RE: Decreasing # of CCIE's Worlwide

2000-09-07 Thread vlan 2

You are obviously referring to CCIEs without any "real world" experience.
I've never met one.

From: Robert Padjen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Might it also mean that people are finding that the
certification is not as important in this market and
that the 'lower' level certifications, along with
'real' world experience, provide a greater benefit to
corporations and providers?

Re: Router Simulators

2000-09-03 Thread vlan 2

Routersim is an appalingly miserable product. Go to
http://www.simrouter.com and train on real routers.

HTH

I searched the archives but found nothing on router simulators. Just
curious if anyone has used them and if they're any good for CCNP
preparation. I was out to the RouterSim site and it's tempting to purchase
because you're able to configure about four routers and two switches. Any
information would be appreciated.

Re: Really getting to me now...(VLANs)

2000-09-01 Thread vlan 2

I think you may be over-amping. An end to end vlan is one that is hosted on
2 or more switches and there for must be encapsulated using a trunking
protocol like ISL or dot1q and multiplexed over a trunk to another switch.

Because of this you now get into issues such as VTP domains, trunk
negociating, client-server-transparent switch modes, VTP update numbers and
VTP pruning.

Switching is fun and interesting and will make you popular with the girls.
Know vlans, VTP, trunking, multicasting and mls and you will ace the test.

Like I said, switching is easy. Pretend you are a little unicast packet
trying to make it from one machine to another. Think of how you are going
to do that, step by step and think of things that could go wrong and stop
you from getting to your destination.

When ever the technical details start to cloud my mind, I pretend I'm a
happy little ethernet frame on a great adventure.

Have a great holiday weekend!

vlan2

Hey Group,
This has now officially gotten to me!!! I've been studying for my
BCMSN which I am taking on the 11th and have read the CiscoPress book and
now
for a refresh, I am hitting the Switching Exam Cram. I am reading over
VLANs
am very comfortable with them except for one section...End-to-end VLANs. I
just can't figure out what they mean. In the books they talk about E-2-E
VLANs and then the next section will be on Local VLANs. I just can't see
the
difference between them, if there is one at all. What I'm taking from their
explanation is that E-2-E VLANs are spanned over different switch blocks,
and
the local ones stay in their own. If this is so, what is the difference? I
think I just need someone to explain these 2 terms to me in layman's terms.
I
usually understand things better when they are said simply and then I can
build on that. I just need to get it to click if you know what I mean...
Thanks in advance for the help guys, it's appreciated ;) I may just be
overanalyzing these things, if so let me know ;)

Re: Ethernet Troubleshooting Woes

2000-08-10 Thread vlan 2

If the cable length is not too long, perhaps the NIC in the server is weak
and is making wimpy little IPX frames that don't make it all the way out to
the workstations.

Try changing the NIC before you call in the marines.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Vlan2

Okay, I'm going completely out of my mind. I am at the end of my rope with
this problem and I have no idea where to go from here. Basically, I'm
begging for suggestions!

Several PCs at one of our branches are having difficulty running a certain
application, which uses IPX on 802.3 frames. We are also running IP on
this
LAN with arpa frames. There is a file server and printer on this LAN, and
all IPX traffic is between the hosts and that file server.

We are have ZERO problems with IP traffic on this LAN. I've been pinging
the tar out the hosts and they act perfectly normal, except for the file
server which had, at worst, a 98% success rate over time.

On our ethernet switch, we are seeing alignment errors and CRC errors
coming
from the file server. The cable has been replaced and we verified that it
is cat 5, but the problems still exist. This is a new file server with a
new NIC.

Okay, the problem is that this particular application takes forever to run
from a desktop out in the building. yet, if you bring that very PC back to
the room where the switch is, the application runs very quickly. This led
us to believe that the cabling was bad. However, if the cabling were bad,
why are we having no problems with IP traffic? None at all! That just
doesn't make any sense to me.

Granted, the cabling out to the desks is Cat 3 and this branch has had some
previous EMI problems in the room, but I just don't see how EMI could
selectively cause one application to fail without there being some
indication of problems with other applications.

I've considered replacing the switch, but the problem only happens when a
PC
out in the main room uses the application, no matter what port it is
connected to. Bring a PC back to the switch room and connect it to any
port
and the program runs as advertised. So, I'm not going to waste my time
with
that. I've also considered replacing the NIC in the server since we're
seeing errors coming from it, but that would not explain the problems we're
having, anyway, so that is probably pointless.

any ideas? Our next step is to hire a very expensive data center design
company to go up there and check things out. We've had electricians check
the room and they said they could find no obvious sources of EMI, even
though we know that it is prevalent there.

Help...please helpI'm dying here, and I'm quickly losing faith in my
troubleshooting skills!

TIA,
John

Re: Newbie

2000-08-06 Thread vlan 2

That path is very logical. It has you going from workstation to server to
infrastructure. It will give you a good perspective. And it's CCNA not
CNNA.

Best of luck to you!

I have no working experience in the IT field, and am considering a career
change.I want the CNNA certification,I am considering the following path--A
plus certification(self study), MCSE (instructer led training), CNNA
(instructer led training)
Does this path seem logical?? I would appreciate a response from anyone.

Re: Question on Spanning Tree Protocol

2000-08-05 Thread vlan 2

On page 184 of Cisco Lan Switching:

"The destination MAC address uses the well known STP multicast address of
01-80-C2-00-00-00".

Hope this helps.

Vlan2

Hi all,
Does the "Spanning Tree Protocol" make use of Broadcasts or
Multicasts?
My guess is Multicast, as Hello BDPUs are used to exchange information. Can
anyone confirm this?

Thanks,

Re: Nooo! I failed! what now?

2000-07-31 Thread vlan 2

Al,

You are now in a very powerful position, you HAVE ALREADY SEEN THE TEST!
This is practically legalized cheating! I and many others have taken tests
we knew we couldn't pass because we wanted a "sneak peak".

Here's a tip: don't memorize, know it like you invented it. In your books,
read each paragraph and write the important concepts in the margin. When
you are alone, stand up and pretend you are teaching a class, speak out loud
the various concepts from start to finish. You should be able to address a
group of people and lecture at length without any notes.

You are smart enough, you just are not studying properly, from now on you
must dominate! This test is nothing, it is a speed bump, you can get past
it. Dedicate your life to it. You must obsess about internetworking.
Don't just study what you think is required for the test...Take it to the
limits. Be a big, ripping pitbull.

Babe Ruth is known as one of the best home run hitters in history. Few
people know that he also struck out a lot. Failure comes with the
terrirory, deal with it. It's time to suck it up and get medieval with
those books.

Strive not just to pass the test, strive to master the material well enough
that you could teach the class.

Other people do it, you will too.

You're the man!

Hello...

Despite many hours of self study and memorization I failed the 407...wasn't
even close..
I scored 617.
71% OSI
14 WAN
42 IOS
60 Net Protocols
33 Routing
20 Security
57 LAN Switch
0Cisco Career Certs (does this have anything to do with the score?)
0Cisco Career Cers Agreement (does this have anything to do with the
score?)

Does anyone have any tips for me to pass the test..I am rescheduled in one
and a half weeks...thanks a lot
Al
