RE: Interview questions

2000-09-21 Thread dacarl4

Yeah CDP is Cisco proprietary, but as you all know it runs on "most" Cisco
products, not just Catalysts. I say most because there are certain devices
that are stamped Cisco, but were developed by other companies and don't
support CDP.

If I remember the original question, the interviewer asked specifically
about Catalysts. Bottom line was that the question was not worded very
well.

Re: Interview questions

2000-09-20 Thread Frank Jimenez

1.) Reserved PVCs.
To be picky, PVCs aren't reserved, but certain DLCIs are.

Frame Relay reserved DLCIs would be: 0 and 1023 for management, 1-15 for future use,
1008-1022 for future use (e.g. multicast).
I seem to remember reading somewhere that DLCI 992-1007 are reserved for something as
well, but I can't find the reference.

2.) Prioprietary Protocol on Cat5K.

Not sure, but he might have been asking about EtherChannel?

3.) Four major configs on a DSU/CSU?

Not sure again, but I'd guess: linecode, framing, clocking, timeslots

Good luck!

 Subject: Interview questions

Here are some question I had on a interview that I didnt know at least at
 the moment:

What are the reserved PVC's and what are they reserved for?

I'm not sure about this one. If he's asking what are reserved virtual
circuits, I'd say the PVCs are, as opposed to SVCs. On the other hand, if
he's asking what DLCIs are reserved, I've seen two slightly different lists,
depending on the book you reference, but they are mostly similar. The one
I'm currently looking in shows reserved DLCIs:

0 - LMI signaling
1-15 - Reserved (doesn't say what for)
16-991 Available (non-reserved)
992-1007 - Optional management information (rarely used)
1008-1022 - Reserved (doesn't say what for)
1023 - Other management function

I believe that where the function is simply "Reserved," it depends upon the
carrier's implementation of Frame Relay and/or the brand of switch used. In
other words, "it depends."

What is the proprietary protocol on the Catalyst's?

The only thing I can think of here is Cisco's proprietary ISL trunking
protocol.

What are the four major configurations on a CSU/DSU?

Pretty sure about this one: Number of channels (speed), Line Coding (B8ZS,
AMI), Frame Type (ESF, D4), and Clock Source (internal, line).

Not really crazy about the wording of the first two questions, frankly. I
usually try to play to their egos if I know I don't know the answer to see
if they'll offer it. At worst, I still won't know the answers after the
interview; at best, I'll have the answers for next time.

Hope this helps,

- Don

I would have to agree with David. After initially reading the question I
also thought ISL. However, even though ISL is a proprietary Cisco protocol
it isn't limited to just Cat's, and I think that is what the person asking
the question was looking for. I do however think that it is a poorly worded
question since ISL is described as "A Cisco protocol for interconnecting
multiple switches and maintaining VLAN information as traffic goes between
switches." You could have argued the point either way. Just my .02 cents.

Here are some question I had on a interview that I didnt know at least
at
  the moment:

What are the reserved PVC's and what are they reserved for?

What is the proprietary protocol on the Catalyst's?

What are the four major configurations on a CSU/DSU?

  Thanks
