.x.x??!!).
anyone else wants to clarify/confirm? :)

Questions from a new CCNA

2000-06-16 Thread deltan

greetings from a newbie in this group!

i finally took my CCNA last week with a score a little
over 900. however,
i only got 40% in network security, which i have NO
way to believe!! i am
confident in what i was tested regarding that part,
and i used to work in
network security with a tier-1 ISP plus i use ipfw on
UNIX on a daily basis
(access lists are pretty much closed-type ip fw,
imho). anyway, i am very
much curious to know what the heck i answered wrong
(if the test system had
no fault)! -- is there ANY way to talk to cisco to
find out -- man, i am
willing to pay! :)

questions:

1) any comments (pros and cons) on skipping CCNP and
taking CCIE (written)
directly? i know some people did that.
2) any recommended books (and courses) for CCNP and
CCIE (written)?

being new to this group, i wanna tell ya how i feel
here. yes there's gold
here but you really have to dig it out from pile and
pile of other stuff --
sad but true, i have to delete 3/4 or more of the
postings i get from this
list be4 i start to see interesting stuff (i
personally think 1/2 "garbage"
is OK but 3/4 is a little too much). sorry for being
fussy! ;)

overlap of CCNP and CCDP exams...

2000-06-14 Thread deltan

I noticed the foundation exam (and the three separate
ones) is the same for both CCNP and CCDP. Can one
take this exam just once, then CIT and CID, and get
CCNP and CCDP certs?
