I have that book and wasn't very impressed with it. And the CD-ROM questions
are a rehash of the printed questions.
I know it is too late for us too read a review but this may help someone
else.
I would only recommend it as an exam cram type book to speed read right
before the test. I would not recommend it as a primary study source.
I think that if you only use this book you are in for a suprise when you
take the test.

Re: Another New CCIE Book

2000-08-04 Thread Kevin Wigle

I bought the book mostly out of curiosity because of the June 2000 date on
it.

After flipping through it last night my first impressions aren't very
positive.

Which I probably should have expected as compared to other books, it's kinda
thin - physically. Not the tomes other CCIE books have been.

Not that size matters (yeah, right) but there is so much material required
for CCIE.

Also, I tried a few of the questions and it didn't take long for me find
ones I wasn't happy with vis a vis agreeing with their answers - but this
only gets you to dive into some other resource to verify that you are
right - a learning process either way.

On sober second thought I would wait on buying this one until a few members
of the list who are book nuts can review it more in depth.

I'm sure that these 'people' can do web searches just fine!!!
The fact of the matter is, this list is comprised of people from the same
field, with like goals! Asking for recommendations on books that others
have
already read is an excellent way to decide what material 'people' are going
to use
to study for the tests!!! If 10 people come back and say a book suckes, it
probably
did!!! This type of information is one of the most useful parts of a
mailing list!

RE: Another New CCIE Book

2000-08-04 Thread McCallum, Robert

Although there maybe a new book out at the most it will only give people a
chance to pass the written exam (BIG DEAL). As the last posts have
stated this will only make the lab exam more frightening as the fail rate
will shoot up incredibly. IF people reckon they can read this book, pass
the written then toddle along to the lab with enough ammo to pass then we
are all in for a right laugh!

Re: Another New CCIE Book

2000-08-03 Thread Oz

Sometimes you have to move the mountain to moses. The cost of real routers
is not really that much money. The initial cost versus the experience
gained is so high % wise that it's foolish to do any other way (just
about).
I was on an interview today and the dude said and he was kidding I bet
you have a few routers at home ?
And I told him yes about 20 odd ..
Then I told him why I had 20 and he said that I was one of a very few who
he had interviewed that had labs at home..
then he said about VOIP and much to his surprise I told him I had a couple
of VOIP boxes but just have not has the time to play with them ..

I don't really need this job but I am just keeping my options open in case
something else does not pan out.
But every job I have even from the help desk days it was my playing with
the toys that got me jobs more so than letters and passing exams.
Because thats how newbies get the experience by buying the toys and playing
with them SEEING how it works and or does not work ..
FOR ME that helps me understand it all .
like right now playing with Checkpoint and it's cool I can create a real
complicated access list debug it then export in to a router cool huh.
Kinda make the Cisco was a little arcane but it has helped me understand
access lists a heap more.
Which mean I just learn that I know very little sigh

Maybe the Lab as I strongly suspect and the contributors here have rightly
indicated is the make/break but the simple question is where the devil is
Cisco going to find the Networkers to do the job? Where is the hands on
going to come and who is going to let a newbie anywhere near an operational
router?

Title: RE: Another New CCIE Book

I will read any book that affords me an insight to
CCIE and its siblings.  Since I have no exact yardstick to what exactly is
on the ball or not I cannot afford to turn the book down.

I have the book and I'm using it to go out and find
the material I have to read for the written exam.  I'm not using it to do
the exam and it should not be used that way as far as I can see!

Maybe the Lab as I strongly suspect and the
contributors here have rightly indicated is the make/break but the simple
question is where the devil is Cisco going to find the Networkers to do the
job?  Where is the hands on going to come and who is going to let a newbie
anywhere near an operational router?

This is rather like theoretical flying lessons and
the actual deed.  It takes 35 to 40 hours to go solo.  So how long for
a new CCNA, a lone router, and do you want to be passenger?

As for the CCNA for Dummies having got hold of the
book I think if you know it from cover to cover you will pass.  You might
not know what your talking about but you will pass.
