Make sure you select the following settings in HyperTerminal:

Bits Per Second:9600
Date Bits:  8
Parity: None
Stop Bits:  2
Flow Control:   None

In case the previous two postings won't correct your problem, try the cable.
I had a very similar problem. I couldn't get in for nothing. I saw
everything scroll but couldn't do anything. Although, I was able to
Ctrl-break during boot process to get to the prompt. Then nothing again. In
my case it was the cable. Once switched, I was able to resume. If not, you
can try changing the DB-connector. Since you mentioned your laptop, there is
a possibility the cable and/or the connector were slightly damaged from
connecting and disconnecting.
