router-id in different protocols [7:74054]

2003-08-16 Thread wj chou
Hi,
I know that in OSPF, router id is not necessary. The interface iP address
that's selected to be router id doesn't even need to run OSPF. How about in
other routing protocols? For example EIGRP and BGP. What role does router-id
play in these protocols? I know that it selects the highest loopback
interface IP as router-id if not manually configured, so if EIGRP is not
running on this chosen loopback interface, does it still work? Thanks!

Also, which protocols actually have a "router id" field in its hello packet?
I know OSPF does but I can't find information about EIGRP.

thanks a lot!

Can token ring carry multicast traffic? And what's the ip address to mac
address mapping if it does?
Thanks!

a default route question.. [7:72211]

2003-07-13 Thread wj chou
Hi,
I am sure a lot of you here have read Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP VolumeI. I
am reading Charpter 12 "Default routes and on-demand routing" and have a
question on page 753, it says that "After a default route is identified in
the routing table, RIP, EIGRP, IGRP will automatically advertise it". And it
gives an example of RIP automatically advertise defualt route without doing
any redistribution. this I can't agree. I tried it on my setup but it
doesn't work. Without redistribution, my default route just doesn't get
advertised to its RIP neighbors. Am I misunderstanding anything? Can someone
who has read this book help? thanks a lot!

Re: an ISIS question.... [7:72081]

2003-07-10 Thread wj chou
"In this case, you L1 areas will not usually be the same and the L1
adjacency between the two "core" routers will not form. If the area is the
same, the L2 adjacency is superfluous. Many large networks are single
area, or single level (ie L1 everyone in one area, or L2 everywhere where
area isn't very relevant.)"

Can you explain a bit more about this? "you L1 areas will not usually be the
same an the L1 adjacency between the two "core" routers will not form"? I am
new to ISIS...

Thanks!

an ISIS question.... [7:72081]

2003-07-09 Thread wj chou
Hi..

a basic ISIS question...

I know that by default, an IS is L1-L2, so it can form a L1L2 adjacency with
its neighbors. But what's the benefit of it? and under what kind of
situation in real world people want to configure it this way?

thanks!

OSI routing in CCIE R&S exam? [7:71960]

2003-07-06 Thread wj chou
Hi,

I am preparing for the R & S written exam and wondering do we have to master
in everything mentioned in the blueprint? I find myself hard to decide how
deep I should dip into some of the subjects. For example, "OSI model" is
listed in the blue print but do I have to know CNLP, CONP those stuff? Also
how much do we need to know about IPX?

thanks!

Rooban, have you found the free sample CCIE written exam questions? If so, I
am interested in that too. Thanks!

Also, if you go to http://www.boson.com/products/66717.htm?ID=1084 the #3 is
said to be a good sample exam. I haven't tried it yet but you can download a
couple of questions for free.
