3550 EMI [7:52430]
A new IOS has just been released for the 3550 - 12.1.11.EA1. Looks like it came just in time for the new lab format too. Will this have BGP? What else will this have? The documentation has not been posted yet. Just in time to practice for the weekend anyhow. In any event it looks like the lab will be moving from 6 to 8 full routers come Nov. -Eric Message Posted at: http://www.groupstudy.com/form/read.php?f=7&i=52430&t=52430 -- FAQ, list archives, and subscription info: http://www.groupstudy.com/list/cisco.html Report misconduct and Nondisclosure violations to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: 3550 EMI [7:52430]
The only thing I know of right now about this release is that it fixes a Spanning tree bug. Re: 3550 EMI [7:52430]
I hate to quote other's without permission but here are some comments from Mr. Chuck L. on what he found out previously. Begin Quote: "The Cisco Account Team that supports my employer gave a pretty good engineering oriented presentation to us today. Here are some of the CCIE Lab related points made: 1) for the 3550 switch, BGP will appear in the next IOS release, due out in August. Cisco did not say so, but I am guessing that this will be plenty of time for a Lab scenario to be put together and tested where BGP on the 3550 L3 switch will be part of the scenario. Recall that Lab takers will be accountable for all L3 possibilities on the 3550 switch after November 4, 2002. 2) the BGP implementation on the 3550 L3 will not be "complete" The presenter was unable to speak to specifics, but I have a question in to Cisco, and the Account team has promised an answer detailing the differences between the switch BGP and a router BGP. 3) I asked specifically and was told specifically that IS-IS is not planned on either the 3550 or the 4006 L3. I was a bit surprised to hear this because of the recent resurgence in the popularity of IS-IS. 4) Not that it matters, but there are no plans for L3 IPX either. I certainly can find no reference to IPX in the command references and config guides for the 3550 switches as found on CCO. I am still hunting down a definitive word about the number of 3550's that will be in each Lab pod. Some folks have told me there will be two, with all that implies. However, those at Cisco whom I have asked have not said anything so far." End Quote Apologies in advance to Mr. CL should it be needed. ;-) I'll be loading this baby up in the morning when I fire up the rack. Just doing a little light reading on the 3550 EMI, about 10 pounds worth of light reading! That's what I figure the weight of the 3550 command guide and config guide combined is. For those out there who are extensive note takers, use highlighters and are scribblers (like me) you might want to get these books from Cisco. If you've got yourself covered with a smartnet you can probably get them for free. Just tried it out: Switch(config)#router bgp 1 Switch(config-router)# Yep, this version has BGP, doesn't have IS-IS yet. Make sure you can enter some commands under the BGP process. Just defining the process in the config doesn't mean the IOS supports it. -Original Message- From: Dan Penn [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, August 31, 2002 1:56 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: 3550 EMI [7:52430] Just tried it out: Switch(config)#router bgp 1 Switch(config-router)# Yep, this version has BGP, doesn't have IS-IS yet. Re: 3550 EMI [7:52430]
Having spend some time delving into the 3550 recently, I think I would be careful about getting sucked in by the mystique of L3 switching, and pay at least as much attention to a lot of the advanced L2 functionality. Things like VLAN tunneling, RSTP, etherchannel, fallback bridging all are fairly easy to configure once you understand the tricks, and all of them offer lots of possibilities to the devious minds to write CCIE Lab scenarios. The introduction of the 3550's to the CCIE Lab means it is now possible to do end to end QoS. If Brad Ellis is correct about the IOS version in the Lab, that means the 26xx's that are there are fully capable of ALL the nasty QoS things I've been reading about. I sure know the switch is ready. And never forget - Cisco says DLSw will still be tested. I've already thought of at least one way they can use the switch to screw you. -- TANSTAAFL "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch" ""Eric Rogers"" wrote in message [EMAIL PROTECTED]">news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... > A new IOS has just been released for the 3550 - 12.1.11.EA1. IS-IS is one of those. Access-lists in the 700 range are another. CL: The docs contain a section called "unsupported commands" which should be read thoroughly. > -Original Message- > From: Dan Penn [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Saturday, August 31, 2002 1:56 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RE: 3550 EMI [7:52430] > > > Just tried it out: > > Switch(config)#router bgp 1 > Switch(config-router)# > > Yep, this version has BGP, doesn't have IS-IS yet. > > Dan > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of > Eric Rogers > Sent: Saturday, August 31, 2002 12:13 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: 3550 EMI [7:52430] > > A new IOS has just been released for the 3550 - 12.1.11.EA1. True, however that's farther than 12.1.9 went. I'll test it out further later when I have time.
